Poetic Justice Reviews
I just saw this movie for the first time in 2025. And I must say even though the two leads are iconic stars with an accomplished director. The movie fell so flat. I must say even though I finished it because that’s just what I do the movie was garbage. No cohesion no direction to the story just a trifling drunk and a stuck up poet who you never even really get to hear the poetry outside a little snippet. It had promised but failed to deliver.
Poetic Justice (1993) is a movie in my DVD collection that I recently rewatched on Tubi. The storyline follows a woman whose boyfriend was killed and she's struggling to move on. Her girlfriend invites her to join her and her boyfriend on a weekend trip that includes the boyfriend's best friend. At first the couple get along while the girlfriend and best friend fight like cats and dogs, then it becomes vice versa. A rollercoaster of scenarios and circumstances ensue where they hope to finish their trip without killing each other. This movie is directed by John Singleton (Boyz N the Hood) and stars Janet Jackson (Nutty Professor II), Tupac (Juice), Joe Torry (Tales from the Hood), Regina King (The Watchmen) and Khandi Alexander (Scandal). The Billy Zane and Lori Petty drive-in opening movie always makes me laugh. It was also awesome seeing Q-Tip and Tone Loc in this movie. The storyline itself is very smart and well told and paced. The soundtrack and poetry is excellent as is the writing and dialogue. The cast delivers perfect performances and scenarios and circumstances setup a rewarding conclusion. Overall, this is an absolute must see movie and an American cinematic classic. I would strongly recommend this movie and score it an easy 10/10.
This movie is so boring, I only watched it cause Tupac and Janet Jackson were in it but I was disappointed, there's nothing intriguing in it, the script is so predictable and lackluster.
While this is a beautiful angle from the collection of John Singleton movies that capture the underprivileged black community in California, there simply isn't enough depth in the story to keep me entertained beyond the witty dialogue.
An urban love story. Full of pain and loneliness. Janet Jackson is believable as justice. It's an urban cult classic with a memorable supporting cast such as Regina King and 2Pac with lots of memorable catchphrases.
I loved watching Miss Jackson acting in this movie; her soft, adorable character was movie ASMR. The supporting couple were great additions to this road trip romance. Tupac Shakur, in my eyes could only play one character in his movies; an angry, chipped over-actor. juice, gridlock'd, bullit, above the rim, were all an angry, aggressive figure. I don't think this was a fluke as he seemed to have had this attitude in his day to day life also. This puts the movie in a different light. He does attempt the slightly goofy approach in the film, which is truly appreciated. The movie, in all, is a well paced ‘diary style' coming of age pt2 movie. Janet's narration saves it several times over during the playthrough. It's in the collection next to boyz n the hood and higher learning (singleton section) where it will remain.
Genuinely moving and authentically Black, Poetic Justice is an unfairly judged film worthy of critical reappraisal. Some noticeable technical errors prevent it from being a masterpiece.
I was interested in this film after learning that both Janet Jackson and Tupac appear as main characters and when I read the credits, I discovered the poetry featured in the film is by Maya Angelou (who wrote 'Why The Caged Bird Sings'). I felt the first half of the film was fairly typical, a bit predictable - not bad but ok but the second half was better. It felt really rather poignant by the end. I certainly enjoyed the imagery and meaning of the various poems recited by the narration/voice-over and I liked the ending, although it's not an especially easy film to stick with or to feel engrossed by at first. It's not a bad film by any means but it doesn't stand out much in the first half of it. Overall I'd cautiously recommend it, yes.
LOL, the funniest 01 hour: and 50 minutes ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Beautiful story told through the eyes of Mr. Singleton. This movie grew to be appreciated more in the years after its release.
While rough around the edges and at some points dry, Poetic Justice delivers a story that touches on urban life and struggles along with a healthy amount of comedy. Tupac shows once again a good variety of acting ability and shines well alongside Janet. Poetic Justice is a great and critical piece to the urban culture as well as a fun dramady.
They "critics consensus" you have at the top is fucking racist. You're frustrated by John Singleton's lack of discipline? How about you go fuck yourself?
This is a masterpiece. John Singleton was revolutionary in his portrayal of African Americans in a time when the landscape for us was pretty bleak. He humanized us to the popular culture. The movie was like Shakespeare in the hood. If watched with a critical eye one would be able to better appreciate the artistry. It was genius!
Underrated movie. This movie is top tier funny. Janet Jackson can't act, that's for sure but the supporting cast picks it up. Tupac is a super underrated actor as well. Do not sleep on this movie.
This movie is honestly a classic. Its a real street romance lol. Funny and very enjoyable to watch over and over.
This movie is so real and so raw. Every detail in this film is so important and gives viewer insight into, the lives and issues of African Americans. I feel that the critic score for this movie is low because of lack of understanding. If you can't relate to something or never lived or seen it, it's difficult to understand.(most of them were white males of course)Regardless John Singleton did a phenomenal job with this film and each character played a pivotal roll. This film was executed so beautifully and it'll forever be one of my favorite movies.
