Rich Hill Reviews

Jan 21, 2018

Incredibly moving story that had me choking up & rooting for the boys at the same time. I JUST wanted to reach through my laptop to hug them & tell them how proud they should be. People & the system simply failed them. The courage and strength of Andrew was particularly inspirational. With some love & attention I'm sure they will have happy & purposeful lives.

Here's what it's about: One kid who's dumb as a stump. One kid who is a future violent felon. One kid who is sweet and loving but deeply naive and ignorant just like his dad. No bright futures to be seen. The movie is beautifully produced but there's really not much of a story.

What it is like in rural missouri!

Although this may not be the best documentary on this subject out there, I have (for some reason) come back to this a few times. Very interesting people in this which makes for pretty good entertainment.

A wonderful film putting a piece of poverty in America under the lens. Exceptional soundtrack by Nathan Halpern (https://soundcloud.com/copticon).

In the country that boasts car elevators, gold plated bidets, diamond dog collars, and wall street offices lined with $75,000 rugs in them, that 3 good loving family boys have to fight the odds everyday of ever lifting themselves out of grinding poverty.

As sad as it is enlightening, "Rich Hill" offers viewers a sobering look into small town poverty USA. The three kids featured are all different, but the stories too often melt into one another. You need a lot of empathy to see a documentary like this, and the movie kind of stagnates in the middle, but it's well worth the watch. It's important we never turn a blind eye to what's happening in our own country and this movies attempts to show us a harsh reality.

Very well shot, but I found the subject matter quite one-note and overly dark.

As extraordinary as it is captured, I felt that it builds up and leads to nothing. Great cinematography and genuine emotions are shown on screen, but maybe a diferente editing would change it from a good documentary to a memorable one.

a heart--wrenching and captivating look into the lives of several families and their struggles to deal with poverty, mental illness and social stigma that exposes the dark underbelly of the American capitalist machine.

I feel for the kids in the movie because they have no role models. The parents in this are despicable. Poor does not dictate filth, laziness does. I grew up poor (food stamps, free school lunches, etc.) but we did not live in filth.

possibly one of the saddest, most depressing but also most real movies I've ever watched. the people in this film are just a micro glimpse of how many others, struggling to grow up and make it in this world. My heart gurts for all of them...I can only hope that in the end life becomes better for them.

This polished documentary is little more than cultural tourism. Read my review at movie-op.blogspot.com.

As someone who works with the adolescents of their geographic area and SES, this portrait feels very accurate and honest. Very moving and challenges generalizations about rural, troubled youth.

awesome documentary - a 10

You really feel for these kids and get a better sense of how others have it. How folks "like us" live. I stumbled upon this on Netflix and researched more about the families after seeing the documentary.

Masterful documentary filmmaking that explores human stories of real people in search of acceptance. Judgement is simply falsely entitled ignorance put into practice without any understanding or compassion, and that fact is propped up and put on display with no frills or romance. This is honest and real, and your heart breaks for them. This is a special film. It's incredible.
