Persuasion Reviews
It's not that it wasn't entertaining or that it was unfaithful to the book, but it felt like a silly written parody. Them simplifying the dialogs and scenes made it much more palatable to a newer audience but it also made it look like a cheap version of regency writtings (very much like a digestible choice for US watchers). It would've been great as an original concept for a movie, but as a reinterpretation of Austen's book it just felt too silly, despite their idea being making it more alluring to younger audiences
I wish it was a printout on a paper, so I could crumple it up and throw it away!!! It made think that Madame Web isn’t that bad, after all, Dakota!!
We have so many great British actors working in the US. They've all learned spot-on American accents that reason. They're generally excellent actors. There is no need to import Americans into British productions to portray British people, especially legacy Hollywood showbiz kids who seem to be trying hard at acting because their mom and dad were movie and tv actors. So why, oh WHY did the producers of this turkey give a central role to DAKOTA JOHNSON? Do they think anyone is going to rush to watch this because they're a fan of hers? Won't those fans be disappointed when there aren't any of Dakota Johnson's signature bondage sex scenes in Persuasion? Dakota's shortcomings are only enhanced by surrounding her with prime British actors such as Richard Grant. Henry Golding and Cosmo Jarvis. Please, no.
Loved it! nice and chill romantic movie, great acting and chemistry between Dakota and Cosmo. I recommend it if you are looking for chill afternoon movie with happy ending.
Very disappointed. A true Jane Austen fan I found this disrespectful of her books. It’s strays too far from the spirit of who Anne was. Anne is an intelligent women - she would not retreat, frequently to a bottle of red wine. She comments how she doesn’t want to go to see Mary is this version. Though Mary is tiring, Anne would not openly say anything. She openly says Charles asked to marry her before Mary. Jane Austen’s Anne would never boast about that. Even though she rates Wentworth as a 10. Definitely not anywhere above a five in my books. His costumes were unflattering. All in all the Costumes were disappointing with a few exceptions Mary too often stresses how she doesn’t want to be with her children. Scenes were outed that were just unnecessary like the picnic with Lady Russell Don’t waste your time.
A darned good movie. An Jane Austen adaptation for the masses. In a manner of speaking, a new version of the bible, but a bible nonetheless. Perhaps even better. Dakota Johnson at her usual finest. It's her eyes and lips. How she smiles. Seemingly effortless yet acting at its finest. Good soundtrack to match.
People are mad it’s not your usual Austen adaptation. It’s funny, it’s modern, it’s cute, it’s heart wrenching…. It’ll make you laugh and make you cry. It’s one of my favorite movies. Even if the two have zero chemistry!
I hadn’t realised Austen wrote stories about African society. Nice the cast spoke in English though. Subtitles are tiresome.
Dakota Johnson's accent is all over the place, and her acting skills are lacking. The story is so convoluted you cantt keep up... especially if you are aware of what is truly is about... steer clear of this one
Slick in appearance and Dakota Johnson is always a joy to watch. However portraying interracial relationships in Victorian England as the norm is completely anachronistic. I lost interest.
Atrocious. If you love Austen give it a miss, spare yourself from this travesty.
This movie has become one of my favorite movies to watch. I don’t understand the bad reviews, maybe it might not be your taste but other people may enjoy it.
I had heard so many bad things about this version but I loved it! There's so much to pick apart but the one thing I'll say is that this is the first time I've seen chemistry between the leads.
Ahead of it's time, this is that film which makes fools of its reviewers quickest off the mark. Granted it is a jarring first watch, especially for Austen-genre enthusiasts. Its fourth-wall-breaking, modernised dialogue, and playful actor interpretations are unexpected (an unforgivable quality for Austenites). However, what could be more Austen than direct internal dialogue, sharp-witted social observation, and painful self-awareness? By going against the established rules of Austenhood, it is in some ways more Austen than them all. Dakota Johnson is divine as the hopelessly-herself Anne, playing the physical comedy and wry delivery with such natural subtlety you miss it the first time looking for something more comfortable. Cosmo Jarvis is an utterly believable Wentworth. While equal to Anne's quick wit, he plays the pain of love masked as stoic resentment perfectly. The wider cast are all so entertaining, filling in the character landscape with eccentrics, hopeless romantics, selfish narcissists, their long-suffering relations...all as it should be within the Austen universe. Considering the novel's own faltering journey into broad appreciation, it seems apt that a film adaptation would start out so unfairly underappreciated. Watch it again, I dare you.
I have seen many Jane Austen adaptations of her many book and I have to say that this adaptation is by far the worst I've seen. It felt much too modern with poor acting from Dakota Johnson and her constant fourth-wall breaks. I just feel that she is not well suited for a period piece, but that's just personal opinion. Will definitely be sticking with the older adaptations .
It's horrible what they did to Anne's character. What they did in this 'adaptation' seems like a crime to me.
Really enjoyed this take on Austen, though I agree with Tina Kakadelis, it could have gone further, however it took a leaf out of Bridgerton's book and livened things up a bit! It was colourful and stylish, and Dakota Johmson was excellent. I read Persuasion in first year uni English Lit, freezing in a cold flat in a small room I shared with wet washing on a portable radiator. Since then, I've had daughters, visited Bath often with them, and Dorset on holidays, having a day out at Lyme Regis too! 40 years since I read Persuasion! I liked it.
Love it! Especially the two leads.
I heard this movie was terrible, but I love it. Dakota's performance is charming and heartbreaking at the same time. There is mad chemistry between the leads. I keep watching this movie. After my fourth viewing I felt compelled to come here and share my experience. I tried watching one of the older adaptations and felt like it was dour and boring. Don't believe the hype! This film is wonderful.
