The Proposition Reviews
It was pretty slow. On top of that I basically figured out the ending in the first few minutes. Finally, it was one of those movies where they seemed to add elements just to make it offbeat. The score was strange and there were various odd things sprinkled in that didn’t really advance the story at all and just seemed out of place.
Extremely long scenes with nothing happening, just a slow pan and depressing music. Unwatchable, after 40min I had to stop watching.
Brutal and beautiful. The savagery of 19th century Australian outback is captured in this gritty and original western masterpiece.
When I found out that Nick Cave wrote this film I knew I just had to see it, more out of curiosity than anything. I finally got to sit down and watch the movie and oh boy it did not disappoint. This western from Australia was gripping from beginning to end. The cast were all amazing and that ending left me saying wow. If you haven't seen the film than you should definitely do so. It is very much worth watching it at least once.
I tried. It was way too boring.
Tough review. Acting is top-notch. Cinematography is incredible. The story keeps you glued to the screen. So what's the problem? Jesus! The most unenjoyable movie ever made. Just darkness, so bleak. In the end, regardless of the skill involved in the production, you have to be able to enjoy a film a bit to recommend. Otherwise it's just probing an open wound.
If you want to see a movie that gives you a view of "hell", full of dour people who seem to have no reason for existence, other than a hardscrabble desire to stay alive at the expense of others, then this is it. Good/great performances by Ray W and Guy P, but unrelenting violence and a despairing view of humanity are negatives.
COULDN’T STOP WATCHING IT. SIMPLY ……FUN TO WATCH AND NEVER KNOWING WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN.
A classic. Nick Cave teams up with long time collaborator John Hillcoat to produce one of the best westerns seen in many a year. Brutal and uncompromising, this movie will stay with you long after you see it.
It was memorable and stylish with a lot of raw brutality and grittiness but also severely lacked a cohesive narrative with its focus on characters and backstory. The acting is phenomenal in this all around along with wonderfully done cinematography. The music is sparse and well used as also. The main problem comes from the fact that the film jumps around from Charlies quest to hunt down his brother back to the Captain and his wife than back to characters Charlies encounters along the way and while there well done scenes on their own they don't fit a cohesive narrative that flows. It works just enough where I get what is happening but not necessarily the motivations of these characters. Also the constant umping back and forth throughout makes it hard to stay focused and build tension because the Captains story is significantly slower than Charlies. though the pacing is ok it is a significant letdown given the quality of the acting and production value which is extremely well executed. This should've stay focused on Charlie and his development/backstory with his brothers and would've worked significantly better. Overall it was a decent film that did more right than wrong but I couldn't help but feel disappointed that the elements didn't come together well. I would say anyone who is a hardcore western fan or Guy Pearce fan should give this a try.
this film blew me away. I loved it. It's one of the best westerns and frankly one of the best dramas I have ever seen.
One of Australia's best western films, enough surprises, good humour, beautiful landscapes, shocking material and moments that grip you.
Phenomenal movie. Beginning with the opening scene and continuing throughout, the action packs a punch of gritty realism not often felt while watching a movie. The depth of the characters, the incredible performances, the detail of the setting, the masterful direction, the well written screenplay, and the often horrifying and raw actions of the Burns gang will combine to burn this film into your memory. This is one to sit back and admire.
A very underrated hard brutal Western from Australia.
A first-rate, honest, moving, sparse, and devastating movie. Hillcoat's direction was tight and well-paced. Cinematography was gorgeous, especially handling the symbolism and evanescent beauty of the sunsets. Winstone, Pearce, and Huston were remarkable. All 3 avoided the clichés usually associated with their character types. Emily Watson's talents were mostly wasted, except for the scene where she tells about her dream of the ghost baby. I also loved John Hurt in his short but effective time on screen. The most memorable aspect of the film for me was the focus on the brother's relationships and the impossible task given to Pearce's character. The second aspect was the comparison of the treatment of the Aboriginals in the Outback with the treatment of the American Indians in the West. I didn't know Nick Cave could write screenplays, although I am not surprised. Bravo. On the down side, the graphic gore was over the top and dragged down the movie. I also wanted to know the back story on the brothers. Why did they become outlaws?
I spent an hour and twenty minutes waiting for Emma Watson to appear until rechecking the cast and realising it was Emily Watson. Still, a well acted film, slow in parts but a well told story.
Aussie outback drama with some lovely cinematography touches in what was a hard tough time.
