The Player Reviews
All Time Classic. A happy cynical meta satire of Hollywood. The opening 8 minute long take is masterful. Altman's direction is superb here. Lots of scenes feel like were watching distantly and all other trademarks of his are here but they never get in the way of a truely masterful mystery. It's not too dark either and it takes the cliches of Hollyood and flips them on there heads as much as embracing them with love and respect. First rate all around. Everyone should give this a try once.
Disappointed after great reviews. Found it slow then predictable. After 30 minutes of nothing much happening I’d have quite happily given up but partner thought something might happen ( his review vey the end was a 3). There are many cameo appearances from famous stars to spot which is its redeeming feature
Got as far as far as the opening credits. Irritating!
Watch it without reading too much about the plot. The twists and turns and surprises are so fun. This is a first-rate (I guess 5 star?!) film.
I was blown away, wondering how I have never heard of such a great film. You'll love it, you'll hate it, it will hold you until the end.
The Player is well-crafted but also a bit too preoccupied with itself to be able to tell a story with relevance. It's a star spangled show and it says a great deal about Hollywood, but also a great deal less about mankind in general.
Riveting. Flawless. Hysterical.
Although it's a slow film, The Player is a brilliant Hollywood satire that exposes the industry's darker side. Flaunting a cast of talented actors and a few astounding cameos, the film combines humor and suspense to tell its riveting story. If one can muster the patience to sit through its awful pace, it's well worth watching.
A satirical movie about Hollywood, studios and movies. What makes a good movie? And who gets to decide it? This kind of satire will feel differently to Hollywood insiders than outsiders, but it's relevant to everyone. Besides the satire, it has some comedic value, and unrealistic moments. It is a bit flat and repetitive. How many conversations about scripts are enough? How many threatening postcards should a producer receive?
Very solid movie definitely worth a watch
I forgot how good this movie is. I saw it in High School and liked it but I didn't appreciate it until I started working in Hollywood. Then I really got it. This Hollywood satire may be director Robert Altman's finest film and that's saying a lot from such an accomplished filmmaker. Same can be said about Tim Robbins, who has turned in many stellar performances but none better than the slimy Hollywood executive he plays here. I haven't watched in years but this latest viewing has it vaulting up my list to the perfect 10s. The amount of A-List cameos alone is worth a watch. I wish I had seen in it theaters because that opening, one shot scene was cinematic brilliance at every level.
This is one savage satire of the ruthless side of Hollywood and the lengths people go to get made! Movies, madness and murder ensue as the lines between morality begin to fade as the curse of show business encampens the entire cast. No one is worth rooting for in this world as likable heroes only exist in the realm of film!
I don't know if I missed something but this movie did nothing for me. Even though it was made years before the Big Lebowski something about it wishes it was the Big Lebowski. It just doesn't land in any way shape or form. I would love to know how this movie got good reviews.
Unusually for me, I enjoyed a film based upon the movie industry. This one was more focused on the murder than filmmaking which made it tolerable. Bought in DVD a while back.
Another Hollywood satire by Robert Altman. Absolutely enjoyed the plot and the screenplay, and this has all the Hollywood movie element according to the saying in this film. Interesting casting, nice to see Richard E. Grant as the British writer. A bit overwhelmed by the huge cameo appearances. The opening sequence gripped me to get into it. Curious to see the full story of Habeas Corpus.
Convoluted mess. Bad casting. Yuk
Lame Hollywood slap-fest.
