Red Lights Reviews

The fact that Red Lights' action doesn't operate in a recognizable universe, however, is a constant problem.

| Original Score: 6.1/10 | Aug 16, 2012

A clever thriller, bolstered by three great performances.

| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Aug 10, 2012

The film doesn't offer the sense of release, or of surprise, that it seems to take for granted.

"The X-Files" is long gone. Hail and farewell. But its spirit lives on in "Red Lights." Hail, hail.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Aug 9, 2012

By strict definition, any movie featuring Robert De Niro as a spoon-bending clairvoyant superstar ought to hold a few cards up its sleeve.

| Original Score: 2/4 | Aug 2, 2012

It's nonsense on a plot level but played seriously without nearly enough personality or edge. Even the film's undeniably talented cast can't save it.

| Original Score: 2.0/5.0 | Aug 2, 2012

A lot of talent comes up empty in "Red Lights," a thriller that doesn't thrill.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Aug 2, 2012

Cortes made "Buried," which means he has more good work to offer. Better luck next film.

For its first two acts, the movie had me in its grip. Then it comes apart.

| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Jul 25, 2012

Red Lights culminates with a twist ending that doesn't just change everything that came previously, it actually negates the entirety of the film.

| Jul 16, 2012

One of the most preposterous and incoherent films of 2012...

| Original Score: 1/4 | Jul 13, 2012

It's not so much the narrative sleight-of-hand that is irksome, as the implication that there may have been a better movie lurking in there the whole time.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Jul 13, 2012

That all the good things--and there are several--Red Lights has going for it are ultimately in service of an ending that might even make M. Night Shyamalan cringe represents one of the year's biggest missed opportunities.

| Original Score: 1.5/4 | Jul 12, 2012

Someone should have stopped Red Lights.

| Original Score: 2/4 | Jul 12, 2012

They should have known that a levitating De Niro was simply a séance too far.

Cortes continues to challenge magical thinking, but ultimately submits to it. The only mystery is which of the characters will turn the screw of the twist ending.

| Jul 12, 2012

I'm pretty sure that "Red Lights" is a fascinating failure -- and possibly an oddball cult film in-the-making -- but a failure none-the-less.

Fans of all-star catastrophes are advised to see it early and often.

| Jul 12, 2012

It loses momentum and the sense of the unexpected that gave it fuel. Its most operatic moments are actually its weakest.

| Original Score: 6/10 | Jul 12, 2012

Red Lights goes astray on so many levels that I gave up trying to figure it out before the end of the second reel.
