Ripley's Game Reviews

Aug 25, 2024

Highly recommended. The role is just right for Malkovich; diesarmingly amoral and utterly self-confident. as he was in Dangerous Liaisons.

I liked this movie, good scenes from Europe and, a good storyline and John Malkovich is always good. Be sure to watch it to the end, it may get a little slow in the middle but follow it to the end

Interesting well-worked movie.

The acting is good, but I just don't get the appeal of this series.

Expected more. Malkovich was great, but felt slow and not engaging.

"Ripley's Game" 3.5 stars. This movie is 20 years old. I probably passed on it the first time around, probably because at the time I wasn't much of a John Malkovich fan. Boy, did I cheat myself. This has been my only exposure to the "Ripley" series by Patricia Highsmith. What an interesting character is Ripley. A combination of a social elite and a hit-man that posses no conscious, but has a soul. I thought Mr Malkovich did an excellent job portraying such a complicated character. The supporting cast was also very good, especially Doughty Scott. The supporting actors gave some depth to their characters. The pace of the film was very economical, hardly any wasted scenes. This economy maintained a level of suspense throughout the movie. Excellent directorial work by Ms Cavani.

Absolute rubbish! I understand that these films are based on books, but the change between Talented Mr. Ripley versus Ripley's Game is too great. This doesn't even seem like the same guy. I didn't like this character. This Ripley took stupid risks. Nothing made sense here. Ugh!

Ripley (Malkovich) does run a lot of game. But it trods along from shooting to shooting with Malkovich's dead pan face and monotone-delivered lines. Reading this would have been much better.

This is a well done and faithful rendition of Patricia Highsmith's novel. Coming from a fan of Highsmith, that's high praise.

It may not have the brilliant cinematography of Wender or Minghella's Ripley adaptations, but it captures the suspense, moral crises and deeply personal stakes very well.

Ripley's Game is a 2002 crime thriller starring John Malkovich as an upscale, opportunistic criminal. He's a sociopath, but kind of a nice sociopath. A very good performance by Malkovich, but the role really wasn't much of an acting stretch for him. It's tough to figure out exactly what his game is. Based on strength of plot and Malkovich's performance, this one receives 4 stars.

When you're told "oh you must watch this movie" and you check @IMDb and you see 6.6 and you've got #JohnMalkovich Never ever watch #ripleysgame it's either the funniest movie nobody knows or the most awful movie ever made. It's awful.

This is a good movie, but the Ripley portrayed by John Malkovich is not Patricia Highsmith's Tom Ripley. In this movie version we get a sadistic, cold, psychopathic killer without the nuance of insecurity and self-justification of Ms. Highsmith's character. A better version of Tom Ripley is seen in Wim Wenders' The American Friend with Dennis Hopper. The best film portrayal is by Rene Clermont's Purple Noon starring Alain Delon. The US version with Matt Damon as to also misses the mark. Tom Ripley is one of the most intriguing characters in fiction; the killer with a personality disorder that the audience can't help rooting for. The best way to get Tom is to read the books.

No talented Ripley here

This is a pretty good thriller, that stars John Malkovich as Tom Ripley. It's a continuation of the Talented Mr. Ripley story that is set in the early 2000s. I honestly had never heard of this film and recently watched The Talented Mr. Ripley, it has plenty of suspense and a nice performance by John Malkovich. If you like the character Tom Ripley then you should definitely check this one out.

John Malkovich is great as Tom Ripley, a cold eyed psychopathic manipulator that feels authentic. Just a shame this film is not as widely known as the earlier Matt Damon one.

I liked John Malkovich's performance and the film's less psychological approach. But I considered it more disappointing compared to The Talented Mr. Ripley.

Brilliant ! Definitely shouldn't be missed 👌

Whereas The Talented Mr Ripley portrayed Tom as an accident tormented with who he was, Malkovich's Ripley is much more self-assured, a master running the game. Standout performance from Winstone & Dougray Scott as well.

As much as I love John Malkovich, I thought this movie was utter rubbish. Nothing compared to "The talented Mr Ripley". The story was unconvincing and lame. No suspense. Blah
