Psycho II Reviews

Nov 8, 2024

A sequel no one asked for, to one of the greatest thrillers ever, 22 years later… and it is excellent! Quentin Tarantino called Anthony Perkins’ performance one of the best in horror history, and it’s hard to argue against that.

While nothing can match the original psycho II continues to astonish us with plenty of twists proving the psycho franchise isn't dead yet.

Psycho is one of my all time favorite films, a masterpiece of cinema. However it is no doubt a slow-burn film which works beautifully for that particular film and story. The sequel needed a fun scary modern edge that takes place years after the first story and the director accomplishes just that! It’s quicker paced, creepy, great characters, and an inventive storyline all of which pays respectful nods to the original. I even like how you start feeling bad for poor old Norman! I need to be in the right mood for the first film but I can throw Psycho II on anytime for a fun scare. I highly recommend the first 2 films they are both great in their own right, however the rest of them after that are complete and utter garbage I will drink a cup of poisoned tea before I watch any of those atrocities ever again.

Everybody knew we don't need a sequel but this sequel really works and different direction without Hitchcock making a sequel they bring a different director and to follow the footsteps of Hitchcock and Anthony Perkins performance is so tragic he wanted to have a normal life but others are targeting Norman to put him back in prison and award winning score Jerry Goldsmith did really outstanding raser sharp score.

A great horror-movie, even better than the 1960 movie!

Director Richard Franklin was daring to take this project on...This solid sequel to the masterpiece 1960 landmark slasher movie. This one focuses on Norman's efforts to move back home to Fairvale; after his 23 year stay at the local mental hospital; and rehabilitate himself; and readjust to normal life again. But unfortunately the sister of one of his victims is out to get him; and strange mother figure is hovering in the background ...As with part one we're led to believe it's a ghost story until the final reel...Good scripting, acting and stylish direction. Overall very good..

Norman Bates comes back with a whimper in this rotten-ish movie which is totally a cash grab.

Sublime character piece which in my opinion is an improvement on the original. This is how you do a sequel.

The plot gets F'd up towards the end but it's still entertaining. No where as good as the first movie though.

Never in all my born years did I think that a sequel to Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho would be good let alone a possible contender for one of the greatest slasher films of the 80s with gore and suspense to match. Anthony Perkins' performance in Psycho II is one of its greatest strengths, it's entirely new and completely nuanced in his deconstruction of a rehabilitated psychotic, coupled with some truly awesome direction by exploitation director Richard Franklin and Psycho II more than delivers. The brilliant score by Jerry Goldsmith adds to the legendary compositions of his late friend Bernard Herrmann, but with much more psychedelic choices in his combination of strings and synths. The only problem with Psycho II is its affiliation with the original so it inevitably draws unwanted comparisons but what it offers up instead is so genuinely unnerving and so quintessentially 80s that I can't help but love it.

CRIMINALLY UNDERRATED

Solid sequel that does a good job being a true sequel, even if the last minute twist comes out of nowhere. The cast is superb, with Anthony Perkins continuing his brilliant performance as Norman Bates, this time as a man trying to hold onto his sanity after years in a institution. He is matched nicely by the rest of the cast, particularly Meg Tilly as his new friend with a mysterious past. Behind the camera, director Richard Franklin & writer Tom Holland craft a true sequel, continuing where Bates left off and casting him as more a victim than criminal. Best of all, you never truly know if Norman has returned to his old way till the very end, though a last minute twist takes away from that. Overall, a highly underrated and worthy sequel to a true classic.

I found this movie to be better than the first because of all the questions it makes you ask.

" Psycho 11" takes the Norman Bates story and moves it on 22 years from the original Classic Hitchcock  thriller. Anthony Perkins returns to the roll of the troubled Motel Owner still fearing the wrath of his long dead mother. Let out of the institution where Norman has been residing since 1960 he returns home to the infamous Bates Motel. Vera Miles also reprises her original roll as Lila Loomis , angry and in disbelief that the murderer of her sister and husband has been allowed to go free. A great performance from Anthony Perkins breathes new life into Norman Bates, so much so that it's enough to keep the audience routing for Bates rather than his tormentors.
Despite the obvious issues regarding sequels, particularly to a film so revered , "Psycho 11" is its own stand alone movie and delivers an engaging and well crafted story.  However I do believe the diner owner, that employs Bates on his release, really needs to do better background checks on all the staff he employs.

Not sure what some folks didn't like about this one, but I thought it was pretty well done. It didn't take itself too seriously, and Anthony Perkins was enjoyable to watch once again in his old role.

I think this movie is a good example of how important it is to go into sequels with very low expectations. All anyone ever says about this and the next movie are how they're inferior to the original, which was always going to be the case, but I went into this expecting something really terrible. What I got instead was a really interesting story, one where it seemed clear the writer had tried hard to provide a compelling plot that uses the characters from the original and not a whole lot else. He certainly succeeded, and all it would've taken for real greatness here would have been an auteur filmmaker who shot it with a unique style the way Hitchcock had done; what we got instead was just completely serviceable viewing material. The twist at the end took me completely by surprise!

one might think " we didn't need a sequel " but Psycho 2 is a good sequel and there are some fresh ideas which perfectly work
