Scream 3 Reviews

A mainly by the numbers affair, enjoyable enough while it lasts, but instantly forgettable.

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Feb 20, 2025

At 116 minutes, this third installment lumbers along like a serial killer in shackles.

| Original Score: 2/4 | Feb 20, 2025

Scream 3 feels very much like the stretch run towards the finish line.

| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Feb 20, 2025

Horror fans may enjoy it all fractionally less than Holywood haters.

The whole thing's like an episode of Scooby-Doo scripted by a graduate in Media Studies...

| Original Score: 3/5 | Feb 19, 2025

Ehren Kruger does a pretty good job of reproducing his [Williamson] smart-alecky dialogue.

Despite plenty of ooga-booga thrills, whodunit guess work and blood-red herrings, there aren't a lot of scares in this somewhat anemic finale to the trilogy.

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Feb 19, 2025

Its advantage, on the other hand, is that it rewards our intelligence as well as tests it.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Feb 19, 2025

Despite the efforts of all concerned to up the ante one last time, the sense of déjà vu is overwhelming.

| Feb 19, 2025

Manages to wring some ironically metaphysical comedy from the movie-within-a-movie motif, and Parker Posey turns in a typically sly performance as the movie-within-a-movie Gale Weathers.

| Original Score: 2/4 | Feb 19, 2025

Actually a scathing indictment of how women are treated behind-the-scenes in Hollywood.

The series is already so dense with internal references and exposition that it's on the verge of becoming more of a trivia game than a movie series. Still, for the initiated, the third time's a charm. For everyone else, it's just a scream.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Jun 26, 2019

[The cast] is good. And so are director Wes Craven's inventive stagings of these set-tos. Not so good is the absence of hip cross-references to the classic horror tropes.

Virtually none of the craftsmanship of Craven's best is on display here, and what good ideas do turn up are largely recycled from previous efforts. This Scream has been widely marketed as the series' final installment. Better late than never.

Tthe movie belabors the idea that it's the last of a trilogy rather than the third in a series.

| Sep 7, 2011

Merely adheres to the very convoluted whodunit formula that it outwardly addresses via a from-the-grave video recording by Jamie Kennedy's genre know-it-all.

| Original Score: C- | May 20, 2011

Scream 3 is a crafty and well-crafted wrap-up that really does bring a satisfying sense of closure to the franchise.

| Mar 26, 2009

Craven has produced a poor carbon copy of his own New Nightmare.

Ultimately, this is the question: How often can you send up the same thing? By a series' third film, you should actually care about characters. It's hard, though, when the odds are that everyone's either a killer or a goner.

Fulfills its modest ambitions by delivering a glib slasher spoof for the mall crowd.
