Saturday Night Fever Reviews
Very underwhelming. I just watched it for the first time, and not only is there barely any (good) dancing, but it really glorifies violent behavior towards women. Travolta's character is far from the sex symbol I imagined him to be, except for his raw honesty and some cool dance moves for sure.
Watching Saturday Night Fever on Saturday night should earn me bonus points! Anyway the film fails to actually make me sympathise for any character but Barry Millers character "Bobby" who definitely it's the most developed character of anyone in Saturday Night Fever. I find it extraordinary John Travolta is in two of my iconic and world-wide known dances in film history (Pulp Fiction and Saturday Night Fever). The film feels 35 minutes too long, has pointless plot points and overall just feels Underdeveloped. The only message I received from the film is to Never ever drink and if I do at least not drink a vehicle shortly after. Honestly after the first 30 minutes it falls off massively just something about it loses a piece of greatness. My biggest issue Is I can't stand any character AT ALL (exception being Barry Millers character) not even Travoltas and he makes everything he does amazing but the writing is just shameful. Also what a missed opportunity for Travoltas Priest brother character whom is brushed off like a ant on a wall.
Saturday Night Fever It's a film that everyone should see at least once, it doesn't matter why.. they simply have to.
Does dancing give an opportunity?
The music is 5 stars. The nostalgia is 5 stars. The plot itself leaves a lot to be desired. The real reason you will want to watch this movie is to relive the Disco era of the mid-late 1970s which this movie does perfectly. There are some movies you watch purely for the reason that they are a time capsule to a point in time. This is one of those movies. As long as you know what you have going in, you will have a great time with this movie. For an old fart like me, it represents a love letter to a lost time.
Classic movie,Great acting,story,soundtrack.
Epic soundtrack and awesome dancing. Plot was a little too insane.
A beloved story of wild nights and teenage angst in a working class Brooklyn neighborhood. Reminiscent of "The Last Picture Show" in its depiction of the economic and cultural deterioration of a small community, the film does a sublime job of contrasting the melancholia and tragedy of its subject's everyday lives with the ecstatic release found on the dance floor.
An absolute classic!
I kind of wish I wouldn't have watched Saturday Night Fever. It's a dated, melodramatic mess. Instead of story, they have strutting. Instead of character development, they have choreography. Instead of dialog, they have dancing. This movie is a joke, but the only funny thing about it is how seriously it takes itself. And there really isn’t anyone to root for. None of the characters are likeable. It’s also a lot more offensive than I anticipated. The soundtrack may be the only good thing that came out of Saturday Night Fever being made and now, after watching it, I like the songs a little bit less.
Para mí una película con una trama incomprensible, ahorre al llegar a la mitad ya la apagas, lo único sanbale de ahí es la banda sonora porque de ahí ni Jhon Travolta y su baile lo salva
Not really sure what the point of this film is but Travolta pulls some brilliant shapes on the dance floor. Bought on DVD.
I really hope this is sequel
One of my all time favorites. I love this movie because it is filmed in the middle of the disco generation and as a result, is partially a documentary. John Travolta's character is beautifully flawed and the romantic chemistry he has with Karen Lynn Gorney who pretty much phased out of the acting scene after this. The music is perfect. The footage of Bay Ridge in the 70s priceless. And the supporting cast was powerful.
A 70's Classic coming of age tale. The acting is phenomenal by Travolta and terrific chemistry with Gorney. He has tons of charm and is cast perfectly for the role. The cinematography is amazing with fantastic camerawork and very memorable scenes/locations. Without a doubt the highlight is the soundtrack for the ages and defines the lates 70's The editing is solid and the pacing is very good. The only problem is because its such a simple plot sometimes it can lose focus every now and then with side stories that aren't necessary to the plot like his brother and the scenes where their on the bridge like idiots. But there still good scenes regardless. Anyone that is a fan of 70's film, Disco, or Travola will love this.
Will openly admit to having very fond memories of school discos, singing along (often forgetting words) and dancing (with some energy if not such a discernible beat) to music, a music college graduate has to start somewhere, that was great then and still is now. 'Saturday Night Fever' may not be a perfect film, or a masterpiece, but to me and many others it is high-energy and hugely enjoyable entertainment that took me back to nostalgic, and happier, times in my life. This was the late 90s-early 2000s, just to make things clear, memories of the 70s are none due to not having been born yet. 'Saturday Night Fever' is one of those films where it is easy to sit back and forget any problems and relax after a hard day (am hardly any stranger to those, so 'Saturday Night Fever' was a much needed distraction). There are imperfections sure. Anybody looking for one of the all-time great scripts or a great story and iconic characters better look elsewhere. This said, the script is not all bad, but does have some cheesiness that will make one cringe, regardless of whether they are demanding much or not. The story and characterisation is somewhat more patchy though better than given credit for, the story does absorb but a couple of the subplots are silly and don't feel as resolved as they should, particularly that for the rival gang. One of 'Saturday Night Fever's' biggest problems is how the character of Stephanie is written and how Karen Lynn Gorney plays her. The character is very underwritten and often very annoying, giving Gorney little to do and failing to inject much charm or likability, outside of some great dancing. However, the production values are great with lots of glorious colour and style. John Bradham directs with a clear affectionate love for the period and subject, and the film does offer a more complex view of disco than one might think with some easy to relate to themes. Best assets are the music, dancing and John Travolta. The soundtrack, with some of the most memorable contributions being from the Bee Gees, is one of the best, most unforgettable and iconic soundtracks of any film from the 70s, and great music in its own right. Music is a real passion and something that is always talked about in my prolific reviews here, and something that mostly garners a lot of praise but have also been known to be picky. The dancing is full of high-octane energy, snazz and pizazz, Travolta especially though the dancing is the best thing about Gorney's performance. John Travolta is a revelation in the role that made him an overnight star and pop-culture icon. Danny from 'Grease' may be the slightly more famous role but to me Travolta is better here. In conclusion, very enjoyable though not without its imperfections. 7/10 Bethany Cox
Finally decided to watch it and it was cool to see an iconic movie from the 70's. It was enjoyable at times and it was great seeing travolta doing his thing so young
A classic in many senses. Great music, fantastic dancing and a really excellent portrayal of coming-of-age in blue collar NYC. The beliefs & language were & are, all too common all over the US. I was up dancing during this film!
I can see why this is a regarded as a bit of a classic of its time. It is somewhat predictable in terms of the plot/script but it kept my interest throughout and I enjoyed the scenes of the actual disco dancing. The dichotomy between the glam of the dancefloor and the working class reality of the protagonists daytime life is made quite stark. There are some saucy scenes and some very strong language, so you should perhaps be aware of that, hence its original x rating I suppose. As a film about disillusioned teenagers/young adults in the 1970s, this is pretty good, I'd say, so yes, I would recommend it.
