Rampart Reviews

Feb 14, 2025

A very different style of directing & camerawork. This has thrown people off since they are so used to the standard Hollywood style. Very unnerving & brilliantly played. Not something that can be fully absorbed with just one viewing. The ending to it is that there is no ending with this sort of person, just a gradual horrifying decline.

Great acting, fantastic sets, no plot at all, movie is about 40 minutes too long.

I can see why critics would love it. It’s uniquely complex on every level from family to his cop related entanglements with no phony good guy, uplifting theme or redemption to be had. But my God it’s long, a series of unpleasant interactions punctuated with violence with nothing to show for it at the end except perhaps reality I suppose or at least the critics thought that. For movie watchers it’s more a test of will to see if you can get through a marathon of dysfunction and people constantly on defense with not an aspiration to be found anywhere. Particularly annoying is the fixation on smoking. Another reality I suppose but so distractingly annoying via repetition.

A movie about a bad corrupt cop recognizing he is a bad person and must reconcile with himself and his family and thats the story folks.......possibly the worst cop movie that you will see that is hold together by the great actor that is Woody Harrelson.

"Rampart" is a gritty, intense drama set against the backdrop of the Rampart scandal in the LAPD during the late 1990s. The film delves deep into the life of Dave Brown, a corrupt and brutal cop struggling with his own demons and the systemic corruption around him. “Rampart” is a complex, thought-provoking film that challenges viewers to confront uncomfortable truths about morality, corruption, and the human condition. Its strength lies in its nuanced portrayal of a deeply flawed protagonist and the unforgiving world he navigates.

Similar to Bad Lieutenant, an unlikable but amusing character trapped in a mess of police corruption revolving around him and his life as it swirls around the drain. Gets repetitive, whether you think he is right or wrong... and by the end you don't care.

One of the worst movies I've ever seen in my 38 years of life. I wish I could rewind time and stab myself instead of watch this.

An absolute waste of film,,time!

I love Woody Harelson but this movie is awful. I tried giving it a chance and watching the entire movie. It only gets worse as the movie progresses.

Woody can play his alter ego as well as himself here, with L.A. street experience, that's made him both the best & the worst.

A movie that is more emotionally complex than most police/crime dramas. Harrelson is excellent as the self tortured LA cop. No big shootouts or car chases, but just a good story. Great support from the rest of the cast. Well worth watching especially on a streaming platform.

Atmospheric cop drama that sees old-school cop Woody Harrelson (excellent performance) accused of police brutality. The movie depicts the impact this has on him and his family, and has become topical again with the trials against the cops in the George Floyd case. Great cast which also includes Sigourney Weaver, Brie Larson, Anne Heche, Cynthia Nixon, Ice Cube, Robin Wright, and Steve Buscemi. Not sure why it has so many bad reviews, other then that the end is a bit flimsy. I would definitely recommend it though, but keep in mind that it's not a thriller or an action movie, but more a slow-paced, atmospheric cop drama.

Woody is a complicated cop that serves a hard side of town - but he starts to get himself in trouble with his cavalier ways. More of a character study than a story.

Although it has a stellar cast. The director seems to make all of the wrong choices. Not to mention this movie is so dark in terms of lighting that feels like a vampire flick. This is storytelling at its worst.

The acting was great but and everyone did so well but the way the plot jumped around had me lost from time to time. Even though the acting was great we didn't get to spend a lot of time with supporting characters. Even though this movie felt long I feel as tho it should have been longer and then it might feel more cohesive

Rompart: to sleep with a girl (especially if it is a highschool girl), then never see her, or make contact with her ever again.

The longer it went on the less I cared - I don't know what the hell was going on plotwise because nothing was going on. Two hours with a bastard going nowhere.

Rampart is an engaging and intelligent film. If I had seen it sooner it would have been on my Best Films of 2012 List

Woody Harrelson is great in this movie, and he is surrounded by a great cast. But the film felt somewhat contrived and forced at times.

This was directed by Oren Moverman, whose directorial debut was "The Messenger" (2009) where he was nominated for an Oscar for screenplay; and also starred Woody Harrelson. "Rampart" isn't quite as gripping...but it's still hard to look away. Harrelson plays a sleazy LA cop who's juggling more than he can handle. I was actually rooting for him because he pulls more tail than a special needs kid at a petting zoo.
