Rachel Getting Married Reviews

Sep 1, 2024

Maybe I just didn't get it, but I was expecting a lot more from this. It's a tough arc and story to pull off in such a small window and I was left empty by the story and emotional payoffs.

This is one of the worst if not the worst movie I've ever had the misfortune of watching. It could be Jonathan Demme is a gifted misanthrope but it's more likely with this film he proves himself to be as incompetent as he was gifted when he directed his best two films Miami Blues and The Silence of the Lambs and those were directed almost 25 years ago.

I normally don't review films but this was so bad that it cannot be left unsaid. While the performances were good, there was virtually no plot, wedding and pre-wedding scenes dragged on for excruciatingly too long, and most of the interpersonal dynamics were painfully contrived. Pure drivel.

Unusual sensation: through most of the movie I was bothered by the rythm of the movie, by the "documentary", almost "found footage" style of naturalistic story telling, but it ended with my feeling a familiarity, as if I'd watched a true-life family crisis. Also, only towards the end did I start caring about the protagonists. I thought that at times the acting was over-zealous, not as naturalistic as the director, famous Jonathan Demme, may have wanted.

A performances delight, with a simple but powerful story, this family drama shows us the sorrow and the joy around a celebration.

Drama around a family wedding.

One of the best dysfunctional family movies ever and easily Anne Hathaway's best performance. Demme makes the unusual but ultimately affecting decision to let scenes run much longer than normal, allowing us to share the discomfort and claustrophobia of what the characters often feel. This is sincere, truthful, unapologetic filmmaking, sometimes almost uncomfortable to watch. Hathaway and Debra Winger, as her mother, have one particular scene of startling intensity and truth telling that is truly electrifying.

I would easily comprehend anyone who informs me they could not watch this film because it may hit the ball too close to home. Substance abuse is a problem that has infiltrated the lives of a lot of American families. Watching a film like Rachel Getting Married may only serve as a reminder of the harsh reality we face in our real lives. The movie takes place over one weekend in which Kym leaves the rehabilitation center to visit her father's house for her sister's wedding. Her family is cautious about Kym's progress as a recovering addict. Will she fit in well with the wedding guests, or will she be an outcast who draws selfishly needed attention upon herself?

Anne Hathaway is phenomenal in this movie! Although it plays out like a family drama, it is also hilarity and depth at the same time.

The best acting performance from Rosemarie DeWitt!

Seen two separate works unexpectedly from one director, a fact found upon seeing another of his work that's praised as his return to form which defines commonly themed as humanely aimed, and the focus is definitely wholesome with the narrative over aesthetical cinematography. This family drama's terrifically routine in the fragile bonds still in sensitively need of healing amidst character study that finely unfolds and empathetically felt through strong performances, further realizing what director Jonathan Demme's truly pursue like this being a definitively realized sample alongside a serious showcase for Anne Hathaway. (B+)

Overall, it lays it on pretty thick, but it's a very good slice of life story with good character revelations along the way. The excellent ensemble cast are sweet and sincere and Anne Hathaway's lead character is very layered and feels very real.

This movie made me want to throw up.

Unbalanced and unmoving. Many irrelevant scenes that drag on for far too long and important scenes cut short. The movie puts you straight into a family weekend with no context and piecing together information takes away from building connection with the characters. A good story with bad execution. Overall would not recommend this movie to anyone.

If you can get past the dizzying, nausea-inducing cinematography, there are things of value to be found in Rachel Getting Married, a seemingly odd offering from director Jonathan Demme. Kym (Anne Hathaway) suffers from addiction issues, issues that led to the death of her younger brother. Released from rehab to attend her sister's wedding, she is forced to come to terms with her past and deal with simmering family tensions. The film is filled with dialogue and scenarios that feel real, but Hathaway steals the show in an absolutely electric performance in bringing her character to life. Unfortunately, the film's strength is also, strangely, its weakness, as Hathaway's character is so repugnantly narcissistic it is difficult to watch, let alone appreciate. The movie is also hampered by a bloated running time thanks to a handful of scenes that run painfully long (the rehearsal dinner, for one).

A sometimes crushing movie that is great because of how realistic and flawed all of these people feel. This takes you on a wild emotional journey and Anne Hathaway is phenomenal here. I do think the third act of the wedding is kind of weak though.

This film's lack of a more traditional 3-part structure is beneficial to the seemingly spontaneous interactions between these relatable but damaged characters. Hathaway's benchmark performance is here.

I love Anne Hathaway, but watching her force a few tears and light a cigarette every five minutes is far from giving a realistic performance as a drug addict guilty of the death of a younger sibling. Melodrama runs high. The ring of truth does not. It's this imbalance and increasing sense of contrivance--not grit and emotional depth--that makes this wedding weekend tough to watch.

2.2. This is one of those movies where all of the acting is solid but the movie just never resonated with me

One of my personal favorites. But it needed another draft, the present script is uneven and some scenes could have been trimmed or altered to fit the film's tone. Definitely some of the best use of music in a movie.
