While the logistics and cinematography are entirely enamoring it is the interiority of these characters that draws us with such intent...
| Original Score: 96/100 | Sep 9, 2021
A memorable film from writer/director Juan Jose Campanella.
| Original Score: 3.5/4.0 | Sep 22, 2020
Just like Sweden's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, the makers of this film seem to confuse high art and police procedural.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Aug 5, 2020
The film's bifurcated structure is the most interesting thing about Secret In Their Eyes, but it can't save the incredibly ham handed script.

For all its drama, it feels painfully forced and trite, as dour and dull as it is unfocused.
| Original Score: 2/4 | Aug 5, 2019
An interesting treatise on the notion of ardency and the nobility of longstanding, ungratified love, plus a sly critique of the malleability of justice in '70s Argentina.

...a true, albeit bittersweet pleasure for everyone who watches it. [Full review in Spanish]

More of Eva and Juan Peron and the impact of fascism on the society would have added to the movie. Nevertheless, it is a good ride, but not a great one.

In perfect synchrony, all of it's elements come together to create a masterpiece. [Full review in Spanish]

... what might have been just a two-hour episode of Law and Order: Argentina is instead a rich, literary tapestry. ... I wish this could become a franchise.

This decade-hopping, tone-shifting mystery-thriller-romance from Argentina is about as deep as a kiddie pool, which isn't to say it's an unpleasant frolic.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Nov 16, 2011
This complex and involving Argentinean crime drama, with strong moral overtones, won the Best Foreign Language Oscar.
| Original Score: B+ | Jul 21, 2011
There are some "Are we there yet?" stretches as the film plays out toward the unexpected ending, but the final destination is worth the total travel time.

The story's political subtext ... provides a constant undertow of fear and menace to the hero's investigation.

The Secret in Their Eyes ... is an enjoyable procedural in its own right. Campanella's film is the Argentine equivalent of Gone Baby Gone, with a touch of Atonement thrown in for good measure.
| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Oct 21, 2010
It's a handsome production with a story rooted in the nasty past of political fascism, which may explain why it won, because it sure isn't subtle or dramatically challenging.

Tightly structured, visually conscious, well-acted mystery and love story.
| Original Score: 8/10 | Sep 25, 2010
A superior procedural.
