Rebel Ridge Reviews
As a cathartic high-octane revenge thriller, it is limp. As a character study, it is too tetchily schematic to offer more than ambling pleasures and as a cog in the wheel of law enforcement on screen it sounds a desultory conforming cry

If you are looking for a simple revenge film, Rebel Ridge is not the right tree to bark up. Smartly, it never allows us the stock happy endings we crave.

A fun, action packed and, yes, touching thriller with a standout performance from Aaron Pierre as Terry, a black man confronted by a sea of racist, small town cops as he tries to free his cousin and smash the corrupt stranglehold the law has on that town.

Like him, the movie will knock you out; unlike him, it’ll be in a good way.

The year’s biggest birth of a movie star came from [Aaron] Pierre in Jeremy Saulnier’s brilliantly taut Rebel Ridge.

This is a superlative thriller. One that proves Saulnier is one of our finest voices of iconoclastic cinema. He plays in familiar genre playgrounds, yet always comes out with something new and interesting to say.
| Original Score: 5/5 | Jan 1, 2025
You won’t find many 131-minute action thrillers paced better than Saulnier’s latest banger. The writer/director shoots action scenes that aren’t dizzying yet enthralling, and he knows how to add a little grit to the direction.

As elementally satisfying as a great Western.
| Original Score: A- | Dec 12, 2024
Equal parts suspense thriller gathering evidence and action film relying on close-up combat that never threatens deadly force until the finale, Saulnier is always moving us forward with high stakes scenarios that cannot be subdued without a fight.

Calling Terry Richmond a thinking man’s John Rambo is apt.

Jeremy Saulnier writes and directs this thriller that combines expertly staged action scenes with an intricate plot around police violence and racism in the United States. [Full review in Spanish]

Hot damn is this thing cathartic...
| Original Score: 3/4 | Nov 6, 2024
An entertaining crime drama.
| Original Score: B- | Oct 19, 2024
“Rebel Ridge” isn’t up there with Saulnier’s earlier films but it’s still something rare in the commercial movie landscape: A work of pure professionalism behind the camera and in front of it.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Oct 18, 2024
Rebel Ridge could have been a brainless genre-flick with not much on its mind except stunts and ratings. But Saulnier wrote an intelligent and darkly funny script, and then put together a terrific cast to bring it to life.

Morally on point, packed with powerful performances, and with more than a little to say about contemporary prejudice – Rebel Ridge deserved a cinema release.

Just another forgettable entry in a long line of mid-level thrillers about corrupt law enforcement.

Pierre...is tremendous. Announces himself immediately as he sweatily, muscly, forcibly punctuates every scene, as formidable and imposing a presence on screen as he is star-makingly handsome

This is a taut action thriller that is extremely well done. At the half-way point it gets a bit bogged down with a political conspiracy that hurts a film a little. But in terms of an action flick, this is absolutely top notch.
| Original Score: 8.5/10 | Sep 28, 2024
Slow-burning yet satisfying action/thriller, reminiscent of Tom Laughlin's 'Billy Jack' (1971) and Ted Kotcheff's 'First Blood' (1982), introducing Sylvester Stallone's John Rambo.
