Red Hill Reviews

Feb 16, 2025

Pretty good movie and I like that Jimmy is able to get his justice his way. The ending is saddening but makes sense, the only thing that really irritated me was that Jimmy (Tom E Lewis) let Cooper (Ryan Kwanten) live multiple times and the little twerp still couldn't put two and two together until it was spelt out for him. Literally. He read a sworn statement and decided to use his little braincells, bless.

Not a terrible movie, quite enjoyable watch for a Sunday afternoon. What really annoyed me was that no one was capable of doing anything quietly! The bad guy could have been disposed of early on if people didn't fall over, trip over, knock stuff over, or just groan.

a b-movie with no real known actors and with a slow pacing and bad acting

Ludicrous direction and ridden with nonsense situations. Don't waste your time..

Great film. Hasn't dated. Kwanten and Bisley both put in strong performances. Lewis was fantastic as the revengeful murderer, out to settle a score, with his one line of dialogue in the final minutes lending his character a Terminator type quality. It was well paced, but had moments of clichéd Wild West elements that didn't quite work. I'd still recommend it though.

The Australian western / thriller "Red Hill" is so loaded with clichés, at first I thought it was a satire: 1) A new, idealistic young cop (with a beautiful pregnant wife) comes to a small town and has to deal with the grizzled old sheriff, who is not afraid to bend the rules to implement his own vigilantism. 2) An escaped convict returns to the town to kill everybody who testified against him. 3) Lots of horses. 4) Lots of grisly violence. 5) Lots more horses. 6) Lots more violence. It's pure action, with virtually no character development. But the production values and acting are actually quite good. Ryan Kwanten plays Shane, the new cop in town. Steve Bisley devours the scenery as Old Bill the police chief (a poke at the British?), who has an agenda that doesn't become clear until the final act. The convict, Jimmy, is played by Tommy Lewis, with his face half-scarred by burns (we don't find out why until the last minutes of the film). He is totally mute until the end, when he says a final few words. All three performances are good enough to make you forgive the clichés and follow the story, thin as it may be. This may also be the first movie to feature a murder using a boomerang. I ultimately decided that there was a bit of a satirical element here, but the movie plays it straight for the most part. Not that there isn't any story (and backstory); there's just not a lot to it. But action fans will be impressed.

Fantastically tense. A likeable protagonist who gets thrown in the deep end. The filmmakers walk a tightrope and manage to turn things around by the end of the film. The alternate ending from the dvd version is superior to the cinematic ending, which is why I didn't give it the full 5.

A cheap horror movie with expensive cinematography, laced with social justice themes. An Aboriginal villain with super human powers (Bullet Proof? Invisible?) terrorizes a group of incompetent Australian cops who are either unable or unwilling to 'Serve and Protect', the worst case being the pacifist lead character. The film maker has a social and political 'axe to grind' with a delivery of the commentary that is heavy handed, garish, inappropriate and insulting.

About 20 minutes in every Australian movie I always think to myself I really wish this was on Netflix with subtitles . The new cop was pretty dumb and naive and it bothered me but I understand the intentions . I was interesting to learn that Australia does in fact have westerns . I liked this movie, didn’t love it . 3.1 . The comedic undertones of the movie is what kept it fresh for me

You may think that this Australian neo western is just a popcorn movie, but it actually has a little more heart than you may think, as well as a tiny bit of satire on the mistreat of Aborigines over the centuries. But overall, it's still a bloody shoot-em-up revenge western, with some of the death scenes being over acted, which is just very cringe worthy, and some scenes are just tedious, and the editing isn't spectacular. But Ryan Kwanten is good in the lead, and the flick is surprisingly well shot. But something just tells me that this flick ain't what it could've been. Overall, it's not the best western I've ever seen, but it's descent gory fun for the most part. Recommended !!

Fast-paced Australian thriller.

A fine example of how to make a more-than-just-acceptable thriller in a culture over-saturated by content. Patrick Hughes is a fine artist with a bright future.

This film is an intense thiller which has a fantastic first third, the other two thirds, are still interesting and gripping, however they didn't have the same level of brilliance. Jack.

Beautifully shot, showing off Australia's wonderful landscape. Fantastic score by Dmitri Golovko gives this Aussie western attempt a neat pace, with Kwanten strong as the hero.

This movie didn't really go anywhere for me. Felt too clichéd; small town out in the wops with a dark secret due to their backwards ways. Nothing much new here. Ryan Kwanten is lovely to stare at though.

A person can only suspend so much disbelief.

Old fashioned, taut, enjoyable.

The real victim was me for watching it all the way through.

Red Hill is well shot and at times entertaining but it feels like more of a horror film than a western

(64%) A very well shot and entertaining Aussie modern-day western horror. The performances are solid, especially Steve Bisley on fine form, and the movie has some heart to go with the action. And even if the plot is a little old hat and been done before, this is still a very worthy watch.
