Pirate Radio Reviews

Pirate Radio is a film about the beginning of an age, and it captures that energy quite well. The plot may be treated in perhaps too fluffy a manner, but it’s an enjoyable experience, even if it was chopped and abbreviated by the distributor.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Aug 30, 2023

The camera in Pirate Radio won't stop wobbling - it's so damn annoying.

| Mar 19, 2021

In Curtis's somewhat primitive view of things, the 1960s prove to have been about sleeping with whomever you liked, vaguely anarchic attitudes, and listening to loud music.

| Feb 13, 2021

The cast are such old salts that they can't help but raise smiles and even the odd belly laugh, but the film's sexual politics will leave many viewers queasier than a sailor in a force 10 gale.

But there is a sense that we've seen it all before from Curtis; this is essentially Love Actually-on-sea, and anyone who can't stomach his special brand of happy-ever-after won't find much to tempt them here.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Oct 29, 2019

Not only do the cliché characters, ridiculous plot points and extended run time sink this ship, Pirate Radio also neuters any song that appears on its soundtrack.

| Original Score: 1/5 | Oct 16, 2019

Mr. Curtis has delightfully re-created that storied era, making Pirate Radio the most fun you'll have in a movie theater this year.

| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Dec 1, 2018

The film is a tad cluttered but wildly entertaining, and if you don't go see it, definitely buy the soundtrack.

| Nov 13, 2018

The Boat That Rocked is pointless, shapeless, historically bogus and so emotionally disengaging you can't even feel the soundtrack.

| Aug 29, 2018

At the very least, it will have you feeling all gooey and nostalgic about a time you may not have been around for.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Oct 21, 2014

It is a great cast and the perfect one for a group of oddballs such as this. If only the script had been able to match the caliber of the acting, there might have been a really special film here.

| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Sep 25, 2012

thinly drawn plot, thinner characters

| Jan 31, 2011

Comedy flounders in a sea of mediocrity.

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Jan 2, 2011

No morals, no shame and good music; who wouldn't want to climb aboard Radio Rock?

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Aug 14, 2010

... a perfectly enjoyable comedy that never strays beyond its playlist of colorful personalities and comic antics.

| Apr 18, 2010

The movie's far more about the camaraderie between the DJs and the love of music that's shared between them and their listeners than it is about their struggle to stay on the air.

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Jan 20, 2010

Curtis' crew, although piloting a fairly flimsy vessel, plot-wise, sure knows how to have fun, armed as they are with one of the most memorable classic-rock sound tracks this side of Forrest Gump.

| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Dec 11, 2009

the sort of ensemble comedy in which each member of the ensemble tends toward one-dimensionality but it's mostly OK because there are so many members, and they're all so talented.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Dec 10, 2009

Overstates the Establishment-vs.-youth culture impact of Britain's real-life offshore radio stations...

| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Dec 9, 2009

Fun, fun, fun until the Prime Minister takes the T-Bird away.
