Punch-Drunk Love Reviews

Apr 16, 2025

One for all the freaks to relate to.

An invigorating character study, Punch-Drunk Love finds both Paul Thomas Anderson and Adam Sandler at the top of their game.

I saw this movie today 30/03/2025 I like all movies from Adam Sandler I really like, but this movie is not just comedy it’s a real face of a disturbing mind, it’s good to have a look on a different prospective about a angry person with a mental disorder and think about the world, have many persons and different minds you never know what will happen in next. I like too much this movie, congratulations for all the team

Absolutely hilarious!

I have to say, it was difficult to get my bearings on this one for the first 40 minutes or so, but I didn't mind the ride at all. The music, the chaos, the shifts in tone, and the unpredictable performances all coalesced to form a unique take on this "romantic comedy." But to be fair to the director and the performers alike, Punch-Drunk Love defies a cookie-cutter genre. This is one of my favorite performances from Sandler and it shows the range of talent he can bring to a production. Think you know where this is going? No, you don't. PDL is a tight 90ish minutes, but it does also take its time to immerse the audience in the events of Barry Egan, his co-workers, his sisters, the maniacal operator of a phone sex line in Utah, and of course, Lena, the love interest, played perfectly by Emily Watson. This one is waving me over for a repeat viewing, mostly because so much of the music and visuals can drift away if you aren't fully engaged.

A crazy mindf**k of a movie that’s carried by Adam Sandler’s wild performance and the thrilling direction. It’s a really weird and uncomfortable movie, but it’s so hypnotic and has a soft center with a genuinely sweet romance storyline.

Barry Egan just might be the most lovable character ever written by Paul Thomas Anderson. Adam Sandler gives a career best performance. The entire cast is unbelievable in Punch-Drunk Love. The sound design is marvelous. The blue color scheme is beautiful. Jeremy Blake's video art is on full display. The use of the overexposed light is nice. After Barry punches the wall, you can clearly see the word "love" on his knuckles. A nice touch by the director. I absolutely love the soundtrack. The Popeye song is great! Barry Egan found love and became something of a Popeye in his own right. P.T. Anderson's eye for detail is a big part of what makes him one of the greatest filmmakers of all time. This is a masterful example of his greatness. Punch-Drunk Love is one of my favorite films and I highly recommend it. 97/100

Punch-Drunk Love has its fair number of flaws, mostly that the two plotlines can often feel disconnected from one another and that they should've spent more time developing them. But I also really enjoyed this film, Adam Sandler does a great job, it's shot beautifully, and ultimately tells a pretty compelling story.

No business looking this good with beautiful/subtle lighting. Strange & random but a warm tone that is just lovely. The screenplay is ridiculous but masterfully crafted. Simple yet uniquely profound with a great score & cast.

Phillip Seymour Hoffman screaming shut up is sensational. Perioooood. Another interesting story by PTA, this is quirky, eerie, romantic, and intense. The movie quickly oscillates between chaos and calm as if you’re right inside Barry’s head, and you never truly know what to expect next.

A dark, unique, surreal and uncommon film with Adam Sandler.

The first part of the movie is just plainly unpleasant. A headache from so many perspectives… to give it some credit, we are somewhat thrown into the chaotic state of this novelty’s salesman. Right among his fears, worries and beliefs. We have a glimpse into the sorts of pressure he gets mostly out his equally chaotic sisters. But again it’s just too unpleasant. The second half has its good moments, but it still doesn’t make up for the unpleasantness of the first part.

This movie seems to overall be beloved by movie watchers. Positive ratings across the board, seems to have been well received. So, I was pretty surprised when I found myself really hating it. I always give serious Adam Sandler a chance, but I never am happy with the results. #Spaceman was ok, #UncutGems I found to have some exciting moments, but I just overall found it kinda lame. I think it really unfortunately comes down to Adam Sandler is a super relatable average guy and as a movie watcher, I kinda just don’t care. I feel we don’t want to see an average guy struggling with issues because tbh, we see that in life. There is nothing, in my opinion, overly moving about a socially awkward guy giving too much info to a sex hotline and opening up a series of following events. If anything, it’s just cringy and expected situation. Sure #PunchDrunkLove delivers some nifty camera work but I just kinda felt I watched a autistic man be autistic for 90min. There was a palpable anxiety but again…that’s my 9-5. It’s nothing that exciting but just enough for you to count the days till vacation. Maybe I missed something in the film or potentially even in life that would let me connect with why many people seem to love this movie. Because quite frankly, I thrive with quirky and weird movies quite often, but I did not vibe with this one.

Really good, and definitely Sandler's best performance of his career.

"Punch-Drunk Love" is an utter disappointment, failing to deliver anything worthwhile beyond its decent cinematography. The plot is lackluster and meanders without any real direction or purpose. Adam Sandler, known for his comedic roles, is completely out of his depth in this film. His attempt at a serious performance falls flat, lacking the nuance and depth required for such a role. He should definitely stick to comedy, where his talents are better suited. The storyline is supposed to be a quirky romantic comedy-drama, but it ends up being a confusing mess. The narrative drags on, leaving the audience wondering where it's going and why they should even care. The character development is practically nonexistent, making it hard to invest in or empathize with any of the characters. The only redeeming quality of "Punch-Drunk Love" is its cinematography. The visuals are well-crafted, with some interesting shots and creative use of color. However, good cinematography alone can't save a movie with such a weak plot and poor performances.

Another PTA quirk-fest, not awful but seriously unrealistic. What Lena could possibly see in Barry for one fleeting moment without slapping a restraining order on him is inexplicable.

Great movie if you are good with weird. My wife thought it was way too far out in left field but I thought it was terrific.

Such a uniquely put together movie, I definitely think it is worth a watch.

Punch drunk stupid. This does not make any sense as a movie. Characters do not make any sense. They do not a have a life story or if they do it is not supported by what we see. The characters speak nonsense. Even their love is based on such nothingness than superficial would be too deep to describe it. But the worst part is that this movie is incredibly boring. The only surprise is that they made Emily Watson look ugly.
