Rocks Reviews

Sep 28, 2024

Probably my favourite movie of this year. If you have a younger sibling you'll probably end up sobbing. The dialogue and acting is so natural that you truly feel like an observer to a real situation. The girlhood shared between them feels so real and beautiful.

If there were such a thing, this should reside in the British film archives. Anyone not from London who wants to understand what real inner city London schoolkids are like, needn’t travel to the city. This is literally an absolutely perfect recreation of their behaviour. There are times it’s hard to believe it’s a film and not a documentary, it is that real. Astonishing acting really, because you cannot tell anyone is acting. Also a fine depiction as to why London is the best city in the world. Loved this, a real surprise hit for me. Watched on Netflix.

I've never left a film review in my life so the fact I'm here writing this at 2:22am says it all. Absolutely brilliant from start to finish. Superb cast - ESP the youngsters. These young ladies and lil Emmanuel are going to go far. VERY relatable story line, it would be great if all school kids watched this in school - it's a sure lesson in compassion and understanding friends at such a young age. I would've really benefited watching this during my school years. The music, the storyline, cast, all top notch. I'm excited to watch more from these directors, producers and actresses (and Emmanuel). So so good.

...just brilliant! The trials and tribulations of teenage life in high school further burdened by the heartache of abandonment and hiding a little brother from the social services. A story told with as many laughs as there are tears and reinforces the importance of friendship, especially among our teenagers. There is nothing to fault in this gem and the actors were magnificent given their tender years. I hope we see them all in future film and drama productions. Well done!

We are an ESL class of 14-year old students in northern France and we watched the film with our teachers. It is a good movie because we like the story: some people experience this situation, it is realistic and it raises awareness about children's life in poor districts or when abandoned. The actors play well. We like the bond between Rocks and her brother but also her friends. We like the diversity in Rock's group of friends. Happiness, sadness, angriness...there were a lot of emotions. Yet, we really don't like the end: the little boy is happy but will the mother come back? We don't know if they all see each other again, it is disappointing. We felt the film was repetitive too: they are constantly in danger. The language is difficult to understand.

Feels authentic, like these are real kids.

Amazing young actors - their relationships felt really authentic, funny and emotional in equal measure. Loved it.

Once every couple of years, we get a well-made, high-budget, intimate portrayal of a protagonist who is "poor in the city". Told from street level and intended to highlight gaps in the social safety net, struggles against adversity, and triumphs of willpower, these films often feature candid performances (often from actors that are new on the scene) and realistic characters. Sets are simple and usually feature frequent on-location shooting to lend authenticity to the visuals. The critical approval and awards nominations roll in, and we all agree to meet again in 18 months to start the process over again. Rocks pretty much checks all of those boxes: a teenage girl, Rocks (Bukky Bakray), struggles to keep her head above water and support both herself and her naive, innocent younger brother after their mother abandons them. The best thing that the film has going for it is the portrayal of Rocks' own friend group, which comes off as candid and authentic, featuring portrayals of young Muslim girls as actual people rather than a bundle of assumptions or political talking points. Aside from that though, this is largely a well put-together take on the type of story that you've seen ten times before, maybe differing in key story points but hitting most of the same emotional notes (even if they happen to be good ones). Can't wait for all the accolades for this first-time cast to translate to practically zero high-profile follow-on success in the industry. (3/5)

To begin, I honestly did not like some things. Firstly, I can't ignore that the plot is interesting and the trailer is well filmed. But when I was in front of the screen, I was really disappointed because I found that the camera shots weren't professionnal. In fact, I think that it is one of the most important factors to make a good film. Then, I did not appreciate the characters, who were not deep enough from my point of view. The plot has been treated superficially and I think that it is quite deceiving. Finally, the end of the movie was the most uninteresting moment because we don't really understand what happened. I mean that it was too implicit for me so I remained unsatisfied. I honestly hope that others enjoyed the movie but I can't say it for myself.

The story of this movie is very moving. It speaks about different topics like poverty, abandonment and friendship. The main characters are very charming, especially Shola and Emmanuel they face a lot of problems with the social service for example The end of the movie is very disappointing because we don't see what the characters Decome

This realistic film was very moving and well made. We feel the authenticity in each scene, and we are directly immersed in the story. All the characters are interesting ad endearing, and I think they bring a lot to the film. We can only put ourselves in the shoes of the hero, Rocks, who struggles and manages as best as she can to live with her little brother, because her mother left them. Even if I was a little disappointed of the end of this film, I really liked it, and it shows extremely well the importance of the place of family and friendship in life.

I left the cinema with a lot of emotion in me, all the pressure during the movie was quite intense but a little boring sometimes. The teenager's aspect of the film was a little bit annoying but well represented, those problems between girls in college are needed in the show but take too much time and make some parts of the movie boring. The social aspect of the film shocked me and made realize how big the inequalities between people are: some are abandoned by their parents; others live without any problem in a good neighborhood. The film represented well the Inequalities between people and from where they come. The action was slow to come and made the film a little bit boring.

The movie Rocks, by Sarah Gavron is a dramatic comedy that takes place in the United Kingdom. In this movie, I loved the characters. The little boy, Emmanuel is so funny and Rocks, the main character is determined and she has a good mood, I would be friends with her. All the other characters have their own personality and represent a part of the British society. I like the places and the landscape because it is a good representation of the diversity in the United Kingdom, for example, the embezzling market with people with different nationalities or the contrast between Rocks' place and other rich places. The only thing which disappointed me is the story because it is so predictable, there is no surprise and there is no end. I would have enjoyed knowing more about their future.

When I saw "Rocks", at the beginning I was sceptic. But little by little the movie started to be a little bit interesting. The hero "Rocks" is a young girl who lives in London and has an absent mother, so we can speak about the parental abandonment in this film. I like the movie because first it is realistic and dramatic, and this often happens so that made me realize that we live in a terrible world. Rocks just tried to run over her problems but she just aggravated the situation, and Emanuel her little brother undergoes. I do not really like the end of the movie because; it is not a happy end like we hoped for but she just accepts the fact she needs help and went to a new family, a host family.

Rocks by Sarah Gavron is an emotional movie. For me it's a good movie because the main character is a teenager and it shows the new generation and the issues they can meet when they are young in our society. The girl, Rocks, is courageous and she does everything for her little brother, Emmanuel. That's why we like her. Yet, Rocks always has the same problems and it's a little bit redundant... The way it was filmed is very interesting because it's very colorful and bright. There are beautiful landscapes and we can see different cultures in this.

I saw this film with my class. I saw the trailer before and I didn't really understand the trailer but I had hope about the film. But when I saw the film, my opinion has really changed. In this film, we follow the story of Rocks, a student, and Emanuel, a child, who lives with their mother. But the mother left the house and Rocks have to took care off Emanuel. The story isn't very original but I saw worse than that. But we have 3 majors problems : 1-The rythm of the film is slow. For me, it's truelly boring. The film last 1 hour and 33 minutes but I had the impression that it lasts 2 hours. A lot of scene are just useless (for exemple, walk on the street during 10 seconds) 2-The main character isn't interresting. At the beginning, We have a good opinion of the main character but when we move on in the film, actions of the characters are bad (without spoil of course : ) So the main character let me a bad impression 3-The end has swiming-pool, there is no conclusion at all. For me, it's missing a part of the film In conclusion, it's not bad at this point but a lot of little details come ruin the film.

So, we put 2,5 stars because the movie was super realistic, because of the light, the sound, the actors, who were great, everything represents the real life of teenagers in a popular neighborhood. We see that the director wanted to show something, and we can perceive it, but the main character is strangely written, which make her quite unsympathetic for us and for her friends. Personally, we were bored from the middle of the film and we found that the end was quite disappointing.

At the beginning of the movie, we already see the strength of the main character like a rock, related to the title of the movie. Yet, the end was disappointing because it is like the movie is unfinished. In my opinion, the end was boring compared to the first hour of the movie. The hero, Shola, is endearing. In fact, she took a lot of responsabilities such as keep looking after her little brother. The other characters are her friends, who help her when she needs it. The story is interesting because a lot of movies deal with precariousness, but never with siblings on their own. To talk about the places, the main scenes take place in popular neighborhood, so it's not pleasant to watch, but it shows the reality. Moreover, the colours used are very joyful compared to the sadness of the movie.

This movie was cool for passing the time because the story of the movie was great the first 30 minutes but then I didn't really understand the end which was really rotten because we don't know what happened with her brother. For my part I want to know what happened after the last action. But for the story of the movie I have nothing to say. The story of Shola ( her real name , her surname was Rocks) with her touching personality one sister who does all for her brother . This movie shows the world of poor society and THIS was really good.
