Planes, Trains and Automobiles Reviews

This is such a funny movie! This will keep you and your family laughing for sure. This is such a heartwarming comedy. The journey that Del (John Candy) and Neal (Steve Martin) share is just too funny! Such a feel good film. Watch it!

Perfect, quality film

I remember the trailers market it as a slapstick comedy and there is some of that, but it’s much more than that. What a great funny and well written journey with these two actors who have great chemistry together. Really shows what these two can do as actors. John Candy is great in this and he is missed.

Flawless. Plenty of laughs at the right times, and plenty of sweet, sentimental, thoughtful moments. It’s a brilliant weave with two outstanding actors at the lead. This is perhaps John Candy’s best performance of all. It’s a Thanksgiving tradition for us. An absolute must see every year. And every years we still laugh and smile and get teary eyed.

Absolutely one of the funniest movies ever made! Steve Martin and John Candy play two characters who are polar opposites. The adventures of the two of them trying to get home for the holidays is one of the funniest movies ever made. Just about the time you think it can’t get worse, it does! I am watching it now for at the fourth time.

John Candy was a very good actor. Even got a couple laughs out of me during this farce.

It is a difficult thing to have two characters who work so poorly together to also have such great chemistry together. But that is exactly what John Hughes does in this classic comedy. John Candy and Steve Martin are such a delight on screen together, as Neal Page and Del Griffith respectively. Despite Page absolutely despising Griffith for the majority of the runtime, it is never painful to watch. The set up for this movie is quite simple. The whole story is about two different characters trying to make it home for Thanksgiving. But due to adverse weather conditions and other shenanigans, the two run into various problems. John Hughes is able to milk every ounce of comedic potential off of this set up. John Hughes was a trailblazer in many ways, and this film created a slew of bad imitators. Movies that borrow the reluctant partnership duo but fail to understand what made this work. What is unique in this film compared to its copycats, is Neal explodes with anger against Griffith, pretty early in the journey. It isn't a big 3rd act reveal that he doesn't like this guy, it is made clear from the onset. That makes the follow ups all the more awkward, and all the funnier. It is also less frustrating for the audience, because the characters have communicated their points. "The making of" for this movie is also quite fascinating. The mishaps for filming the movie, seem to rival the mishaps that happen to our two main characters. As far as what keeps me from giving this a perfect score, the movie goes a little too over the top for my liking. Hughes has the ability to take reality and then just take it one step beyond. And depending on your own sense of humor, that may be where all the best jokes happen. But for me, sometimes it tipped to the side of silly, making the comedy feel less impactful. All in all, it is an excellent comedy. Great acting from Martin and Candy. Great story telling by John Hughes. Good relatable issues. And some very sweet, sentimental moments. John Hughes has "Home Alone" and "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" for Christmas. He has "Planes, Trains & Automobiles" for Thanksgiving. Watch the film and you will be grateful that you did.

I think this is a lovely movie which is mostly a comedy but has some poignant moments. I have to always view this on Thanksgiving. I definitely recommend this.

Few movies make their point with such symmetry, let alone make you laugh with delight, let alone leave you gratefully wiping away tears. But PT&A does all three, while showcasing two comedy geniuses at the top of their games. Neal (Steve Martin) has almost everything, yet is cynical and grouchy. Del (John Candy) has next-to nothing, yet is big-hearted and cheerful. They get stuck together trying to get home for Thanksgiving, setting up misadventures generated partly by Del's nutty solutions, and perhaps by divine intervention intended to teach Neal a lesson. Neal spends most of the movie wishing he'd never met Del, and at the end realizes that it was one of the best things that ever happened to him, and how much he had to be thankful for.

Best Thanksgiving movie ever!

Haven’t watched this is a good 10 years. Think I remember it more fondly than it actually is. The plot/character development is pretty weak, with a lot of clunky, ham fisted scenes to that end… tons of montages. The mishaps eventually just come off as lazy and predictable, and Candy’s arch ultimately finds me feeling more irritated by him than the intention of being a lovable oaf. Last half hour or so are overly sentimental. Still a fun enough nostalgia watch for the holiday, but it’s a much more of a mid tier Hughes movie than I recalled. Used to put it among his best, not even close. Overrated and will likely never watch again.

Great story and cast. Our grandsons first time to watch and they thoroughly enjoyed it! I forgot how stressful the first 1/2 hour is. The audience really laughed and enjoyed Steve Martin and John Candy.

One of the best casting choices ever having these two together.

What he really wanted was to spend Thanksgiving with his family. What he got was three days with the turkey. Planes, Trains and Automobiles is a 1987 American road trip comedy film written, produced, and directed by John Hughes 🏡 It’s not perfect and there are a few scenes that probably should have been edited or cut, but if you ignore these minor detractions this is an entertaining movie with some very funny scenes as well as some heartwarming moments… It’s very good! 😀 I’d definitely recommend it 👍🏼 An irritable marketing executive, Neal Page, is heading home to Chicago for Thanksgiving when a number of delays force him to travel with a well meaning but overbearing shower curtain ring salesman, Del Griffith.

Steve Martin and John Candy were great in this film. This movie is hilarious. One of the few Thanksgiving movies that I’ve seen. John Hughes is a terrific director.
