Philadelphia Reviews
We have forgotten, perhaps too quickly, the dreadful impact of Aids on society. This film helps to remedy that and despite a few inaccuracies does it very well. Strong performances from Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington. Very emotional film.
Boring movie and unnecessarily long. The emotional parts had absolutely no effect on me.
joey did like, but joey sad at ending, but joey also happy sometimes
Philadelphia paints a broad message on acceptance, leaving little room for more nuanced discussion, but still does a solid job in building a stellar arc for Washington.
Very good. I did think I'd enjoy 'Philadelphia' much more though, solely based on who appears on the poster. The performances of Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington are impressive enough, though I'd say they have done greater in other productions. The story they portray here is a sizeable one and it is well told, it certainly makes you feel uncomfortable in parts and saddened in many others. I do feel like the pacing could've been better, a shorter run time perhaps would've helped. Overall, if I'm honest, my interest in this wasn't all that strong throughout, I couldn't shake the feeling of wanting something more from it. I can still acknowledge it's objective quality, of course.
Did no one spot the outstanding clanger in the film? Hanks' character is given that prime law case AND promoted to senior associate up front. The entire court room drama never mentioned the promotion !!!! That in itself would be the most compelling reason to use as proof Andy was the most competent lawyer the firm had. FFS. Who directed this film? In any film watch out for "product placement" - a branded item seen or mentioned in the movie. Like a close up of a "Sharp" microwave oven in a kitchen scene just behind an actor. Perfect white teeth 😁😁😁😁😁 , no. matter what the role is. It's 2024 and makeup departments still can't make teeth look realistic. Close up scenes only make the white teeth more incongruous. Denzel Washington staring into the camera, practically blinding me with the dazzling perfect veneers. People have yellowish teeth generally speaking. Hollywood stars do not apparently. It's like a competition for the whitest teeth.
From opposing discrimination to celebrating life, even 30 years later, Philadelphia still has moments that can touch the hearts of everyone.
Un film très émouvant en partie dû à la performance de Tom Hanks qui est tout simplement parfaite. Il propose une approche très réelle de la situation des malades du SIDA de l'époque et de la discrimination qu'ils subissaient.
The movie was very depressing and melodramatic about AIDS and excellent performances of Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington.
Two moving performances at the center of painful, yet powerful, court room drama.
This is a good film. Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington give strong performances
During the making of this film the producers, really did a lot of research into the was society felt about AIDS , they spoke to the families that were victims, and to the family that this film was based on , the film is an outstanding court room drama, the cast are given enough dialogue to give you the impression that they were all giving their best . Tom Hanks is pitch perfect in his portrayal of the AIDS victim, and Denzel, Washington as his lawyer gives an outstanding performance, the soundtrack is both moving and heartbreaking. I saw this film when it first came out in 1993 and rewatched it tonight, it has not lost a bit of its power , it is as important and valid as the day it was released.
A gentle, tender, intimate account of suffering with AIDS and the stigma, assumptions, fear, and suffering that go with it, all whilst living, working, and navigating relationships. DW and TH are the perfect coupling, and really show the disparate views and feelings in this story with palpable emotions
The pursuit of justice is applied to all, even those who have different sexualities! Lawyer Andrew Beckett is unjustly fired from his law-firm when he begins to show signs of AIDS, resulting in him hiring Joe Miller as his attorney in the legal battle against his old partners, with the illness becoming worse. An emotional and heartbreaking film that resonates with the current social climate for those who are considered different in the eyes of the law!
This movie was a groundbreaking depiction of homosexuality and AIDS suffering when it was released in the early 1990s and it stands the test of time as a compassionate plea for our basic humanity, no matter our sexual orientation or health status. It's a story about an ordinary lawyer who is terminated by his firm because of their backwards attitudes and who engages another lawyer, one with some outward homophobia, to take the law firm to court over its unjust termination. It's a great courtroom drama with a wonderful sense of its setting, the eponymous city of Philadelphia, and great acting.
One of my favourite movies. So moving, so important, so well written and acted. I cry every time
Very entertaining movie even if it's depiction of the subject matter is somewhat simple minded the performance of Mary Steenburgen as one of the lawyers in particular is excellent
Definitely a movie that came in the right time, personally a cult film that is worth gold
Noteworthy watching, given that it’s inspired by a real case.
