Ricky Gervais: SuperNature Reviews

Everyone knows Gervais does these sorts of bits, so there’s no surprise factor in SuperNature. I hate to alarm Gervais, of whom I am a fan, but it’s possible that this new hour of standup won’t cause any protests.

Gervais reflects upon and provokes to gift us a collection of the best jokes in these times of overplayed [political] correctness. [Full review in Spanish]

The guy is just an achingly conventional millennial posing as a naughty maverick.

| Jun 9, 2022

There’s plenty to be offended by if you don’t see what the joke really is -- or its target -- but he’s an equal opportunities offender, at least.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Jun 9, 2022

[Gervais] takes on the hot potato du jour – transgender identity – and proves himself an agile and intelligent commentator, as well as a bloody funny one...The outcry against him sounds like the death knell of cancel culture – or at least the first toll.

It baffles why Gervais, a man who is clearly very smart, loves animals, has professed support for vulnerable communities and has condemned racism, homophobia and misogyny, continues to traffic in exactly that in the name of comedy.

Gervais is truly off-putting in SuperNature, a detestable combination of smug and obtuse.

| Original Score: 1.5/10 | Jun 1, 2022

While the jokes can be utterly savage, what comes after the punchline is often quite poignant.

| Original Score: 4/5 | May 31, 2022

I don’t mean to sound disillusioned but there really has to be more to comedy than wealthy, overgrown men defending each other’s freedom to offend while also being terribly unfunny.

| May 31, 2022

It's possible to be funny on just about any topic imaginable; Gervais's sexist and anti-trans jokes just aren't.

| May 27, 2022

Watching Ricky Gervais’ new Netflix standup special—SuperNature—is like watching the climactic rap battle in 8 Mile. Every accusation you want to hurl at the comedian, he hurls at himself first.

| May 27, 2022

If trans people are to be thrown to the wolves of comedy, one would hope the wolves would at least be funnier.

| May 26, 2022

The problem with SuperNature, as with much comedy these days, progressive or irreverent, is that it finds itself sucked into the self-referential death spiral of the culture wars.

| Original Score: 2/5 | May 25, 2022

Gervais warned us with his introduction to the stage as “a man who really doesn’t need to do this.” And he was right. He didn’t need to do this hour. And you don’t need to watch it, either.

| May 25, 2022

It's not particularly complicated to see why Gervais is so fascinated by trans people and social media criticism directed at anti-LGBTQ comedians. He doesn’t really have anything else to talk about, a pathetic display of artistic laziness.

| May 24, 2022

None of this is offensive – that’s not my problem. It’s just too easy for a man of Gervais’s once-obvious talents.
