Poltergeist Reviews

Why did we need a “Poltergeist” remake?

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Aug 24, 2022

The main problem here is the filmmakers haven't done anything significantly new with the material, so there are few surprises worth noting—unless you count how this remake isn't terrible, just pointless.

| Original Score: 2/4 | Jun 21, 2022

Just completely unnecessary.

| Original Score: C | Aug 10, 2021

It seems like it was purely made for 3d viewers.

| Original Score: 5/10 | Jun 1, 2021

Outside of a few modernized visuals, there's really nothing new or fresh or even frightening about this tragically familiar ghost movie.

| Original Score: 2/10 | Dec 4, 2020

What this remake is sorely missing, that the original had in spades, is heart and magic.

| Jul 7, 2020

Poltergeist isn't one of those remakes that pisses on the corpse of the original, but it doesn't do much with the framework either.

| Original Score: C- | Jul 5, 2020

'Poltergeist' is a bland film that avoids committing any possible stupidity, but also lacks any kind of particularity beyond the aspects necessary for the action to take place today. [Full Review in Spanish]

It is a thousand leagues away from capturing a portion of the charisma that any of the members of the predecessor cast had. [Full Review in Spanish]

Otherwise, as far as horror remakes go, this ranks amongst Evil Dead and The Hills Have Eyes as one of the better ones.

| Apr 9, 2020

Rockwell and DeWitt are solid and there's fresh blood in this reboot at first. Yet, the dependency on lazy scare tactics neuter this reboot, making you yearn for the original.

| Original Score: 2/5 | May 10, 2019

You can do a lot worse than the new Poltergeist film, but on every conceivable level you can do better by simply watching the original film again.

| Feb 3, 2019

Everything is spelled out, so much so that it completely kills any tension that could have been built.

| Original Score: C- | Jan 23, 2019

POLTERGEIST is truly lacking is the macabre and erratic behavior that made the 1980s a golden age in horror.

| Original Score: C- | Dec 19, 2018

The Poltergeist remake is not likely to add anything to the filmic horror lexicon, but in terms of genre summer programming, it must be said that it's better than some of the original material currently out there.

| Original Score: B | Dec 19, 2018

Disappointing when it isn't mind-numbingly dull, the reboot of Poltergeist is a tedious, cynical failure of cinematic science.

| Original Score: 3/10 | Oct 31, 2018

It is just too much of a pill to swallow to follow these dumdums on their quest to save poor Maddie. Honestly, Maddie might be better off in the light.

| Original Score: 5/10 | Oct 24, 2018

Though Rockwell and DeWitt give the material their own likable spin, most of the story mechanics will be familiar to anyone who has seen the original Poltergeist.

| Original Score: C+ | Sep 14, 2018

Drowning in horror tropes and lacking the campy DIY looking ethic of the original that we all enjoyed, Poltergeist falls incredibly short of the success of 2013's Evil Dead remake and would have probably done better off as a re-release

| Aug 24, 2018

Humor and quirky personalities make this remake a more enjoyable and welcomed reboot to the original.
