Safe Reviews
A Statham film that suffered from a clunky script which made no sense.
A good bad-guy-with-a-good-heart-saves-a-little-girl movie to watch on a week night with popcorn. I enjoyed watching Catherine Chan's performance.
Jason Stratham is a pretty good action star. This one has a good story. Some twists and turns
Being a self-confessed fan of Jason Statham (yes, I am seeking professional help for this affliction) I was looking forward to ‘Safe’ - a film where the cheeky half cockney/half New Yorker takes a young girl under his muscular wing in order to protect her from not just the Triads, but Russian mobsters and even a branch of dirty cops. Obviously we know that `the Stath' will win though, kicking many heads along the way, but it's the ‘journey’ we're interested in (or rather the action!). Many people will have seen him do something similar in the ‘Transporter’ (1 through however many have been made since I wrote this). And he did it well for that franchise, i.e. dispatching armies of incompetent bad guys without a bead of sweat trickling off his shiny dome. However, here, in ‘Safe,’ it all gets a little too serious. Statham's previous efforts seem to have a degree of `knowingness' about them, as if they're just a little tongue-in-cheek (think Roger Moore's James Bond stint, but with less hair of course). In ‘Safe,’ the bad guys are indeed ten-a-penny and pretty generic. In fact, there's barely one that you'll remember - just see them as Russian Hood #12 and Dirty Cop #4 and that's about as much character development as you're going to get there. Other people have drawn comparisons with the Bruce Willis film ‘Mercury Rising,’ where he has to protect a youngster from all sorts of gangs. I haven't seen that one, so I can't comment. Although, at least it is different to have ‘The Stath’ have a child as a sidekick, rather than a ‘damsel in distress’ and (newcomer to the big screen) Catherine Chan does do a great job at portraying the young Chinese girl who has a gift for counting. Sometimes when children are involved in more ‘adult’ films, they can come across as annoying. Glad to say here that doesn’t happen. In fact, it’s only really her and Jason Statham who saves this film rather from being just a bit generic, to WOEFULLY generic and totally forgettable. At least it’s proof that he can helm a film and turn it into something more than it has any right to be. Overall, ‘Safe’ isn't bad. There are shootouts. There are fist-fights and even a car chase or two. However, it all just seems a little run-of-the-mill. With the ‘Transporter’ franchise you had flashy sets and over-the-top action. Here, you have the grimy backdrop of New York at night and a feeling you've seen most of this before. However, it does that job for us ‘Statham die-hards,’ so I can hardly complain. It’s one of those films that I’m happy to watch on DVD or on some online streaming service, rather than having to pay full price in the cinema. Not bad, just nothing that compares to the ‘Expendables’ series in terms of action and certainly nothing like the ‘Crank’ films in terms of realism (or lack thereof!).
Really good action movie, all you need , a top cast, really well planed story, as much action and drama to keep you watching . 10/10
Generic plot, action. How something this worthless can get made I have no idea. If you need some background noise and want to browse the internet it might have a purpose.
Esse filme cumpre com a promessa de entregar ação, violência gratuita e diálogos básicos, é o protagonista protege alguém muito importante na trama. (No caso uma criança carismática)
It is not a poor movie. But a few narrative choices hurt it overall. Having the main villain have so little screen time is also a mistake.
Good solid action movie. I have a slight issue with how easily they worked out a page containing one long number was the code to a safe but other than that not bad overall !
This is one time where back story hurt more than helped and made things way more complicated than needed for this level of movie.
I love Jason Statham. As you would expect, this is an action packed movie. That said, it's a typical action movie, so the plot is not very deep or tight. But still, it's very engaging and entertaining. The only problem, which was annoying, was how the Russian and Chinese mafias were constantly talking in Russian and Chinese during almost all of their conversations- which were frequent. This required reading so many English subtitles. Obviously, it's normal to speak your own language when you're talking to your own people. But this is an English movie taking place in America. So to be forced to read so much of the oral dialogue was rather annoying and distracting. Other than that, the action scenes were decent and the directing was good. The acting was good too. Overall, it's a good movie.
ein action in der style von 90er. für einen mal nicht schlecht.
Don't think too much. And don't mind the heavy editing. The action is quite solid and the narrative flows well enough.
Special Effects: 0,5/Sound Effects: 0,0/Acting: 0,5/Story: 0,5
It is really a great goal to kill so many People in less than 2h
I really enjoyed watching ever second of this movie, the story was great and watching Jason Statham fights in this movie was really enjoyable
Jason Statham stars in this film with interesting elements about a "down on his luck" ex-cop and cage fighter who risks his life to save a child prodigy from waring mobs. Statham is good, as always. Catherine Chan is appealing as the child math whiz t the center of the battle between the Russian and Chinese Mobs. The story ties in elements of police corruption, political corruption, as well as organized crime. Not a bad way to pass the time. Decent action but not one I would go out of my way to see. If Statham wasn't the star would easily go unnoticed.
It shows the usual Jason Statham as an anti-hero who did bad things in the past and wants to get away from it, but goes in Rambo mode to deal with dirty cops, russian and chinese mafia, all of them double crossing each other. It's like if Jason is a new Clint Eastwood and NYC as the modern-day Wild West. A very good action movie!!!
