Police Academy Reviews

Apr 7, 2025

First in the series of movies about misfit police recruits trying to survive the academy. Super silly and very 80's, but a good time can be had if you lower your expectations and remember the era this movie was made in.

'Police Academy' is proper lacklustre. I didn't find any of it amusing, even so I can usually see why a film may actually work for others - not here. Given I've heard of this franchise, I assume folk enjoy these so I am a tad surprised. To me, it's just all a rather limp effort. The characters have one joke associated to them (e.g. tall man, quiet woman, wannabe war guy etc.) and it's just repeated numerous times throughout the movie; it doesn't get any funnier. How many times do they play the theme song, btw? It is catchy to be fair, but damn. Michael Winslow is the only plus that I have for this. I wasn't aware of him until this very moment, those voice sounds are outrageously brilliant; even had me questioning if they were dubbed over sound effects. Awesome talent! Of the rest of the cast, Donovan Scott is the 'best' (?). I found lead Steve Guttenberg to be more annoying than anything else, shame we never got Bruce Willis instead; he auditioned for the role, so I read. Elsewhere, Kim Cattrall is underused; interesting to see her 'Mannequin' co-star G. W. Bailey in this though, he is OK. Despite everything, in the end when the credits rolled around I didn't hold any annoyance or anything towards the flick. The feeling is more so how lame and low quality it comes across, I expected snappier comedy. Lastly, how are there 7 of these movies?! I'm in for a ride...

Not sure how anyone can hate on this movie although I only see a few critics giving it a bad review. I was 9 when this movie came out and I still love it to this day as much as I loved it then. Maybe it's nostalgia or the reminder of simpler times in life & the world but this movie always puts a smile on my face and puts me at ease. Might I might add that a young Kim Cattrall is a always bonus.

A comedy that has been infamous for 40 years even spawning several sequels Mayor Mary Beal has changed the requirements of the city's police force New recruits would no longer have any restrictions signing up A colorful cast includes Steve Gutenberg, Kim Catrall to name a few This follows along the lines of other spoofs such as Naked Gun and Monty Python with a hint of Stripes So many jokes and visual gags that are part of the every day norm in this world The recruits have to of course face certain scrutiny or face being washed out A lot of this humor wouldn't fly today being more PC but this was a product of the time being what they had to work with It does make for a silly watch though putting a humorous spin on the police force poking at authority The most lively scene has to be the city's rioters since all the recruits are called in The movie is mostly erratic but fun in all the right ways

Undoubtedly one of the greatest film comedies of all time. Yes bits and pieces of it stand out a bit in today's ultra-PC world but the film doesn't have a mean bone in its body. The film and it's brilliant cast want only one thing - to make you laugh. And they'll succeed!

A cheesy yet enjoyable comedy and an 80's classic. Doesn't keep up with a lot of similar modern comedies but certainly contains some great humour that you would not find in a movie of this decade.

Hands down a highlight of 1980's comedy. You absolutely have to suspend reality in order for any of this movie to take place but once you do its a delight. A decent combination of over-the-top (almost eye roll) gags combined with some actual heartfelt moments. A good time overall.

Part of me did want to see the first 'Police Academy' film for a while now, but the bad reputations of the sequels and that the style of humour 'Police Academy' has has been done really badly elsewhere that it did admittedly put me off. Seeing all the films recently, for curiosity and giving the benefit of the doubt, while the sequels are really not good on the most part the original 'Police Academy' is and is rightly considered the best of the series. 'Police Academy' is never going to be one of my favourite films, and won't be in my list of favourite comedies any time soon, but, taking it for what it is and what it set out to do, it entertained for most of the just over an hour and a half running time. It is a bit hit and miss in places, not all the jokes work (most do though), due to going a little too heavily on the childish and cheap low-brow factors. That said, nothing is distasteful at least, nothing makes you want to gag or make you go to the bathroom and throw up copiously (which is more than can be said for stuff like 'Freddy Got Fingered' and the worst of Adam Sandler). 'Police Academy's' story is rather thin, with less eventful parts leaving some rather draggy stretches, and gets a bit silly. Kim Catrall does a good job being sexy and sassy but she is given little to do and the film didn't seem to know what to do with her. However, 'Police Academy' is competently made visually, not stunning but hardly cheap. The setting looks good too and is well utilised. The soundtrack is catchy and infectious, fitting the tone perfectly. While it has been said that not everything in the humour works, most of it does, the crudeness is mostly not overdone and the silliness is mostly endearing. Much of the dialogue is hilarious and there are set pieces that raise at least a couple of big belly laughs, the highlights being the speech scene (absolutely hilarious and to me the single best and funniest scene of the whole 'Police Academy' series) and the scenes with Copeland and Blankes. Steve Guttenberg seems to be really enjoying himself, and is a fun and amiable presence. Easy to see why his role here made him a star at the time, even if somewhat briefly. George Gaynes is a hoot and GW Bailey is suitably hard nosed, which provides some entertaining conflict. Everyone else is fine too. Overall, good fun film that never tries to be more than it is and knows what it wants to be. Hit and miss perhaps, but when it hits man isn't it entertaining. 7/10 Bethany Cox

My dad always liked watching this movie when it came on t.v. and I thought I would check it out myself and I was decently glad that I did! Some of the stuff in this movie doesn't really hold up anymore with the kind of jokes that were made and the kinds of things that can be said, but I can definitely see why this was well regarded for the time that it came out! I liked how a lot of the characters were made unique and how their archs played out. There was a good amount of subtle humor that worked too (how the commandant looked briefly under the podium before he gave his final speech, etc). The guy who ran the drills and lessons acted well too!

A funny movie from a funny era.

Police Academy is an okay film. It is about a group of good-hearted, but incompetent misfits enter the police academy. Steve Guttenberg and G.W. Bailey give decent performances. The screenplay is a little slow in places. Hugh Wilson did an alright job directing this movie. I liked this motion picture because of the humor.

Although this film hasn't aged well it still manages to make some great jokes that were really edgy and crude for the time the film was made.
