The Saint Reviews

Apr 19, 2025

Heavy Spoilers, you've been warned. I first watched this movie as a child, and recently rewatched about 20 years later. I love this movie. Something about the style of the gadgets and "characters" Val Kilmer plays throughout the movie just feels like it's straight out of a comic book. For me personally, the idea that an orphan turned himself into a world-class thief, only to reunite with Elizabeth Shue and find a love worth more than infinite energy, is like some ultimate fantasy. It's one of my favorite films from childhood, because it keeps the same energy from start to finish, and besides the cheesy drive off into the sunset at the end is 10/10.

How can one go wrong with the movie that was my first date with my wife to be of thus far 26 years of marriage. We enjoyed it, and the rest is our history. When someone mentions Kilmer, The Saint comes first to mind, and sure was much, much, much better than Batman.

An excellent spy thriller.

Sayang oras. Siguro maituturing na groundbreaking ang mga gadgets na gamit nung mga panahong iyon pero story wise mukang malabnaw, malabo ang concept ng pelikula

Slick, fun, and thrilling...really lets Val Kilmer show his range.

One of my favorite movies. Loved Val Kilmer in it especially how he played each character saint.

A very entertaining action flick that honestly really wouldn't work if Val Kilmer didn't steal every scene he was in.

I went with 2 stars for this movie, I only seen it once and idk if I would watch it again. I might though and I guess that I would reccomend it to others. I thought that it was a alright movie. I have not seen the 60's show, nor did I see the newer movie. It was like a James Bond type movie, but not as good or on the same level as James Bond though. I did think it was cool that he used catholic saint names as his covers, I also thought that his charaters that he went around in were pretty cool. Not much else to say about these movies, it passed the time.

It tries to be a compelling spy thriller with solid lead performances from Val Kilmer and Elizabeth Shue, but its promising premise is wasted with a convoluted and incoherent story, an implausible and ludicrous narrative, a messy and uneven tone, and some moments that haven't aged well.

Good watch, would watch again, and can't confidently recommend. This movie is definitely dated. Val Kilmer was still riding on "I was Batman" and a bunch of Hollywood actors had decided to have a go at being the next action (/spy) guy, and I think it was to try to knock Tom Cruise out of his position (like that worked). This international spy of mysterious origin, even with an entire backstory as a prelude in the beginning of the movie, just so happens to be targeting "cold fusion", so we get a sci-fi edge. The person that happens to make the most plausible progress on cold fusion just happens to be a "stunningly beautiful woman", Elisabeth Shue, with a heart condition to top everything off. The actual movie experience was good, I promise, but thinking back on things, it all sounds so ridiculous. There is a lot of underlying romantic comedy at play here, and if I'm honest, I don't think they movie knew what it wanted to be: mob movie, sci-fi discovery, rom com, action / spy, political intrigue, catholic revolution, or orphan identity. Most of the fun stuff is spy versus Russian mob or cute rom com stuff, but you could probably get a better experience for either in different movies. It's a good time, but given all the options out there, you're probably better off looking for a more modern spy movie.

The Saint struggles early but recovers in the mid to late section of the film. I've heard there was a first cut that took a few more risks and I hope they offer this version at some point. Noyce is a competent filmmaker and he saves The Saint and allows Val Kilmer to disappear into the central role. The Saint was a success and I've found it strange they never allowed a sequel to be made. The early part of the film struggles to find a purpose and is a little over the top with its setup. The film manages to recover once Val Kilmer enters the film and the struggle between him and the villains sets up a relentless chase style film. I've always enjoyed The Saint while critics have dismissed it. The film is something of a guilty pleasure for myself and I hope they manage to revisit the film with a DC version at some stage. 20/07/2020

A surprisingly dull thriller.

Starts out with promise, quickly fades due in part to a nonsensical screenplay.

Muy aburrida y con música muy mala. A comparación de la serie de los 60's con Roger Moore esta deja mucho que desear.

Its a Fun movie definitely a favorite of mine good story for a 90s film a good film to watch with your girlfriend for its romantic tones Or a good film to watch alone as its a good james bondish action ride

One of my favorite films. The chemistry between Shue and Kilmer is just amazing! Too bad they didn't release it on bluray.

Yet another uninterrupted entertainment at 100% as usual from the master Noyce.

The heists and the disguises are fun, but the romance rings hollow and the villains aren’t threatening enough.

Outstanding movie! One of my all time favorites. Brings you back to the great days of the late 90s. Excellent show!!!!!!

It feels like a bad Adam Sandler movie. Val Kilmer's over-the-top disguises make it feel like he thought it was a comedy while Elizabeth Shue and the directors thought this was an action/drama.
