Paris, je t'aime Reviews

Apr 18, 2025

I like the mime's "Tour Eiffel" the most. Humorous, free and passionate. The tourist one played by Buchemi is a good satire, too. The Christopher Doyle's Chinese one is disturbing.

These type projects are invariably a mixed bag; of ways to approach the short form by the directors; genres (though very little variance here); but mostly in quality. My favorites are the wacky vampire short, with Olga Kurylenko and Elijah Wood, and Juliette Binochet as the grieving mother who receives surcease of suffering from a cowboy on a horse tromping les rues de Paris. The first and last vignettes were both very good as well. The weakest for me, were the Steve Buscemi one and one where a man is senselessly murdered a some worthless street urchin. Nice work overall, for a mixed bag. 3.2 stars

A love letter to the city of Paris, Paris, Je T'Aime consists of eighteen short films, each by a different director and starring different actors, that cover a variety of iterations of love and longing. The varying styles of the directors (which includes the likes of Olivier Assayas, Gus Van Sant, the Coens, Alfonso Cuaron and Tom Tykwer, among others) gives each segment a fresh and unique feel. The cast (including Juliette Binoche, Natalie Portman, Gena Rowlands, Gerard Depardieu, etc.) does a remarkable job considering the time constraints of the short films and the stories, the quality of which varies from segment to segment, are generally top notch. Of note, the continuous take is Cuaron's Parc Monceau is remarkable and Alexander Payne's 14E Arrondissement is unexpectedly heartbreaking.

There are a few islands of entertaining arthouse cinema here, but they're surrounded by an ocean of pointless and boring vignettes. If you can stream it for free, the following episodes are worth watching: "Tuileries," the Coen Brothers' hilarious satire of tourist paranoia; the charming "Tour Eiffel," about a mime who finds love; "Quartier Latin," a thoughtful look at amicable divorce; and the clever "Parc Monceau" and "Faubourg Saint-Denis," about which little can be said without spoiling them.

Now that's a movie with true depth it!

A collection of vignettes at different sites in Paris around the theme of love. I found this film interesting, quirky and engaging. Though some stories were better than others. At 2 hours it was overly long. They could have cut some out and expanded the good ones.

She's pretty, really pretty. It might be a meant to be sort of thing. That was pretty smooth the way he lied her down in his car. Wow, that Arabic girl is really pretty! When Ethan Joel Coen's name popped up, I knew it was going to be one the best ones. And it was! Steve Buschemi and the whole predicament he was in in the subway was so fucking hilarious. He didn't even have to say one word. That Christopher Doyle one was so fucking random and disorienting the way it jumped around but interesting as fuck. That one short with Juliette Binoche was hard hitting. The way she heard her son's voice outside in the stairwell's and then went on the street trying to find him. That's grieving to a whole another level. Almost haunting. Dude and then that twist when Willem Dafoe shows up as a cowboy! Wtf?! Ahhhh! That one by Sylvain Chomet, same guy who did Triplets and Illusionist, was so fucking weird but so funny at the same time. That one with the black guy and black girl was so heartbreaking, that hit hard. She basically could have saved his life if he'd been quicker at asking her out the day he was working in the parking garage. After that, he lost his job and place to live, and everything went down hill. The way she trembled as she held the two cups of coffee. The one with Natalie Portman and the blind dude was really good. The way the director shot the montage of their relationship in a fast time-lapse was mesmerizing to watch. The Alexander Payne one was so fucking hilarious. The line delivery of the big American lady reading in French had me laughing so hard. Her pronunciation of some French words were very choppy which is what made it so funny to listen to. But at the same time the message at the end was quite beautiful. I love how these little vignettes about love weave in and out of one another. You almost think that all these were happening on the same day or night. It was great seeing all the actors that I've seen in other movies in these shorts. I love how they interconnected the characters from each distinct story into one at the end. This is such a great love letter to Paris. They make it seem like it's an enchanted place where beautiful things can happen, both good or bad. Watching this kind of makes me want to visit Paris pretty bad now. I'd like revisit some of these shorts again sometime.

Given the diversity of the stories in Paris, Je Taime, it's hard to give five stars. However I won't hesitate to give it four stars, since I really liked this movie. Such a refreshing and unique film. Definitely something here for everyone. All of the segments have the theme of love, but surprisingly not all are romantic. This is a film I could watch over and over and always find something new. It's interesting to see the different takes that the directors have on Paris; so diverse and yet so similar in the affection they have for this beautiful city. I wish more films would be made in this fashion. I can think of several other cities that would work, so hopefully someone will pick up on the brilliance of this original movie. Lots of great cast members as well!

Many french stories with some actors (Elijah Wood, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Nick Nolte, Margo Martingale, Steve Buscemi, Willem DaFoe, Natalie Portman, Bob Hoskins, Rufas Sewell) and directors (the Coen brothers, Alfonso Cuaron, Wes Craven, Alexander Payne) you may know putting in what I think is the best work in an otherwise uneven anthology (aren't they all?) 7.5/10

I didn't think it was any better than a million other films just like it.

The movie is a little uneven at times, but overall is a really good anthology film from an array of talented filmmakers and cast. I liked the depiction of love in all forms and range of emotions throughout the film. Even though some parts were not as great as others, the segments are each pretty short and don't drag down the movie as a whole.

"Paris Je T´Aime" is a 2006 anthology film starring an ensemble cast of actors of various nationalities. The two-hour film consists of eighteen short films set in different arrondissements. The 22 directors include Gurinder Chadha, Sylvain Chomet, Joel and Ethan Coen, Gérard Depardieu, Wes Craven, Alfonso Cuarón, Nobuhiro Suwa, Alexander Payne, Tom Tykwer, Walter Salles, Yolande Moreau, and Gus Van Sant. "Paris Je T´Aime" received generally positive reviews. Rotten Tomatoes consensus states: "Paris je t'aime is uneven, but there are more than enough delightful moments in this omnibus tribute to the City of Lights to tip the scale in its favor." I agree, this is an uneven love homage to beautiful Paris. Many of the stories are not that exciting and too short to my mind and the casting is not that balanced as well. The focus in each story is of course love in different ways. The idea is there with the cinematography. But, I think this project needed less directors and more time for each director to make an impact. Everytime a story ended in the film you felt "That´s it?". My biggest treat was to see the lovely Leïla Bekhti.

The four stars are for the whole movie, but the last half star belongs entirely to Margo Martindale.

One of my favorite films ever.

A few rough spots, but the overall movie is great. In particular, let me give a hand to Olga Kurylenko, doing an incredibly beautiful rendition of one incredibly beautiful vampire. Many other excellent actors, by somehow, I was taken in more by Ms. Kurylenko than anyone else. What an actress. She is obviously intelligent, and the absolute beauty she represents with one glance at her, whew, I'm sure the hearts of most of the men out there race just to see her.

"Paris Je T'aime" is an anthology in which short tapes are collected regarding and connecting to the city of Paris, and what we can find in it to later define why this city is what it is, which elements compose it, as well as a wide panorama of how people live there, what problems exist, but we are also endowed with joyful anecdotes that their inhabitants and visitors acquire, being by definition a film that conveys the dream and the reality of living in the French capital . As mentioned, this film collects short films from different authors and perspectives, which makes it as a whole to be appreciated on its wide range of possibilities. For obvious reasons, there are short films of better quality than others, but what matters is the whole, which can sometimes be taken as too long and cheesy, but where you can enter the streets and the minds of the characters to believe a delightful and enjoyable cinematographic work.
