Seberg Reviews

Nov 3, 2024

It's hard to imagine anything more tone deaf than a film about the civil rights movement that centres around the struggle of a wealthy white woman. It was also slow and rather boring.

Kristen Stewart is brilliantly cast as Jean Seberg, a real-life American actress who became an icon following performances in the 1960s French New Wave classic film BREATHLESS and later returning to Hollywood. Stewart really does look just as 1960s chic and as glamorous as the real-life Seberg, with her pixie cut and impeccable fashion, though that glamour is tempered with unexpected depth and tortured inner turmoil. However, while SEBURG shines when it comes to spot-on period details and color, it falls flat when it comes to the character's dramatic arc. It's an interesting true-life story of how the FBI targeted Seberg for her liberal political views, but the film fails to present the story in any sort of meaningful or insightful manner outside of "the man" shutting down dissent at the expense of the individual. Steward carries the film and is fantastic as Seberg, but that's really the only reason to watch the film.

Kristen S2... Revoltate e Apaixonante…

Kristen Stewart is excellent. For me, this is her best career performance! (Her performance in Spencer is unbelievable, but here it's even better!

A surprisingly disappointing movie. From the low budget production, to Benedict Andrews mushy directing style. Kristen Stewart is beautiful but totally miscasted, despite the best efforts of the costume, hair and makeup department, she seemed incapable to channel the À bout de Souffle's Jean Seberg with her very limited acting abilities.

Outstanding performance by Kirsten Stewart.

Thoroughly enjoyable and sobering watch. While the movie does something of a disservice to Jean Seberg through it's sometimes cliched dialuge and wondering story; It also hits deep when it needs to, with an amazing performance by Kristen Stewart and good supporting role Jack Solomen.

The film portrays Seberg, who was highly political in real life, as an insipid character whose primary motivation for getting involved with the Black panthers was getting laid by a black guy. It does Seberg a disservice to portray her in this way and reduces an interesting story about a committed political activist to a steamy romance

It's an important movie to watch for anyone who is not aware of Jean Seberg's story because the way her human rights were violated should concern us all. As a matter of fact, it's shocking how little outcry there has been about this. And unfortunately it's no wonder then that most artists and celebrities today, like Kristen Stewart herself, play it safe and think coming out as gay is a big thing when in truth artists of today have gone backwards in terms of breaking taboos and inspiring us to think and act! Some movies are so important to be told that it's not as important how they are told or if they are perfect or not. This movie does a very good job at exposing something most people are not aware of but need to be unless they don't give a shit about anyone's life, including their own.

She is young and glamorous, an American who stars in Godard movies. She is married to Romain Gary, one of France's most prominent writers, has a lovely child and lives in opulence in both Paris and Los Angeles. What more could she want? To publicly and financially support the Black Power movement and make love to one of its leaders. For that, Jean Seberg becomes a target of the FBI's illegal COINTELPRO program [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/COINTELPRO]. And, oh, are they good at what they do! Kristen Stewart does a magnificent job depicting the way this real life actor was hounded and destroyed, up to her death of suspected suicide at age 40. Watch this movie, along with The Trial of the Chicago 7, to learn about the history you weren't taught in school. I'm still hoping to see such history from the point of view of the Black people who lived it.

Just okay. As usual, Kristen Stewart's performance seems a bit flat.

An interesting true story such as this one deserves a better biopic.

This thriller-drama, focused on part of the life of the French New Wave Cinema icon, American actress Jean Seberg (Kristen Stewart), looks beautiful, especially when it comes to colorful costumes of the 60s era. However, these bright colors are contrasting unsettling events in which the life of Seberg – who donates money to a Black Panther organization - takes a tragic turn after FBI leaks a false story about her in the tabloids… Unfortunately, the movie doesn't explore enough Seberg's involvement in activism, apart from her affair with Hakim Jamal (Anthony Mackie), which results in her character lacking a depth. On the other hand, there's a lot of screen time given to two fictional FBI agents, the racist one and the sympathetic one –(Vince Vaughn and Jack O'Connell). The movie ‘Seberg' only scratches the surface of its title character's turbulent life and persona.

Underwhelming, disjointed, and quite one-dimensional in its storytelling. Seberg, the movie, should have had more depth and character given the subject's real-life story.

It was amazing. I can't verbalize it, but it touched by soul. It broke my heart.

This was a perfect example of why I usually don't love the biopics. The subject here, whom I knew little about, seemed to provide many different avenues from which to develop multiple themes and motivations deeper and instead chose the paint by numbers approach, resulting in a meh film with an under utilized cast.

Decent, Kristen Stewart was very good. The scenery was good. Nice look at the late 60's and early 70's. Vince Vaughan had his best performance as serious acting role. On the negative side, the writing was fraudulent to the story and far too left wing.

YE-YE The star of "Breathless". J. Edgar Hoover's bullying FBI. The militant Black Panthers. Hoo-boy, has this movie got it goin' on! Kristen Stewart takes another step towards Hollywood credibility, slipping into a pixie cut and some super chic yellow fashion, strutting in the heels of tabloid sensation Jean Seberg to some delicious Scott Walker crooning. Oh those swinging' sixties! Soon enough the gloss fades into the background as the spirited actress starts chumming around with what the feds deem the wrong crowd. And away we go. Instead of focusing solely on Seberg, we get a parallel story line of an FBI agent caught in the escalating and illegal tactics favoured back then, charged with discrediting the actor, and in the process, ruining her life. The story is bat guano crazy, and sadly, true. So much happens that it hardly fits into one little movie, and perhaps that is the problem here. Seberg's past, her family, her lovers, are given short shrift, at the expense of the FBI angle. Funny how the film keeps harping on the star status of its lead, but fails to discover her. Great bit of history, and Stewart is impeccably cast, but "Seberg" deserves better. - hipCRANK

The problem with this film was inserting the fictional FBI character. The story of Jane Seberg is extremely interesting. It starts off strong, but veers further and further from reality as it goes on. By the end, it doesn't resemble reheat happened in reality at all and if you know the true story, I'd say it's a slap in the face to Jean Seberg. They took too many liberties when the real story had enough going for it to be made into a film. Kristen Stewart was really good in it. The problem was the writing not the acting.
