Settlers Reviews
Had the pleasure of working security for one of the lead actresses of the movie and boy did they work hard to get out what is on screen, in heat of 52°C at times , scorpions and other creepy crawleys .. well made with an honest view of what it "could be like" taking into account human nature.
When faced with the option, rent or buy, I chose rent, because the ratings were low. What I found was a riveting and suspenseful story that unfolded in a way that made you feel uncomfortable. You're faced with the vulnerability of a family with a small child in a fight for survival and it's thrilling. I don't think the ratings are accurate, I should have bought this, not rented. I am here to pick the score up a little bit. Good acting, great pacing and an immersive start that worked well and set the fictional world up in a way that feels believable before they went ahead and started the mayhem. This movie wouldn't be as good without the start, the start was what made this movie work. However there was a lot more than that they got right. Thoroughly enjoyable.
Pleasantly surprised by this one, with solid acting and good focus, Settlers has good emotional range and depth in a unique setting with a small cast that still manages to create good tension and suspense as it tells the story of Remy, her parents... and Jerry.
I don't watch movies just to see hours of depression, and suffering, with absolutely no point to it. I think whoever wrote this might require psychological help. I watched to the bitter end, thinking there must be some point to it. Nope. No point whatsoever. I know it sounds Cliche, but I truly would have enjoyed polishing my shoes for an hour and 45 minutes, more than than. At least the time spent would have had a motecum of value.
There's "slow burn" and then there's "can this be over now?" This movie is the latter. Interesting premise. It would probably make a great short story. (Like... five pages?) But as a feature film? No.
Typical apocalypse and survival movie where no one works together and all wants to kill each other with no means of success in the end. Just constant fighting instead of helping each other survive. Also bowing to children instead of educating them in the reality of the situation you are in.
usual process of culpabilization of Occidentals
An old Plot, never beet told the way this movie delivered. Will leave you thinking days after you watched it.
Very slow with no message and weak story. Besides, very sad.
A bleak exploration of Stockholm syndrome, without the hope that accompanies Stockholm syndrome. It's like watching paint dry on Mars, but rapier.
In this movie you get to see what life on Mars would look like, if humanity would continue our current way of life: a planet for Earth's refugees, unable to sustain itself, slowly stripped of hope, abandoned and alone. Everyone on Red planet is looking for a Blue dot in the sky, and everyone there are looking away from the skies, into their own problems, their own crisis. To tell you the truth, Settlers is less of a science fiction action movie, and more of a story about an abandoned child, who in her heart is holding fire for independence and love, but struggles to grow in a this hostile environment that she must call home, but is actually more like a prison, that sometimes unloving family can feel like. It's more like Hitchcock's The Rope, but the subject is aimed at human spirit, not rationality.
I thought this was absolutely fantastic. One of my favorite movies this year, and movie-watching is mostly all I do.
Hot garbage. Hot, dry, disgusting garbage. Not even science fiction. How do I know? Put it in a remote desert on earth and nothing changes. Just a horrible, claustrophobic story of horrible things happening to unlikeable people in the middle of nowhere. Nothing remotely Martian about it. The tunnel thing was just a big metal metaphor. No point, no story. Just struggle ‘n' death.
Was ok, probably one of the better mars inhabitant films I've seen which isn't saying much. More of a slow building moody drama than sci fi flick. What let it down for me was what her robot box / pet does. Just seemed pretty implausible. Also the robot box just seemed to be more a dog just to satisfy the girl's desire for a pet, than a functional robot. Unless of course it was designed to be that way by the manufacturers. Overall film is worth a watch.
Nothing like Mars here, the slow, long-winding pace just makes me sleepy. Never settle with the settlers
It started out interesting then quickly got boring. Oh and they kill a pig. And then it was slow, slow, slow, it was such a waste of time and budget.
I loved it. I don't understand how so many people hated it but who cares. To me, this is one of the best films of 2021. Minimalistic, smart, melancholic and suspenseful. Two thumbs up.
A slow-burn, unforgiving sci fi western. It fizzles out towards the end, mainly because the reproductive drive of Jerry that ultimately proves fatal is not very well established. I do commend, however, the attempt at pushing serious themes like revenge, abuse and colonialism all within an extreme scenario that seems to push all characters towards the inhumane. It is doomed to be less than appreciated by moviegoers accustomed to epic finales, closed endings and manichean characters.
If you took the set, actors, budget, and just started over with a completely different story, you could make a great movie. This movie is terrible. I love low-budget, "cerebral" sci-fi. It's low-budget at least.
