Parenthood Reviews

Such a damn good movie

Like every other movie he’s in, Steve Martin steals the show in this one. Parenthood is funny, touching, and gives you something to think about. This is one of my favorite movies I’ve watched this year

Critic's consensus is right on. There are no perfect movies, but this one comes damned close. Deeply engaging, riddled with good humor, Howard has created something of real value. Exaggeration is necessary in support of the comedy and drama.

Genuinely laugh out loud comedy, great acting, nobody's life is perfect, a slice of real life and taking the bad with the good. Life is rollercoaster.

Wonderful movie with a great cast and stories that had me super interested and many were relatable. Shows the real side of what a real family goes through and I really enjoyed it!

At first I thought as a comedy, it's wasn't as good as I had hoped. It is an entertaining film, which starts off well, but towards the end it gets more reflective and it started to loose it's appeal for me. In a way, the film is mirroring the real life parenting experience where children grow up and loose their charm, and this might be what the director had intended. However, I decided to give it another watch and pay more attention at the end, and I liked the film better for what it is second time around.

I am a parent, and I enjoy parenthood much more than Parenthood seems to. Yes, every family has its struggles, but this family seems to have all the struggles, and it focuses on the negatives of parenting so much that any positives it shows don't balance out. The direction also feels amateurish, which is odd, because Ron Howard had directed Splash, Cocoon, and Willow by this point. The humor isn't quite up to par, either. Steve Martin seems very restrained in his performance and Rick Moranis' comedic talents are almost completely wasted. I think the screenplay of this family drama needed more time to mature.

Parenthood is like a roller coaster. It's a ride with highs & lows, and moments of fright, nausea, excitement, and thrills. Ron Howard directs a hilarious comedy-drama with a winning ensemble. It's a movie that shows you that you can either go on the boring merry-go-round that just goes around. Or you can get on the roller coaster and have a blast.

Family movie that has got heart and makes me want to be Gil Buckman.

One of the best comedies of 1989. This clever, multi-layered film's greatest strength is taking the often mundane and turning them into hilarious moments

Always thought it was strange that Joaquin Phoenix had a relatively normal first name when his siblings were River, Rain, Liberty, and Summer. Then you see in Parenthood that as a child actor he was apparently credited as 'Leaf Phoenix', so that answers that question. At first glance, Parenthood seems to be your standard family comedy - frustrated parents, lonely single mothers, kids saying just the darndest things - but it handles some surprisingly serious material, both from the perspective of the parents (Steve Martin fretting over how good of a parent he is, for the sake of his children) right down to the kids themselves (Phoenix takes a surprisingly dark turn as a boy that is essentially abandoned by his father and has to come to terms with it). Kind of iffy as a comedy, but sweet-natured, reaffirming and pretty ambitious as a family drama with lighthearted elements, the biggest weakness of Parenthood is just how wide-ranging it tries to be, with its many subplots that it attempts to juggle and the wide-ranging tone. Still, it's a wholesome movie about bad moments that draw people together. One thing that I don't see very many people mentioning that has aged rather poorly? This film makes a very elaborate gag out of the 1966 Texas Tower shooting, using it as a goofy 'bad ending' to Martin not teaching his kid baseball well. They even go so far as to replicate poses from famous images of the event. C'mon dude, don't make light of and exploit a tragedy like that. (3/5)

I really like the way that "Gil Buckman" always support her son, and doing anything for her to make him happy

The movie is a classic and should be required viewing for anyone having a child.

Fun-relatable movie I've been watching since I was a kid. As life changes I relate with different characters in this film.

A movie that really should only appeal to parents, its comical but not funny, . martin has 30 films better than this one

This is one movie I can't get into no matter how hard I try. I have never found it funny in the slightest and that's a shame because it has a great cast.
