Quiz Lady Reviews
It's right to say this is uneven. Some of the jokes don't land. But, and this is a big but, Awkwafina and the wonderful Sandra Oh are delicious as the two sisters trying to raise money to pay off a debt. The chemistry is superb and really makes the film worth watching.
This conventional comedy rides on the strength of its 2 excellent protagonists, Akwafina and Sandra Oh, and some competent supporting cast, led by Will Ferrell (except for the obnoxious part of one of the quiz shows contestants - just too over the top). Definitely worth a watch!
Hilarious and well paced from beginning to end. All of the characters (definitely including Mr. Linguini) are unique and well formed.
How does Sandra Oh look soooo young here and old in grays? I laughed so much during this movie!!!
Although it was predictable and bit off other tropes and themes, I didn't mind it at all. The leads were very good at what they did. They were playing homage and satirizing game show movies, and the game shows themselves. I sometimes forget that when Will Ferrell isn't trying to be funny or silly he's a really good actor. He did the Alex Trebek/Alan Ludden character to a tee without a bit of 'hey watch me play this character' like Ben Stiller does. What I also liked about it was the number of people it put to work and the credit they gave them at the end. Who puts the individual orchestra members' names in the credits? Noone. It was a treat to watch. Of course, I watched the last 35 minutes again right after the film ended. It was just that good. My god, how long was this film sitting in the cans before it was released. Was there a problem with the music rights? Did it have to be re-edited for length or some other crazy excuse? Was Trebek's estate a problem" Was Rubens estate a problem? I don't know but I am glad it was all settled. This was a gem. Not a perfect diamond, but certainly an opal to speak about.
this movie is hilarious
This movie was pretty boring and lacking in comedy
Not very substantial and seemed like it was trying to be funnier than it was. Awkwafina was good.
What a funny concept for a movie. I'd love to see more original comedy ideas out of Hollywood.
Loved the movie. Funny cute journey of two sisters getting their dog back. Solid 8.5/10
This was great quiz movie ever made in making a development of being a fan of quiz games and about to come true. Good movie!!
This is a great straight to streaming movie. The plot was simple and quirky and the casting was great.
I would have done 5 stars but the one thing missing is Bobby Lee
We were laughing the whole time! The movie was so good we cried while we are laughing! Two thumbs up!
Quiz Lady Quiz Lady tells the story of estranged sisters that go on a quiz show to save their dog, after a moblord abducts the dog because of unpaid debts by their runaway mother. This movie thrives on the undeniable chemistry between its leads. Awkwafina, renowned for her exaggerated comedic style, brings a refreshing touch to her role as a laid-back, reclusive game show whiz. Conversely, Sandra Oh, typically known for her calm, dramatic performances, shines as an effervescent and free-spirited character, delivering a breathtaking portrayal. The delightful switch in the leads' usual roles adds to the enjoyment of the film. The sister duo brings heart and sisterly warmth to this movie, especially Sandra Oh's character. The comedy isn't always spot-on but for most parts it's good. The story isn't grand or special and during the first half I felt it may amount to nothing but by the time the end credits rolled I found the entire movie to be well worth my time and honestly wanting more from the sister duo. There are some silly and eye-roll-inducing moments but given the movie's style, these are forgivable. Once again, Sandra Oh is just brilliant in this movie and I want to see her in more comedic roles. 6.5-7/10
It's a cute weekend movie if you're not looking to get into anything too serious and want one of those chill but dumb 'out with your friends' kind of laughs. The writing is enjoyable, relatable, and palatable. This movie is like mac and cheese but not mac and cheese with the baked breadcrumbs on top if you know what I mean.
This movie is hilarious and a breath of fresh air. Sandra Oh is incredibly funny, I love her performance. The chemistry between the Sandra and Awkwafina is amazing. The storyline isn't too intense; it's light and stress-free.
Quiz Lady is sweet, funny and so very much enjoyable. A perfect movie for a night on the couch. It tells the story of two sisters, who are certainly very much opposite types. Anne, the younger one, is a diligent person. She lives a staid life, but is very thorough and responsible. From a young age she is obsessed with the game show 'Can't Stop the Quiz'. Her older sister Jenny is a mess. No job and totally chaotic. When their gambling addicted mother flees the country, her loan shark comes to the sisters looking for the debt to be repayed. As Anne is incredibly good at answering the quiz questions, Jenny suggests Anne should go on the show to win some large amounts of money. This film is very light on its feet and also very funny. Thanks to very winning performances from Sandra Oh and Awkwafina as the sisters. Their chemistry is great and the jokes are very well written. As such this is a very easy film to like.
QUIZ LADY is funny from start to finish, embracing an understated approach that allows its non-stop subtle comedic moments to shine. Add this to the list with Joy Ride as another recent top-shelf Asian-centric comedy that pushes the envelope a bit while skillfully balancing the heartfelt and the hilarious.
