Pawn Sacrifice Reviews
"Pawn Sacrifice" is interesting enough but it left me curious to learn more about the people it portrays. I think Tobey Maguire is excellent in this and his performance largely carries the movie. I feel the pacing is pretty slow and it starts to drag a bit before the big chess showdown at the end. I actually wish the movie showed glimpses of more chess matches and think it could have been a better use of its runtime. Nonetheless, this is a fascinating movie that studies the fine line between crazy and genius and I thought it was an engaging enough watch, primarily because of Maguire's great lead performance.
Bobby Fischer's story is an interesting one and this portrayal is well done by Tobey.
Tobey Maguire proves once again why he’s one of the best/ most iconic actors of all time!
IF YOU PLAY CHESS THIS IS A MUST SEE.
Chess players might not like the movie because there are some obvious inaccuracies about the game, but as a profile of Bobby Fischer the films holds up as an effective portrait of a mentally disturbed chess genius.
Maguire is quite good and I like how the screenplay refuses to idolize Fischer or waste time explaining chess.
I learned to play chess after seeing this film, which I subsequently rewatched twice (not counting those good old "rewind that sequence!" moments). The non-verbal acting between Maguire (Bobby Fischer) and Schreiber (Boris Spassky) is amazing. True story of the height-of-the-cold-war 1971 World Chess Championship held in Reykjavík, Iceland. Sit back and watch boy genious Bobby Fischer lose... his... mind!
Pawn Sacrifice is a terrific film. It is about American chess prodigy Bobby Fischer who finds himself caught between two superpowers. Tobey Maguire and Liev Schreiber give fantastic performances. The script is good but a little slow at times. Edward Zwick did a great job directing this movie. I enjoyed watching this motion picture because of the drama and history. Pawn Sacrifice is a must see.
Well I will never look at Chess the same way again.... an absolute classic to the mindset of the importance of chess to chess players.
This is an interesting character driven biopic, based on real events. Of course its mainly about chess but it's also about getting an idea of the main character's mindset. It's pretty clear from early on that he has some personal issues and paranoia is an obvious factor at play. It's frustrating watching someone with a clear talent take the decisions and do what he does. I did feel somewhat sorry for him, which is perhaps surprising given his attitude but I understand that people don't necessarily realise that what they believe to be true, isn't necessarily so. I thought Tobey Maguire was a good choice of actor to play the main character, Bobby Fischer. I also thought there was some good cinematography. There are subtitles on screen at times, due to the Russian language being spoken, with Russian media shown reporting on what was happening at the time.
What an incredible story. This could have been amazing. But it wasn't.
An almost eerie biopic weighted by strong turns from it's cast. Some beautifully shot scenes of the major chess matches.
It's easily detectable that production and direction aren't bad at all. I wouldn't affirm everything is perfect, but i got so satisfied with the internal work done here. Tobey Maguire is one of the strongest points of the movie, and his story when he was kid is also very well told. In therms of entertainment, the movie is very fun and watchable. But if we talked about the story stuff, it is inevitable not to see the lack of depth put on many of the situations and subjects. It feels like the movie tried to tell you just what you need to understand the plot, but not what the movie needs to be more than just decent. It feels actually like such a conformist film. 3/5 fits perfect for me. More than regular, but doesn't get as far as it could have.
This movie does a great job at telling the story of legendary chess master Bobby Fischer, which Toby nailed portraying Fischer, and I can't really find that many flaws in the movie really, I love chess and like I said, it tells the great true story of a master chess genius.
The Movie does a great job at showing the real life events. Its a great drama about a genius chess player who wants to be at the top, and the actor Tobey Maguire does an amazing job playing Bobby Fischer. His acting skills are great. Its a more mindful film and it explains his life perfectly. The film managed the Characters work perfectly and its overall very interessting to watch. Probably one my most favourite movies. If you like chess, drama and mindful movies, this one is right for you!
Was not expecting this film to be so grounded in reality. The film does a great job of making the viewer feel like they're watching events play out in the twentieth century. I particularly enjoyed how the film would occasionally switch to "black-and-white" whenever a historical event was taking place. The tension, drama, and vigorous thinking that goes into playing chess was expertly conveyed here. I never knew that a movie about chess could be so intense. Tobey Maguire's acting here was a highlight of this film, he really knows how to get into his character, and just like what happened when I watched "The Details" and "Brothers," I completely forgot that he ever played Peter Parker. I just got that invested in his portrayal of Bobby Fischer. The score here is fantastic too for what wasn't that much of a blockbuster hit (unfortunately). My few gripes with this film were that I did not particularly like the subplot concerning Fischer and his sister. Additionally, they did not explore Fischer's life AFTER becoming world champion which was when his life became incredibly controversial. Seeing it not having been portrayed on the big screen was an incredible disappointment as all we got in return was a few lines of text summarizing what occurred. All in all, this was an excellent film that achieved what it set out to do; which was exploring the eccentric persona of the genius Bobby Fischer on his way to becoming the youngest ever Chess World Champion.
I didn't know a thing about Bobby before watching this. What a great film - who knew Chess could be so interesting? highly recommended.
