Race Reviews

While the real-life story of Jesse Owens is spectacular and absolutely film worthy, Race doesn’t quite have enough working in it’s favor to finish on a strong note. It starts off the starting line fast, stumbles early on and isn’t ever able to recover.

Just when I was beginning to lose hope when it comes to Hollywood's disturbing penchant for seeing black characters as victims, Race comes along.

Race is a long overdue film about Jesse Owens with excellent performances and a thoughtful portrayal of documentarian/propagandist Leni Riefenstahl.

Race concerns Jesse Owens the barrier-breaking Olympian. An incredible story, well told.

| Sep 29, 2021

A quality sports biopic centred on the life, times and legacy of one of the greatest sprinters of all time, the legitimately legendary Jesse Owens.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Sep 10, 2021

A more profound and historically insightful film than Race would have found a truthful way to deal with the contradictions and concrete social obstacles that reality, not mythology, presents.

| Feb 12, 2021

Ultimately "Race" isn't really about race or, specifically racing. It's about sportsmanship and the ability of sports to cut through personal prejudices of all sorts.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Feb 3, 2021

Race is a perfectly entertaining biopic which - despite its loftier goals - ends up being movie-by-numbers.

If you're looking for insight into what made Jesse Owens tick, you won't find much of that in Race. But in its own straightforward way, the film still manages to be contemplative, educational and inspiring, and you'll be glad you saw it.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Jan 23, 2020

A solidly executed biopic that crosses the finish line a winner.

| Nov 5, 2019

The story itself so deserves to be told and seen, that transgressions by director Stephen Hopkins and writers Anna Waterhouse and Joe Shrapnel can nearly be forgiven.

| Original Score: C+ | Oct 17, 2019

From a historical standpoint, this film tells a great story. What happened to Jesse Owens has all the drama and emotion you could ever want. But it doesn't deliver the emotional punch of a Rocky.

With the Screenwriters attempt to capture everything and please all parties, the film ends up being superficial, especially in the basics of the film: Its main character. [Full Review in Spanish]

Overall, it's an inspiring story that's pretty well told.

| Original Score: B | Apr 15, 2019

If anything, "Race" is a bit too long for a film of its nature and it could have included more of Owens' personal life, but the anchoring coach/athlete relationship and the performances by James, Sudeikis, and the great supporting cast ground the film.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Apr 5, 2019

While it is a bit uneven in spots, the overall effect is an engaging, compelling story that certainly warrants telling to a new generation.

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Feb 20, 2019

an amazing story

| Aug 27, 2018

Race feels like a lustrous after-school special, suffering from an uninspired treatment that favours a cozy, glossy look over gritty authenticity.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Mar 21, 2018

Missing completely in the picture is an examination of the commitment and the determination that made Owens such an extraordinary athlete. We learn nothing about his inner essence; all we learn about him is that he can run faster than anyone else.

| Jan 10, 2018

It may be overwritten and a rocky ride with very little visual flair from its director, but drawing attention to Jesse Owens is only a good thing. Besides, you also get to watch Hitler act a sore loser
