Sea of Love Reviews
Al Pacino performance is outstanding, John Goodman is really terrific and Ellen Barkin performance really sparks with fire and i could compare Play Misty For Me and Sea of Love a music from a song thriller that audiences may scare by listening to it. And Sea of Love has their own twist on the climax.
Instigante, sensual e criativo. Uma série de crimes misteriosos põem à prova um detetive obstinado (Al Pacino) que luta para não ceder ao charme de uma loira misteriosa e vítima.
An enjoyable romantic film.....the killer in this movie is not important compared to a divorced depressed cop finding love again.
Perfect Pacino in his prime! This may not be the most artistic of his films, but it's a perfectly paced, enjoyable mystery/romance/thriller, with hot chemistry between a gorgeous Barkin and Pacino. Also great performances from John Goodman as Pacino's partner, and Richard Jenkins and the beleaguered husband of Pacino's ex. A fun feast for Pacino fans
So the song is absolute fire, Pacino is in his lunatic bag in this one. Just wildly all over the place start to finish.
Pacino is quite good here and I liked the earlier scenes which have both an air of authenticity and good dialogue but the romance and the final twist are both entirely unconvincing. The movie fittingly ends with a ridiculous scene.
Fun thriller. Pacino is always great
Great performances from its leasing actors and it doesn't stop from keeping you guessing until the end!
When this came out, I remembered the trailer in theatres and told my college self, what a boring looking movie. And the first couple of times Insaw this, I thought it was mediocre at best. Many years later, past my mid-life crisis age, I found the movie to be hilarious, gripping, intense and beautifully tragic with a perfect ending, by ending, I am not referring to the resolution, but the chemistry between Pacino and Barkin's character as the scene faded to black. Many excellent performances here including supporting roles from a very young Samuel L. Jackson and a nice comedic performance by John Goodman. What makes me love this movie most is Barkin and Pacino. One of my all time favorites.
Although actually a fusion of crime, thriller, comedy, and romance, there is no inconsistency, whether with the plot, the scenes, or the pacing. The chemistry between Al Pacino and Ellen Barkin itself should make Sea of Love worth watching, let alone the aforementioned. And you get to listen to the song of the same name a few times, without it getting boring as the director/producers ensured the same part doesn't play over and over again.
The main three actors are good, but I think it's dated. I believe it's a comedy.
While it goes through The Erotic Thriller cliches it's still an entertaining Neo Noir with a fantastic cast, Jazzy Score and solid direction
I'm a big Al Pacino fan and yet this gem had escaped me until now. He plays a troubled detective (sound familiar?) investigating a serial killer, who appears to be finding victims by using a personal advert in the lonely hearts dating section of a newspaper. Frank (Pacino) teams up with a hugely enjoyable John Goodman to track down the killer, and they decide to place their own adverts to entice the would-be killer to meet up for a date. The plan backfires spectacularly when Frank falls in love with Helen, who may well be the prime suspect in the case. It sounds like a set up that we've all seen, even though I couldn't put my finger on anything specific. The most obvious comparison is probably Fatal Attraction (1987) but this is far less hysterical than Glenn Close's bunny boiling (although I do think Fatal Attraction is great) and despite the fact that Frank has less to lose than Michael Douglas' character I felt myself believing in the central relationship completely, and the calmness and collectiveness with which Helen (a terrific Ellen Barkin) holds herself throughout the film really keeps you on edge as to whether she is guilty or not. This is less an erotic thriller and more of a neo noir crime tale, complete with shots of bright neon lightning against low-key lit cityscapes. I have to say I thought this was terrific, and certainly made me at least look at director Harold Becker's Imdb page, although I wasn't overwhelmed with what the general view on his other feature films opined. If anyone else has thoughts on Becker's other output, get in touch.

I always thought this movie was Al Pacino at his prime. being Al Pacino. Lots of twists and the unlikely partnership with John Goodman was far better than I expected including clever humorous comments between the two. And the scene, yes THE scene between Al Pacino and a steaming hot Ellen Barkin in her prime was just about the hottest movie moment the year it came out and possibly a year or two on either side of it.
Pacino's quirky, carefully considered performance makes Sea of Love more memorable than the average thriller.
3rd watch 2023: Another very fun nexus movie. Could definitely see how films like: Heat, Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas, Bringing Out The Dead, Basic Instinct (obviously) - likely drew inspiration here. Great attention to detail and character, a very fun watch all around. 2nd watch 2020: No masterpiece, but a thoroughly enjoyable place to disappear for a while.
Surprisingly dull thriller given the talent involved.
Just Ok. A lot of plot holes. Lazy dialogue.
