Sam & Kate Reviews
This movie could be seen as a plodding, somewhat melancholy rom-com-dram until you realize what it actually is - a lovely story about loss and love. For obvious reasons the chemistry between the actors is incredible. Hoffman and Spacek are masterful acting artists, and their children are terrific in their roles, and extremely believable in the way they build their characters.
Not a terrible movie. Not great. Everyone acts well. The story is fine, but seems familiar. It tries for depth but it's not really a deep film. It's vaguely amusing when it's trying to be amusing. There's sadness too. Hoffman, although a formidable actor, has become unlikable to me. His son, though, has charm. Don't go in expecting too much and you might not be disappointed.
An enjoyably cast gimmickry that coasts charmingly in delight with honest wisdom stemming from dramatically handled relatability that was pulled off decently till it effectively slows in polishing blur. (B)
It was a great story with a lot of heart. Real life Dustin's son & Sissy's daughter are in it playing their adult children. The film will make you laugh, smile and cry. Don't miss it!
We're fans of rom-coms, and of sweet stories, and like to be surprised. THIS surprised us. We figured that the two children of famous actors would be ok, and this particular movie wasn't trying too hard ... it was sweet, and slow, and kind. I immediately was impressed with Schuyler Fisk -- she's a great-looking girl with effortless ability to act. She seems very experienced. Jake Hoffman was also appealing, but I couldn't tell if he was inexperienced or just doing a really good job at playing someone who is unsure of himself. When we got to the last scene, and Jake's character is listening to Schuyler's character playing piano and singing for the first time in a long time ... his reaction was so subtle, and so well-done ... I was crying. I'll remember this movie. Well done.
So refreshing to watch a movie about good-hearted people.
Dustin Hoffman's character is such a grump and drag. How he treats his son makes me so angry. He ruins the movie.
I liked it a lot. It's a completely down to earth film, that I think many people would enjoy. It's a from the heart movie.
An enjoyable movie in its simplicity, played by magnific actors and actresses.
Maybe it's because I watched this movie a bit hungover from last night, but I laughed I cried I loved and I died. Jake and Schuyler were magic together and what a beautifully told story of two people and their parents and families. I loved this story. I love Jack Hoffman in everything he does - the actor is pure craft. Ok...now Im gushing.
It's really a story about aging parents and adult kids. Spacek is a hoarder and Hoffman is an angry old man. Sam and Kate are their kids, dealing with suffering of their own while trying to watch after their parents.
I loved this movie!!!
Sweet, Poignant and cuts through the BS to the bone. Do not miss this touching story of life, love & loss as we all experience it.
Touching and emotional. Well acted and produced. We enjoyed it.
Good clean movie.. Great story.
The first half had a lot of really good dialogue that carried some genuinely mildly funny moments. The second half was so typical of modern dramas... A bad event happens and then the movie just goes nowhere for 30 minutes. Nothing happens. No great emotional moments. Just people doing random things and cue the sad music and non-ending ending. Worth a watch if for the first hour only.
Very slow moving shmaltz.
Sort of a slow moving movie in parts. Love Dustin Hoffman!
It was a good story with very good actors.
It was good but not what I expected at all. I came for a comedy and to me it was dry.
