Pet Sematary: Bloodlines Reviews
The atmosphere is thick, the performers show up, and it works as a supplementary text to a staple horror novel. In other words, Pet Sematary: Bloodlines is much better than it has any right to be.

As movies based on or inspired by the worlds and characters depicted in Stephen King's vast bibliography, it's by no means the worst, but it's also nowhere near the best.

While not essential, Bloodlines is an interesting appendix for lovers of the novel... written with some knowledge and curiosity for the backstory of one of the best modern American horror novels. [Full review in Spanish]

I'm not a horror guy, but I felt this was in the Stephen King spirit ... it will resonate with his fans. Paralleling it with the Vietnam War was decent symbolism. What does it say when the Peace Corp guy can't leave? Plus Henry Thomas does a King homage.

I'm sad to say this will become one of the more forgettable entries for 2023 horror.

Despite having a solid cast, great camerawork and an interesting premise, Pet Sematary: Bloodlines is unfortunately just a rehash of information we already knew and brings nothing exciting to the table.

Sometimes, a dormant franchise is better.

Following in the footsteps of Fred Gwynne and John Lithgow is a path Jackson White is not equipped to walk, not that the script for this prequel offers anything but more questions to the motivations in the original story

From gnarly kills to a himbo Jud Crandall, Pet Sematary: Bloodlines is perfect for Halloween viewing.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Oct 11, 2023
A run-of-the-mill horror film, one that desperately latches onto the goodwill of a familiar title but has nothing meaningful to add to its legacy.
| Original Score: 3.0/10 | Oct 9, 2023
Simultaneously overstuffed and completely hollow, the prequel's hot actors and welcome indigenous content can't save it from poor character development, bad editing, and a reliance on cheap jump scares. Give me this story with Manny and Donna as leads.

You take the good with the bad in Bloodlines, which manages to avoid a completely forgettable fate that might have buried this franchise six feet deep.
| Original Score: 6/10 | Oct 7, 2023
This is a movie that both opens and closes with the words, “Sometimes, dead is better.” Anyone unfortunate enough to endure Pet Sematary: Bloodlines will undoubtedly agree.

What director Lindsey Anderson Beer does with this prequel is add much-needed depth to the lore of Ludlow, Maine that elevates the source material.
| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Oct 6, 2023
It struggles to justify its existence thematically, posing questions about the nature of “home” and what it means and why we stay there and why we leave there, without following through on the idea.
| Oct 6, 2023
The intriguing idea is weighted down with bland writing and inconsistent supernatural elements.
| Original Score: 1/4 | Oct 6, 2023
A crisp and efficient reminder of King’s line “Sometimes, dead is better,” and that occasionally, sometimes prequels are too.

Lindsey Anderson Beer is unfortunately no Mike Flanagan. Whereas he is able to get fantastic performances out of his actors, most of the performances in Pet Sematary: Bloodlines are curiously flat.

The only scary thing about the experience is how painfully sluggish it is. There are plenty of characters and some bursts of gore, though it all amounts to what may very well be the worst Stephen King adaptation to date.
| Original Score: D- | Oct 6, 2023
Its lack of imagination would be disappointing even if it was a standalone film, but it feels even moreso given its source material’s fascination with the ways in which tremendous loss can alter one’s psyche forever.
