Rock of Ages Reviews

The best musicals are those with songs that develop naturally within a story instead of obligatorily filling every moment with yet another song. This is not one of them.

| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Oct 4, 2022

An abundance of energy makes up for the unconvincing lip-syncing and spontaneous song-and-dance sequences that aren't as smoothly integrated into character actions.

| Original Score: 7/10 | Dec 2, 2020

Serves up well played cover tunes and an abundance of entertainment of the light, campy variety.

| Original Score: 3.0/4.0 | Sep 21, 2020

There's enthusiasm and energy here that balances out the more blatant weirdness and absurdity.

| Original Score: B- | Jul 31, 2020

Rock of Ages is fun. Sing to the songs. Laugh at the haircuts. Just don't expect rocket science.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Dec 10, 2019

Hough, who was good in the "Footloose" remake, is pretty engaging in the lead role -- much more than her male counterpart -- while Cruise nearly steals the movie playing the fading alcohol-hazed rock star.

Rock of Ages probably won't blow too many people's minds, but it still makes us want to sing along much of the time, and the tone is just right, kind without being preachy, humorous without being overly facetious.

| Original Score: B+ | Feb 1, 2019

Rock of Ages' plot is evidently pretty thin and you're never in doubt that love will conqueror all, but the film's adult themes, diluted as they are compared to the stage production, are wonderfully refreshing.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Jan 8, 2019

Rock of Ages might be lowbrow entertainment. But there's nothing to be embarrassed about in enjoying it.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Jan 3, 2019

One does not so much watch the movie as they stare on in maddening disbelief.

| Original Score: 1/4 | Nov 17, 2018

If you love '80s rock ballads, you will probably really enjoy this movie.

| Original Score: 6/10 | Nov 1, 2018

Is this what Mr. Cruise's career has come to? Doesn't he, as well as us, deserve more than this?

| Aug 10, 2018

It can be nearly impossible to watch at times.

Really, it's like a longer, louder version of Glee or American Idol, but with actors who can't sing rather than singers who can't act. Plus, it rocks you like a hurricane.

| Original Score: B- | Sep 8, 2017

"Rock Of Ages" is a soundtrack in search of a story, but it turns its utter disregard for narrative into its strongest ally.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Apr 17, 2016

...the two hours watching such a tepid and lip-synched effort is not a pleasant experience.

| Original Score: 1.5/5 | Jul 11, 2015

I know that in the history of cinema there have probably been worse movies. I'm just having a hard time thinking of one right now.

Oscar-worthy costume design by Rita Ryack ... enliven the proceedings that are constantly mired by Tom Cruise's unattractive vanity mugging, off-putting gay jokes and questionable taste in choreography.

Rock of Ages will make you want to raise your arms...and then immediately plunge your fingers into your eyeballs for salvation (you can go back for seconds to rescue your ears).

| Original Score: D- | Aug 15, 2013

Feelin' the noise ain't the same as feeling something for the characters, most of whom fail to amp it up in the soul department.
