What to Know

Critics Consensus

A slow-burning spectral thriller, Presence reaffirms that Soderbergh plays with form as deftly as he flits between genres.

Audience Says

Like the ghost at its center, Presence is a voyeuristic slow burn that may not satisfy those seeking traditional horror but may spook those who appreciate well-executed psychological thrillers.

Tara Brady Irish Times As with Kimi and Unsane, Soderbergh occasionally has more fun with the constraints than we do. There’s nothing as compelling or creepy as Kristen Stewart’s dance with the unseen in Personal Shopper. Rated: 3/5 Feb 28, 2025 Full Review Christy Lemire FilmWeek (LAist) I love that after all these decades as a filmmaker, Soderbergh still likes to do these cool little experimental larks. Feb 11, 2025 Full Review Peter Rainer FilmWeek (LAist) It's a gimmick... But it's a good gimmick, not one I had really seen before. Feb 11, 2025 Full Review Sharai Bohannon Blerdy Massacre Podcast A really cool concept with so many talented actors. However, that's about as far as it goes. Rated: 2.5/5 Apr 15, 2025 Full Review Abhishek Srivastava The Times of India ...an intriguing cinematic experiment that may engage only a select group of audiences but disappoint those expecting genuine horror. Rated: 3/5 Apr 4, 2025 Full Review Tamma Moksha The Hindu While Soderbergh is inconsistent in his attempt at manufacturing a tale of silent familial dysfunction and misery, Presence as a project still holds value. Jason POV of a ghost, a big brother's redemption, the life of a busy woman and a father whose only weapon is asking for help. Not your typical horror movie, but it's a nice message. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/17/25 Full Review Sheri A slow build … I really liked this movie it’s unlike any ghost / haunting movie I’ve ever seen. The tension building atmosphere and authentic performances hook you in. The movie does start slow but as the tension builds you become captivated and invested in the story of this family and this house. There is a major twist towards the end that comes as a complete surprise. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/13/25 Full Review Aj Was able to guess the ending but otherwise had me hooked Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/03/25 Full Review Jeremy W A rather boring, but altogether solid contribution to the paranormal genre. I would have rated it lower had the final scene not been absolutely perfect. Salvaged the whole viewing for me. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/08/25 Full Review Jayvaun I’m sorry but it was awful. Scary movies just aren’t scary anymore. Maybe it wasn’t meant to be scary… Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/19/25 Full Review lester great film., really neat premise.
