Prevenge Reviews

Oct 13, 2023

I thought this movie would be goofy and fun, but instead it was pessimistic and awkward. The movie has such a great premise, but unfortunately it just drags on and doesn't capitalize. It does have a few funny moments, but for the most part the pregnant mom-to-be character's cynicism rubs off on the viewer. She makes it abundantly clear that she's very unhappy, and in doing so manages to make me just as unhappy watching her.

Not quite Sightseers

I'm not quite sure what prompted me to watch this. Oh well, live and learn. Quite peculiar story.

Everything about this movie was great. Will definitely view again!

I really struggled with Prevenge. I read a review somewhere that called it "pitch black," and I think that nails it. There are comedic elements in a few places which feel really odd given the tone of most of the rest of the movie. It's essentially a much more vicious Promising Young Woman with our anti-heroine being seven months pregnant. That being said, huge kudos to Alice Lowe who played the very pregnant lead/writer/director.

Great movie. Kind of a slow burn. A great view into the mind of a woman who is looking for love to be given to her only to realize you need to have it for yourself first. 🌟 This gets 4 stars for great acting, visual style (at times purposely amateur), moody soundtrack and the story is believable, albeit hokey. Wait, I take that back, Ruth might come for me and judge me as cruel or unfeeling 😆 😆 See it if you like a good character study. The body count is important but is never ugly in the traditional horror sense; it seems right for impact and from the view of its miserable star it seems to look like the evil she feels. I recommend it to any mom, dad, or single people considering going down the road of matrimony. @DJFreedomLives

I was disappointed with this movie. There's not a lot of substance to it

The killing scenes could have been more creative, they felt very repetitive. The story was just borderline ok, there were a lot of times the movie could have worked out well had it have funny moments or suspense, which I felt were sadly missing.

The high critic score is an utter mystery to me. This is one of the worst films I have seen in a long time. Not scary, or dark or funny (a bad start for a black comedy), not clever, not captivating, completely predictable, morally vacuous, and a concept as awful and stupid as the voice of the baby itself. Basically, the unborn baby tells the mother to kill people (fairly normal ones, mostly), and the mother does it. Then, when the baby is born, she says "oh! It's not taking to me anymore, it must have been me all along". Sigh... Maybe that's supposed to be the joke, I don't know... In addition, I was struggling to identify any PREvenge - it was all REvenge (for her partner's death), with some mindless killing of innocent bystanders thrown in. Stupid film.

Let me start by saying this is a good, honest opportunity for underground comedy legend Alice Lowe to write, direct and star in a timely good old fashioned British comedy horror. In the Ben Wheatley style it's a low budget vehicle for its plethora of dynamite British comedy actors to dance with some deliciously funny slicing life dialogue. It's directed capably and is a great meditation on pregnancy. Unfortunately it's a bit of a missed opportunity. It could be a real modern classic with a bit better structure and editing, some tweaks in the story and some better exploration of the premise (which is pretty wicked) and even maybe some better creative direction, ie. don't hear the voice of the baby, make it a bit creepier and subtler, and maybe bring in some depth, red herrings, to the premise. But learning that Lowe shot this whilst actually pregnant and over 11 days including picks ups, that's an amazing feat. And for something undoubtedly low budget, this film looks brilliant.

where the heck is the police?! lol. she killed a ton of people & unless she's great at covering everything up afterwards which i highly doubt/they didn't show on screen, there should be cops everywhere. so the story itself is pretty unrealistic, not to mention hearing your unborn baby's thoughts telling you to do all this is sort of a ridiculous plot point anyways. but it wasn't completely terrible; for as bad as it sounds it actually wasn't that painful to watch. however i wouldn't recommend it and/or watch it a second time though.

Ruth is lost her husband in a climbing accident and ever since then she has been hearing the voice of her unborn baby who has urged her to commence a killing spree, dispatching anyone she feels is responsible for the absence of the father. Ruth struggles with her conscience but is ultimately controlled by the bump she carries around with her. As you can see from the synopsis this film is a unique one, you won't have seen anything else like this since, well...forever. Alice Lowe who first game to my attention in the brilliantly dark, funny and twisted Sightseers has written and directed her own dark and twisted and funny tale with Prevenge. It won't be to everyone's taste but if you enjoyed her performance in Sightseers you will like this one too.

Alice Lowe wrote, directed, and starred in 'Prevenge' and it's pretty neat. A throwback to the B Movie days even the opening and closing credits pay homage to movies past. It's a light horror comedy and it's very witty. There are a lot of subtle laughs that engage the viewer. If you're locked in and not afraid of a little gore this could be right up your alley. Oh and Lowe was eight months pregnant during the filming! Final Score: 7.7/10

Several years ago I got my first viewing of an Alice Lowe 'comedy horror' watching Sightseers so I looked forward to fast forwarding a few years watching Prevenge. I saw the trailer at the cinema but missed the original release in 2016 but caught up with this on a streaming site. Lowe stars, writes and directs this feature. Not bad going! The story is basically of a pregnant lady who in the midst of pre-natal depression commits gruesome murders. Why? The film appears to show her being overcome by the voice of her unborn baby to commit such acts. Is she really hearing the baby, or is it her mashed up head? Poor DJ, weirdo pet shop worker, ruthless interviewee and charity boxer woman. A low budget British film that really is a black comedy horror in the mould of films like An American Werewolf...without the werewolf. Just an angry pregnant lady. Perhaps made worse by the untimely death of her partner in a climbing accident. Worthy of a 90 minute watch in my opinion. A film not to be taken seriously.

Feels like an extended Blue Jam sketch. Baggy direction. Very bloody not scary.

Jan 27, 2018

Slow-burning black comedy horror, actually an interesting character study too, with an often dreamlike quality.

Jan 25, 2018

Low budget with crude effects...likely needed to go darker or funnier as it manged neither particularly well...but some scenes will give you a laugh if you have a dark mind and it is a film like few others.

Avoid this like a hot mess on the side walk O M G after the bogus 95% Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB ratings which will only selectively let you rate this mess., I watched this mindless nonsensical garbage where you keep hoping that this is somewhat an "avant garde" film that will make some artistic and poignant artwork of it all. Well it doesn't! What a piece of garbage. This is a film that you would get if you gave "just anyone" a low budget, a small "camera crew" and a story line that was based from whim. If you like the depth and musical genius that springs forth from a black-eyed peas "song, you'd love this uhm "movie". She stole an hour and half of my time. Just wait for the ending. Bravo. 5 out of 5 Flushes.

Reminded me of watching friends' film school projects. It's not Terrible and there is some really decent acting and a cute guy, but it's amateurish af, completely predictable. and that ending is a disaster.

Intermittently amusing but just like 'Sightseers' that Lowe also starred in you feel that it's stretching matters to say this is a feature film. Massively outstays it's welcome by the end.
