The Perfect Storm Reviews
Based on a true story and it could have been entertaining but instead it lacks depth in the characters especially Mark Wahlberg who once again sleepwalks through his role.
The visual effects were probably the best part of the movie. You really feel like you are also trapped in that ocean during this storm. The initial setting up, albeit being cheesy worked really well and forms the emotional core of the movie. All the relationships really worked for me and that really carried the whole movie emotionally. Because considering the changes to the true story, this kind of makes the crew look like morons even when the music tells you otherwise. There are so many stupid decisions shown in the movie that are all fiction. Even with all that, the cast was very charming and all the relationship stuff worked really well to make it really enjoyable.
This was horrific..... Telling if a story that no one knows. This can't be called "based on a true story". There is no real connection with the characters, The end of the film made me feel unfulfilled. It's in the top of my list of worst movies of all time.
It has great VFX, music score, and emotional depth.
This film, based on the true story and novel of the same name, follows Billy Tyne, the captain of the swordfishing boat Andrea Gail, and his crew. After a disappointing fishing trip and a streak of bad luck, they decide to leave their families behind once more and return to the open sea in search of a better haul. However, when a confluence of powerful weather fronts and a hurricane creates the "perfect storm," the crew must battle the raging seas to make it back home—an ordeal that will be anything but smooth sailing. Overall, due to an evocative score, immersive visual effects, a stellar cast with undeniable chemistry that exudes brotherhood and camaraderie every time they are on screen, and a tense, emotional atmosphere, this movie is quite good, and although I'm not particularly interested in or knowledgeable about fishing, and too much time is spent on side characters who are experiencing the storm rather than focusing on our leads, I still very much enjoyed my time with this disaster feature and It serves as a fitting tribute to the lives lost that day and the families they left behind.
Con buenos efectos visuales, actores de primera, trama sencilla pero entretenida sobre valientes hombres y el peligro de sus decisiones y profesiones, motivados por salvar sus vidas y la de los demás.
This is a compelling human story. The phrase "The perfect storm" has become something people say all the time. The film has a few flaws, but it totally entertaining, gripping, and real. A true story that seems impossible.
Perfectly cast and brilliantly acted.
The (over)acting is awful!!! Every part of this movie made me cringe!
I watch a ton of movies and I have watched The Perfect Storm at least 8 times. To hell with "the critics"--the movie was suspenseful, realistic, very well-acted, and gripping. The book by Sebastian Unger brought us the details of how dangerous off-shore fishing can be, the terror that weather can bring in all it's force, the challenges of swordfishing, and the hard lives of fishermen and those who love them. Those critics that criticized the dialogue obviously don't know much about how these fisherman talk...when they say lines like "I always get the fish"--that is what Billy Tyne would say. Wolfgang Peterson did a far better job than some people gave him credit for. He brought this tragic true story of an incredible "perfect storm" home! "The Perfect Storm" was pretty much perfect--and I have read the book several times. This film wasn't a documentary so creative license had to be taken, otherwise you'd be watching mainly a detailed film about fishing boats and equipment, and learning all about extreme weather and the sea (which is certainly an eye-opening education in and of itself). But filmgoers usually want more of a human story, and they want some background on the people this happened to, and then to see what these swordfishermen were up against and how it probably played out. So...Voila!
I have found it very moving. The great courage needed by these fisherman with a very sad ending.
Probably one of my favourite movies great re-watchabilty great cast.
This has to be Clooneys worst movie - Batman is genius compared to this stinker. The dialogue was so corny & ridiculous that we were laughing out loud in the theater. Even Diane Lane's character was poorly written. Worst line (although there were several): I have to find the fish! Ugh!
Solid disaster film that while well-acted and directed, doesn't quite deliver what the book did. The cast is excellent across the board, with George Clooney giving one of his best lead performances while surrounded by a splendid supporting cast. Behind the camera, director Wolfgang Peterson delivers some superb action sequences, matched by some brilliant visual effects. Unfortunately, the story is a bit a downer, mainly since the book worked better explaining the impact of the storm. A solid viewing but not much else.
George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg were good. I like that this movie honors those who were lost at sea. The acting was decent. The movie plodded along until the ending. I think the script could been better. Some of the characterizations of people seemed to be New England stereotypes. The visual affects were good.
This is one of my top 10 movies. The type of movie I can rewatch over and over. The acting, the storyline, the special affects, the music. It all comes together. Knowing it's a true story tribute really ties it together.
It takes a lot of courage and a lot of skill to take on massive hurricanes like this, and all the actors that were involved in THE PERFECT STORM understood the assignment very well.
Really intense and gripping throughout. And a great story with interesting characters who are determined to get through past nature. It feels like you're in there with the danger and flooding with emotions and fear and no idea what nature will throw at you next. Great special effects add to a visually amazing and intense film.
82%. 9/20/23. 2nd watch. It's nice how they give back stories for all of the people on the boat but the stories are a little cheesy and some of the dialogue isn't great. Fun to see them go from not getting any fish to finally landing a ton but then catching the storm on the way back. Sad ending 3.5 on rewatch scale - always entertaining
Solid movie that keeps you on the edge of your seat!
