Saludos Amigos Reviews

While not as good as its follow-up, this is definitely an enjoyable watch!

A decently charming package film that makes up for its incredibly short length with some charming vignettes, most notably the watercolor animation experiment at the end with a cute version of “Aquerlo de Brasil” and the first appearance of the suave green parrot Jose Carioca.

Probably one of the most forgettable movies in the Disney canon. It has some good stuff but is incredibly dated

It was okay. Definitely one of the least bad package film from Disney but not the worst thing in the world. There’s a couple things I liked about it like the documentary stuff was pretty good, the animation was beautiful, and it was interesting. But there was stuff that didn’t get my attention. Still, it’s okay.

It was very well done, a nice, charming, not-too-long time capsule into South America, almost 100 years ago. Recommended for education and for fun.

nothing much to say about this movie. it's entirely forgettable, Donald the duck, in my opinion, is a very irritating character and I'm not a fan of mixing Live action with animated, especially in this period of time and one of disney's worst films. there also isn't much of a story. 4.0/10

An interesting film showcasing different cultures in South America. This film also had some nice experimental animation which was the highlight for me. Granted I do want to visit South America now.

An anthology film of hybrid animation and live action shorts. The film itself isn't much to see. The shorts on their own are good but as a package do not really do much to celebrate. The real interesting story is how and why this film was made. Walt Disney was an ambassador to Latin and South America to convince those countries to not support the Nazi cause during World War II. He brought his animators along and they created the shorts that comprised this film and The Three Caballeros. This film is also the first appearance of José Carioca, who they should use more often! If you're curious, check it out.

An interesting dive into South American cultures, Saludos Amigos was a unique experience. Though lacking any substance to last more than 41 minutes, it was much more entertaining than Fantasia.

Even though it's way too short for a Disney movie, SALUDOS AMIGOS does make up for it by bringing all of our favorite characters on an incredible tour of South America.

While i do get the hate this movie gets with its accuracy being not the best. But to me this movie still manages to be entertaining, funny, artistically interesting, and a but load of more charm than the sequel.

Disney certainly made education fun with this one

Sure, it is a little bit dated for nowadays, still it is a very educational picture (in the animation and History department), worthy watching just for the historical content and of course, the cartoons are captivating. Also, the debut of Joe Carioca (Zé Carioca here in Brazil) is always a good one to show to everyone.

I don't have much to say about this one. It's pretty endearing at times, very aged at others. I know Disney as a whole, has this way of embracing other cultures and I think much of it stems from some early films like this. I really appreciate it for that, even if SOME of the depictions are a bit outdated. Some of these shorts work better than others, I appreciate the cultural aspects though. The 1940's era is pretty lukewarm for me with most of these. 5/10 Average

Before I actually got into this film, I want to talk about the context that this film has. For any one that's not a Disney nerd, Walt Disney animation studios have had multiple different eras. The first five films were "The Golden Age of Disney" (Snow White through Bambi), and there was also the "Silver Age", which will be talked about later. But between those two eras, World War 2 happened, which means money really wasn't going around for things like animated movies. However, that didn't stop the studio from making movies, which were called "package" movies, which were all basically anthology movies, with a very mixed bag of quality. It starts here with "Saludos Amigos" and ends with the best film from this era "The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr Toad". Now, with all the context in mind, I wish I liked this film more than I did. It's not that there isn't anything bad or awful in this movie, all the individual parts work well enough. It's just that the combination of all those things really don't make a solid film, and unlike Fantasia, it doesn't do it in a way that's gonna blow your mind in anyway. One, the movie is 45 minutes long, so does it really even count as a movie? Like short animated films can work (Dumbo was only a hour long, so I've seen them done it before), but it has to be more then 45 minutes. Next, not everything is animated, there are so live action portions throughout this movie, which can be a little interesting at some points, but also feel out of place. Finally, they're trying to teach the viewers about the ways of certain countries of South America, which is a good idea on paper, but it hasn't aged the best, there's a reason why they have that culture message before the movie now. Really, only the Brazil song works for me, and that's more for the animation then anything else. That's one thing that I don't think gets enough credit here, the animation is still good. But it can't save this movie from being unfocused and not doing anything new. If you want to say you've watched them all, I guess it's fine. For me, sadly, this is the first Disney movie I would give a confident skip to, which I'm expecting to do a lot for these package films.

A boring disaster with no substance or emotion. It's a disgrace to the Disney film library.

It's one of those Disney movies that hasn't really aged well. Two of the shorts are way forgettable and two are just okay.

The story of Pedro the plane was the highlight of this generally fine package film.
