Despite being a huge Prince fan and having seen him live on more than one occasion, I had never seen the movie Purple Rain. I knew I had to put this right. Even as the most ardent fan I could never claim that this movie would trouble the Academy when it came to the acting or story but there can be no denying that the music is on another level. When he starts to play the title track and you hear the opening bars to Purple Rain, I could feel myself getting a little emotional. What an absolute legend. It is often said about celebrities who leave us at a young age that they have gone too soon. In the case of Prince it is tragically so true. Enjoy this film for the fabulous soundtrack. Ignore the story and acting.

A Musical Classic. The story is pretty basic and it doesn't really set up the characters that well but where this shines is the musical numbers. The music is fantastic especially the Purple Rain number at the end which is easily the highlight. The songs don't always fit the narrative of whats going on in the film well but there just so good you can look past it. The acting is pretty solid and the cinematography is really good. It's raw, good camerawork, very visually driven, and the musical numbers all pop with lights, color, and great performances. The ediitng isn't bad and even during the slower or lcunky moments the music and direction just carries honestly. It knows it's a musical oriented film first more than anything. It gives it a solid pacing. Anyone who is a fan of Prince, New Hollywood Era style musicals, or 80's stlye music in general should check this out.

The best movie in history

Morris Day plays a criminally underrated villain here. Give the man his due!

Worth seeing watching him in action singing dancing stage performance everything just watching him perform the songs with the rest of the band is just so beautiful. He was a truly talented man so if you ever get the chance to see it on the big screen do so. Ignore the dialogue and enjoy the performances when the songs are performed. Such a shame to lose him, but watch him in this movie, and as he sings the song purple rain, it will bring tears to your eyes, especially if you see it on the big screen.

A music movie with a stellar soundtrack that's set in Minneapolis?? Now you're speaking our language. AMAZING! Everything about it. Thank you, Prince.

Prince is THE KING. Always. 💜

It really bothers me that The Kid never says "I'm sorry" to Apollonia.

This movie has not aged well at all. Prince will always be remembered for his incredible musical skills. However, this movie is now as of 2024 officially truly embarrassing. Listen to the soundtrack. It's an undisputed masterpiece. This movie...um. Not so much.

Prince rocks in his film debut as the kid with an oscar winning soundtrack

This movie resonates with me more than any other movie, probably because of the circumstances under which I saw the movie for the first time. I was with Rick James, Prince's nemesis. You see, Rick had a competitive thing with Prince... they would show up at each other's concerts... and try to one up each other. Rick really had a jealousy toward Prince (not sure why). Unbeknownst to Rick, I was, and had been a huge!!!! Prince fan! And here I was, on my way to Westwood Theatres with Rick to see Purple Rain! And, it didn't disappoint. I was in awe! I loved the music, The movie only solidified my love for Prince and his music. After, back at the hotel, Rick and his entourage all talked about the movie they were going to write... which never transpired. And now here I sit, some 40 years later... this movie just came on, and it all took me back to that day! It still holds up for me; its artsy, and so so so Prince!

Basically a Prince music video with long breaks between the songs. Purple Rain has one banger of a soundtrack, and you get to watch Prince perform some of his greatest hits in his prime as a fantasy version of himself - an undiscovered Minneapolis club musician with a studded velvet suit, matching purple motorcycle, and a bedroom in his parent's house. His movie counterpart ('The Kid') navigates a club scene with a love interest (new-in-town Apollonia) and a rival, the similarly fictionalized version of longtime Prince collaborator Morris E. Day and his band, The Time. The Kid goes through a lot of melodramatic ups and downs, as his powerful stage persona carries him to local success even as he suffers setbacks from his own stubbornness, some bottled up anger, and a disturbed home life. Prince was a magnificent entertainer, with an outsized stage and real-life persona that couldn't be put into any well-defined box. But he wasn't really an actor. When Purple Rain lets him groove in front of the microphone, it's a hell of a movie; when he's "flirting" with Apollonia Kotero, you're left wondering if he's an alien. Most of the actors in this movie won't blow you away, with the notable exception of the villainous and charismatic Day. All the extra story pieces are immensely forgettable, even the Death of a Salesman/abuse backstory of The Kid's father, for all the dark places that it ends up going. Sometimes the direction really highlights the slick style that brings out Prince's cool factor, with swirling cigarette smoke and shadowy silhouettes. But for all the great music on display here, virtually all the good parts could have been delivered in a high-quality concert video. The way Prince walks makes me think that nobody else has really figured out how to walk. (2.5/5)

I was 11 when this film came out and successfully managed to get to see it in the theater twice. I couldn't see it by myself, so I had to have an adult present. Both my mom and even my grandmother enjoyed the film. I am a huge Prince fan. I have seen this film so many times, I have the dialog memorized. The music is great and although I think Vanity would have fit the love interest role better, it is still one of my all time favorite films.

Even if you are not a prince fan you could still find some enjoyment in it. But if you are a Prince fan like myself, there is a high chance you would like it. The story may not be a lot but the music is what really takes the whole movie which is good enough for a movie all focused on Prince.
