Paterson Reviews

A poem of a movie. Simple and perfect. Adam Driver is amazing.

Like the bus he drives, this film moves slow and ultimately goes nowhere.

Good casting but horrible poetry and about as much fun as watching my hair grow. No plot. Movies are suppose to entertain. I could tape my own personal life and it would be more interesting. Cupcakes ??? Yikes !

This is literally the worst movie I have ever seen. Golshifteh Farahani's beauty is the only value this movie has. BORING!

Sometimes I like to watch films in which not much happens, when they're about the appreciable little things in life and the slight changes in daily routines, especially when they are delivered in such friendly warm colours like in Paterson.

One of my favourite films, always special even on a rewatch. Truly altered my brain chemicals

Jarmusch is the master of these low key, plotless character studies. Driver's performance is easily a career best from him.

I am honestly shocked at the semi decent audience rating for this movie. One of the slowest, dumbest, most meaningless pieces of **** I have ever been forced to watch. I can only assume the people that gave it good ratings already went in knowing they weren't watching a movie, but a piece of "performance art". Even at that, I've seen better.

A pleasure of a film. Be taken into the moment of these characters lives- be part of their peace and their sweet love.

Wow, what a borefest. When you're hoping the bulldog does something interesting, you know you're in for not a good time.

This movie is so magnificently rich with themes I would not know where to start. If this movie is boring to you, you have missed at least one of its main themes: The intimacy and beauty in the details of life all are around. Jarusch suggests a new look. Yes, it is an artsy look but but as opposed to there being devils in the details, there is beauty and joy in the simplistic details of life. These people are rich with with discovery in the simplicity of their surroundings and Jarusch suggests- so are you. It can be described in one word: lovely. Do you know someone who achieves joy in cupcakes and learning the guitar and makes curtains and obscure Persian paintings? Do you know anyone who drives a freakin bus everyday on the same route and peers at life at a deeper level than the height, width, depth in a box and ponders time, the first, the second, third, fourth and on, dimensions that could exist? This is a calling, a yearning to look deeper. I stopped counting all the other themes. Nice job Jarusch. Very very nice job.

Jarmusch tries to make a movie about the beauty of the everyday but all we get is boring and mundane.

It was wonderful to see an interesting story. Actually, not really a story, but a view into a person's everyday life. A person probably considered normal with a basic job, home, acquaintances and events. A view that shows the contentment that can be with the help of the arts, be it poetry or baking.

You ever read a synopsis, and break into tears? This movie does that.

I thought and I thought, where is this going. Then, I realised that round and around was good. The

This is very much an arty film - its like a love letter to poetry and its also very much centered on mundanity, on the local area of the titular character, Paterson, the issues found at his workplace and how certain events can have an effect on them. I won't say a great deal, plot wise, as I'm not sure quite what I could say that would entirely make it make sense, frankly - its certainly a quirky film. I liked the moments where Patersons partner, Laura (played well by Golshifteh Farahani) is shown being creative at home, getting satisfaction from perhaps seemingly basic household tasks. I liked the dog, Marvin - he's a cute English Bulldog who features in a few scenes. I wouldn't say this is a great film - I liked it in one way and in another way it felt a bit too pretentious in a way. I suppose its typical Jim Jarmusch fare really. Oh and also, I did like that when Paterson gives voice over/narrative reading out the various poems he has in his mind, said lines appear on screen - some are more thoughtful, perhaps, than others. Its a relatively interesting film, a little bland/quirky perhaps in a not brilliant way but in another way its fairly good, so I'm giving it a 7 out of 10 rating, for the more poignant and touching lines of poetry. There aren't too many films that feature a main character keen on expressing him through poetry and keeping it to himself for the most part and I myself do (or certainly did) write poetry every now and then, so I could somewhat relate to that aspect. If it sounds of interest, then its probably worth a watch, especially for fans of Adam Driver, who plays the main (titular) character but it is also a bit of an acquired taste perhaps - certainly if your looking for a big laugh type comedy or an exciting watch, then this may well disappoint. I leave it to you to decide if this is for you or not.

Poetic, alluring, relatable & romantic. Adam Driver does a fantastic job in this offbeat film.

A movie that basically just follows Adam Driver around as he drives a bus and narrates aloud drafts of his poems? I should have hated this, but surprisingly I liked a lot of it. I can’t quite explain why. Maybe there’s something to be learned from the quiet, understated way that Paterson consistently took the ups and downs of his life.

No reason to like the character. Every reason to hate his relationship. Nothing happens. The end.
