Seven Reviews
Pitt, then struggling to prove himself as a serious performer (see Legends of the Fall), was given an injection of gritty credibility, delivering the unforgettable climactic line...

As horrific as the conclusion is, it’s also the final catalyst that shocks Somerset out of his own downturn toward defeatism and back toward a fight, however daunting, for humanity.

When Seven, with its velvety world of bottomless evil, taps you on the shoulder, your instinct will be to dive under the theater seat.

I wouldn't go so far as to call David Fincher's Seven the most terrifying film ever, but it's right up there on the top shelf with Psycho and The Silence of the Lambs.
| Original Score: 4.5/5 | Mar 29, 2024
The results of the killings are needlessly grotesque and don't really serve the smart screenplay by Andrew Kevin Walker and the artful direction of David Fincher. All of this talent is worth seeing if you can look past the gruesome details.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Mar 29, 2024
Seven, a dark, grisly, horrifying and intelligent thriller, may be too disturbing for many people, I imagine, although if you can bear to watch it, you will see filmmaking of a high order.

Fincher's one previous film, Alien 3, shared the same dingy colours and downbeat mood. But where that film stumbled over its tedious plot, Seven almost dances with vitality.

Seven is gripping and intricate in a sordid way, and Freeman and Pitt, physical and spiritual opposites, become an oddly satisfying pair, but I was happy when the movie had played its last trick on me and could hold me no longer.

Each actor reaches deep and brings forth a character far greater than the one written; for all its disappointments, the film can pierce the heart. As for Fincher, he pierces the heart with genius.

A director who seems to feel undisguised Envy for The Silence of the Lambs, but will end up inspiring Wrath through overblown Pride in his own intrusive touch.

The film belongs to Freeman and his quiet, carefully detailed portrayal of the jaded older man who learns not to give up the fight.

Director David Fincher made Alien 3. He has brought his extraterrestrial nightmares down to earth with a bump in the night of the soul. Not since seeing George Sluizer's The Vanishing have I been so rattled.

Spacey gives a truly chilling performance, madness under glass, and without it Seven would be nothing.

Suffers from that other deadly sin of self-consciousness. But it is, like Silence of the Lambs, a genuine original which, if it leaves a brackish taste in your mouth, nevertheless keeps you on the edge of your seat.

It's scary. It's creepy. And there are times when you will gasp aloud. It's depressing. And the crime scenes are so dimly lit that one can't help but wonder why the smart cops don't turn on the lights. But it works. And it works wonderfully well.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Mar 29, 2024
[Screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker's] two detective heroes are so much more richly conceived than the usual veteran/rookie cutouts that Morgan Freeman and Pitt feed on the roles like tigers.

It's not easy to make a great film when you're working with a tacky serial killer script, but David Fincher comes close. And if Seven isn't a great film, it is great filmmaking.

David Fincher, who directed, is the guy who killed off the Alien series with his feature-film debut, the unfathomable Alien 3 in 1992. If nothing else, Seven proves that Fincher has talent.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Mar 28, 2024
The film creates the same morbid fascination with the depths of human horror that propelled The Silence of the Lambs to popularity. But Seven doesn't have the driving momentum of that superior thriller.

It uses surprise so effectively that I should say be warned, by which I mean not only that you might prefer to see the film before you read this review, but also -- are you sure you want to go into that dark room?
