Quantum of Solace Reviews
This film just feels like an extended post credit scene for Casino Royale. It is fun to watch but not enough story to make it interesting. Still enjoy the newer Bond though.
Quantum Of Solace - 6/10. Finally, after years, I finally finished watching all of the Craig Bond films. I love Casino Royale and Skyfall. No Time To Die was good for what it was, and Spectre was meh. Quantum as well is meh, but, it attempted to be more than meh. Marc Foster is an interesting choice to be the director here. I’m a fan of his work, and he seems like a director who understands emotions well and is able to extract good drama out of emotional pain. But, he seems like an out of place choice to make a Bond film. Sam Mendes at least had a Jarhead before making Skyfall, whereas Foster was a predominantly drama based director who focused on human dramas. Here in Quantum, I did appreciate that this was a direct continuation of Casino Royale. Bond films have this tendency to always forget what happened last time and just go on a new adventure. Whereas here, we see the direct results of Bond’s pain and wallowing over the loss of the woman he loved. When the movie focuses on this loss, I think it works well. But in terms of the movie as a Bond film, its shaky. The action has spurts of fun, but for the most part, it feels a bit jarring. I did appreciate the overarching socio political element to this. The movie’s shot nicely too, giving it an edge that was necessary after Royale. But my oh my is the editing crazy and frenetic. At some points, you can blink your eyes and there were probably 3 switches within the one second. I feel like this was the weakest of the series, whereas Spectre was the biggest disappointment. To be honest, there’s nothing of significance that happens here. The overall story is just kinda happening with no flair or pizzaz. Also, interesting way of ending the film too! Watching this last in the series is kinda funny for me, but I’m glad I can say I watched all the Craig films now. Okay at best.
That took a backfire
Craig's worst movie as agent 007
Pretty good movie with the 2nd outing of Bond. A little closure on the desth of Vesper Lynd.
Picking up directly from Casino Royale but largely failing to maintain the same levels of finesse and excitement, Quantum of Solace is an uninspired, if watchable, installment in the Bond franchise.
Better than Spectre by a mile but still the 2nd weakest Craig-Bond film, Quantum of Solace has solid action and a few great performances, but some poor editing and a script that rushes through the plot at breakneck speed.
Utterly lacks imagination.
I'll give it this, in the hall of subpar 007 movies it has unique reasons why it qualifies. It's not tounge in cheek too much, bloated feeling, constant one liners, or ridiculous over the top action. It maintains the grit of the first one. This starts out really strong with Paul Greengrass like action scenes that are really good. the momentum of the first one carries over to this one very strong like it was shot out of a cannon. The action is really good. But this has a problem of all the action is front loaded in the first 20 minutes or so. Than the next hour plus is uncovering an extremely convuluted conspiracy that just gets more and more hard to follow and suprisingly boring. Yeah, this gets really boring after that opening. The acting, cinematography, music all just are passable. The editing and pacing are subpar here. And this gets a major strike for having a plot that is so difficult to follow despite being a simple premise which Mission Impossible Rouge Nation & Fallout did WAY better. The villian is forgettable, the new bond girl is forgettable, and Craig's physical acting is great but everything else is just alright. The direction isn't bad but the scenes themselves make no sense half the time or are very hard to follow. By the end I was sincerely lost with what was going on because of how bored I was and how difficult it is to follow. Something about the organization woring with a renewable energy tycoon for water with the military or something, I don't know. Skip This. Terrible dissappointment after the masterpiece of the previous.
Quantum of Solace holds up well as a transition story between Casino Royale and the three film arc that begins with Skyfall. It concludes the Veper storyline from the first film, and it builds significantly on Daniel Craig’s intense and brooding portrayal of James Bond. The film begins where Casino ends with a brilliantly designed opening sequence. The title of the film is borrowed from a short story by Ian Fleming that contributes nothing else to this film but the title. That said, Quantum is an intense film with some excellent characters, drama, and explosive action. Judi Dench turns in a stellar performance as M, and Gemma Arterton is a delight as agent Strawberry Fields. Mathieu Amalric is menacing and memorable Dominic Greene. In Craig’s first two Bond films think of Casino Royale as the glamor and Quantum of Solace as the grit. It continues Bond’s evolution towards Fleming’s hard-edged spy, both capable and fallible. Quantum is a right of passage for Bond. There is little solace for the character after such a devastating loss, but it is just enough to complete his evolution as 007 and lead him inevitably to his ultimate enemy: Spectre. The film is dark and violent, and Daniel Craig is excellent.
Yeah, well, Quantum of Solace is the first (and possibly last) Bond movie which is actually a direct sequel to the one that went before. Casino Royale redefined Bond for the modern age, making it grittier and darker (and dare I say more realistic?). It had a very different narrative structure, delighting some and enraging others who still pined for more gadgets and tongue-in-cheek action. Well, Quantum picks up where Casino leaves off... literally. Less than an hour has passed between films and QoS is effectively the continuation of the story. It tries its best to be `self-contained' and you certainly can watch it without watching Casino Royale first (but I would recommend that you don't). And it's all good stuff. If follows the style of Casino Royale closely and most should be satisfied. However, whereas Casino Royale was met with pretty much universal praise, Quantum was labelled with phrases like `Taking its foot off the pedal.' Casino Royale had an epic feel to it, whereas Quantum holds the - debateable - title of `shortest ever James Bond film.' Therefore it feels less like a film in its own right and more like an afterthought for Casino Royale. It's a good spy thriller and, if you're a fan of the `new style' James Bond that Daniel Craig is taking the franchise, then you'll probably like it too. However, Casino Royale was a tough act to follow and QoS doesn't really live up to it. Luckily, reviewing this after seeing its successor - Skyfall - it's only a temporary set-back. Skyfall even eclipses Casino Royale.
This Bond film is truly groundbreaking for multiple reasons: the most poorly edited action sequences ever, the worst opening title song ever (never mind that the rejected theme song is one of the best ever, Eva Almer’s “Forever — I Am All Yours”), and the absence of the James Bond action music until, get this, the credits roll at the end of the film!Beyond shocking after the brilliance of “Casino Royale.” Don’t ever let this director anywhere near another Bond film.
Good, don't know why 3 stars is considered bad by this rating system. It's good move. 6.4/10.
Quality filming and intriguing locales.
A less than brilliant follow up to Bond's incredible return to the screen.
"Quantum of Solace" works as a generic action flick, but not as one belonging to the 007 franchise. While Craig is still great, the weak villain and messy plot makes it struggle to work as the sequel to the brilliant "Casino Royale".
Quantum of Solace while having a good storyline turns out to be a forgettable venture. It doesn't have beautiful locations, stylized action and all the things which make any film a bond film.
After 16 years I'm getting fond of the movie, I don't think anymore that is boring.
Strengths: Daniel Craig's Continued Excellence: Critics agree that Craig remains a compelling Bond, portraying a raw and vengeful agent fueled by grief. His physicality and intensity are captivating. Action Sequences: The film boasts impressive action choreography and editing, creating a relentless pace and thrilling set pieces. The shaky-cam style, however, may be disorienting for some viewers. Gritty Continuation: "Quantum of Solace" directly follows the emotional fallout of "Casino Royale," offering a darker and more serious Bond experience. Weaknesses: Plot Complexity: The plot, particularly the machinations of the villainous organization Quantum, can be convoluted and difficult to follow, especially for those unfamiliar with "Casino Royale." Emotional Depth Lacks Nuance: While the film explores Bond's grief, some critics find it underdeveloped and overshadowing other character development. Missing Classic Bond Elements: The gadgets, humor, and signature Bond tropes are largely absent, disappointing fans who enjoy those aspects of the franchise. Short Runtime: The film's brevity, while keeping the action tight, can leave some viewers feeling the story is underdeveloped. Overall: "Quantum of Solace" is a visually stylish and action-packed Bond film. However, its reliance on the previous film's emotional arc and a complex, fast-paced plot can leave some viewers cold. It's a film that rewards those familiar with the Craig-era Bond's continuity but might not be the best entry point for newcomers to the franchise. Ratting:2.5
