Rent-a-Pal Reviews

Oct 14, 2024

Weird, unique, crazy, creepy, and unsettling. If you want to watch a different kind of '80s horror...this is it.

A unique, well acted musing on obsession only fails because it felt like it could have done more with its unsettling premise.

Um bom roteiro, boa interpretação, só acho que peca um pouco na edição e definitivamente não deveria ser colocado como um filme de terror e sim um drama ou suspense.

I recommend this movie to everyone I really liked it. I thought it was different which is rare nowadays.

I thought this movie was amazingly well done. It really showed the build up of resentment and complexity in a care giver/relative dynamic, and the snap a mind can experience due to loneliness and isolation. The lead actor played the part so well - had me in tears for David in the first half of the film with the unfairness of his situation and being such a lovely guy. Wil Wheaton was so good as well - genius casting as he comes across as a friendly pal type of guy, but he snapped into creepy mode so well in this movie. I was expecting a standard "demon/ghost in the video tape" type horror, but instead was pleasantly surprised at how unique and emotionally moving the story was.

A roller coaster of emotions. Truly driving fear into something as simple as a VHS tape.

Unique and powerful movie with an interesting study of character.

Overall, I enjoyed this film far more than I expected. It is an unpredictable thriller about a lonely man who finds friendship with another man on his television, leading to disastrous consequences. It has a plot unlike anything I have seen before and strong performances. For the most part, the film's pace is upbeat, but the film slows down dramatically by the third act. This is worth checking out today if you seek a new thriller and horror film.

A weird film, but surprisingly good.

I just made an account to save others from wasting their time on this movie. It is a depressing movie for 1.5 hours, utterly nothing to offer than him watching that film and being lonely. The last 10 minutes was the ONLY aspect that could be considered a thriller. Good acting, but it was beyond dragged out. Like the others said, could've & should've been made a short film.

Pretty damn good thriller. Really surprised me

What begins as a moving little portrait of atomization devolves into a slasher-esque sequence. Whatever fascinating thematic power the film develops in the beginning is unfortunately disposed of in favor of something far less interesting. Brian Landis-Folkins turns in an encompassing performance.

A load of rubbish, not a thriller at all!

Rent-A-Pal is a low-budget psychological horror film that drew me in with its relatively original premise. The main character is David (played sympathetically by Brain Landis Folkins), a middle aged full-time carer for his aging mother. Unlucky in love and yearning for human connection outside of the daily routine of looking after his mom, he takes part in a VHS video dating service. It is at the video dating agency that he happens upon the Rent-A-Pal VHS tape, made as a sort of virtual companion for the lonely. Initially reluctant and awkward about talking to his video "pal" (played with a mixture of charm and compelling creepiness by Wil Wheaton), the video gradually blooms into an obsession for David. It's hard not to root for David as a character, which makes witnessing his misfortune and the sadness of his life a pretty depressing experience on one level. However, there was enough going on dramatically and thematically here to maintain my interest throughout the film. The ending is also rather bleak, and I was left wondering if they could've taken it in a different direction. I would still recommend this film, both for the inventiveness of its premise and the fine performances from its cast.

Best 2020 movie !

Disturbing, fun, and amazing!

A very unique horror movie that starts off very slow but gradually gains traction and keeps you on the edge of your seat until the credits roll. I gave this 4.5 stars instead of 5 because the ending *should* have gone in a different direction based upon some subtle foreshadowing in dialogue and "hidden" messages/objects in a few shots. Still, a good ending. This will likely become one of those cult classics that people talk about for decades

This movie is very sad. You should know what you're getting yourself into
