Roxanne Reviews
Such a clever adaptation of Cyrano de Bergerac. I LOVE this movie. It hits all the right buttons in the rom-com department. I have seen a lot of Steve Martin movies and this is probably one of my favorites. Plus, the locale adds a charm to the already cute and quirky story.
A charming modernization of Cyrano de Bergerac, Roxanne gets by on its heart and humor alike, exemplified by a pitch perfect Steve Martin.
loved this film weve watched it loads of times over the years and my person fav Steve Martin film
LOL, the funniest 01 hour: and 46 minutes ever!!!!!!!!!!!!
In this modern take on Edmond Rostand's classic play "Cyrano de Bergerac," C. D. Bales (Steve Martin) is the witty, intelligent and brave fire chief of a small Pacific Northwest town who, due to the size of his enormous nose, declines to pursue the girl of his dreams, lovely Roxanne Kowalski (Daryl Hannah) Instead, when his shy underling Chris McConnell (Rick Rossovich) becomes smitten with Roxanne, Bales feeds the handsome young man the words of love to win her heart But mishaps ensue as Chris has no ounce in confidence in him Maybe Bales was born with this abnormality for a reason He has learned to be brave since he was a child; figures if he was going to stand out he'd learn to laugh at himself I just thought this was an alright comedy Steve Martin certainly stands out but he's made better material using his comedic timing The sweetness borders on much sappiness too but Hannah and Martin keep things light
This is one of the few 80s romantic comedies directed by a former video nasty director. Yes, Australian Fred Schepisi also made Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith, a film that appears on the section 3 list of those films. That said, it's more of an art film with darker gore elements, but it's amazing that Schepisi went on to make this and Mr. Baseball. Star Steve Martin wanted to update Edmond Rostand's play Cyrano de Bergerac but change the ending so that Cyrano gets the girl in the end. He wrote 25 drafts over three years and changed Cyrano to a firefighter named C.D. Bales (his crew includes Michael J. Pollard, Max Alexander, Steve Mittleman, Damon Wayans, Matt Lattanzi, John Kapelos and Fred Willard). He's in love from afar with Roxanne Kowalski (Daryl Hannah), who is really interested in young firefighter Chris McConnell (Rick Rossovich). Chris is attracted to her as well, but despite his good looks, he's incredibly awkward, so he asks C.D. to help him win her over. Martin made this and Planes, Trains & Automobiles in the same year. That's a pretty good year.
A modern romcom telling of Cyrano De Bergerac. It plays mostly fine, but it's all just a little too safe and obvious. Martin is fun as always, but everyone else seems to just be going through the motions.
Great watch, will likely watch again, and do recommend. If you're going to get back in the way back machine, then Steve Martin is a reliably choice, and a story modeled off of Shakespeare is typically a pretty good choice too. A little Cirano goes a lot way. Yes, as a Cirano story, it's predictable, but it's certainly about the journey, not the destination. Martin certainly delivers an experience, and the way they decided to twist it is definitely unique if not inspired. I'd say this is begging for a reboot, but it's not exactly an original story, and I can't imagine what newer technology would add to it.
Dad liked my recommendation of watching "The Kominsky Method" and is now a fan of the show. Let's see if he took my advice again and checks out Steve Martin's Twitter page. Steve Martin posts comics there he does with Harry Biss and most Dad's love Steve Martin, so they will love his comic. They read their Sunday Funnies even though nobody gets the paper, and they'd be prone to pick up their guitar and play a few notes of "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?" once they hear Martin plucking his banjo in his feed. Dad didn't know you can look at Twitter without following celebrities. This is a public service announcement that most Dads don't know you don't have to have a Twitter account to see feeds. This is a pretty okay Steve Martin film that I think most Dads like because big noses aren't intimidating, and all Dads go prematurely gray and yearn for the hot astronomer new to the townie bar scene.
This is a fantastic movie! Great writing, great performances, great story, great location! I've seen this movie dozens of times and it holds up over time. It's laugh out loud funny.
Its laugh out loud funny, its sweet its charming its romantic its a real pleasure to watch a just sit back and enjoy movie, , the scenery and direction is perfect, the acting is great, its a classic,. one of those movies you can watch witch anyone and enjoy. one of steve martins best movies and he has a lot of great ones, classic
Martin is a blast but the film is nothing special.
A modern update on Cyrano de Bergerac, Roxanne is a wonderful rom-com with a mostly subdued Steve Martin in the lead. Thoroughly enjoyable.
This is good movie and one of Steve Martin's best. It is a true rom-com from the 80s and shows us how much of genius Martin really is.
I just recently saw this for the first time and was impressed at Steve Martin's humor. The film is s reimagining of Cyrano De Bergerac tale. The handsome Martin stars as a likable man with a very big nose who falls for Roxanne played by a charming Daryl Hannah. But because of his insecurities he helps out a hunky cop to win her affection. The movie is sweet and Martin and Hannah have good chemistry. It never aims to be more than what it is. But uts an entertaining romantic comedy with some genuinely likable characters and performances.
I was so surprised by the lower audience score for a movie I remember very fondly, I had to investigate. Best as I can tell, the saccharine version of a classic romance hasn't held up through the years and the more recent reviews may reflect that. And sure, I watch it now and think, "Seriously? No one is THAT gullible." But maybe it's a movie we need more of now. While not everyone in the small pristine little paradise of a town is as eloquent as Steve Martin's version of Cyrano, it's a lovable group, and if you let some serious suspension of disbelief in, you'll laugh with them and enjoy their summer together complete with witty repartee, some physical humor peppered in; all against the glorious backdrop of Nelson, British Columbia. Just enjoy and have some fun. It's like a little sherbet after a heavy meal.
Roxanne starring Steve Martin and Daryll Hannah is a cute movie and should be more popular than it is. Shot in a picturesque small town (Nelson BC) which adds to the charm the film is about a Pinocchio nosed new town sheriff(or firefighter I am forgetting) Steve Martin who falls for the new beauty in town played by Hannah. It reeks of charm and reminds us how nice these types of low budget films were- sadly they aren't being made anymore. Go watch it if you can- It isn't a mindblower but a cute, charming film starring the legendary comedian at the height of his power. (One of the most underrated charming comedies).
