Shadowlands Reviews

It's a must see, absolutely perfect ! I've felt attached to every single actor in this movie, I couldn't tell if they were acting or if I was watching a real normal life going by behind my screen. It's emotion-packed, I adore it !

Wonderful movie, emotionally challenging at times but it gives you perspective and hope.

Beautiful movie. So deeply moving. Anthony Hopkins is such a powerful actor, he is so skilled in playing the part of such deep thinking and torn character in the throws of a loss of a most cherished love of his life. No doubt the hardest of emotions for us to ever have to deal with.

I prefer this slightly over The Remains of the Day which is very simliar in tone and setting to this and I feel serves as a great comparison piece. Compared to that one hopkins performance is allowed to show more emotion and when he does it's so powerful. He perfectly balances being restrained but maximizing the emotion perfectly. Debra Winger is amazing in this. Filled with charm, wit, clever zingers, and serving as the relatable anhor in the story in this world of posh academics. All the performances are excellent. Attenbourghs direction is masterful in this with gorgous cinematography, masterful framing and camerawork, and a very memorable setting. The themes explored here are very mature and pwerful along the lines of a movie like Ordinary People. It's a combination of a drama character study and romance and masterfully weaves them together. It doesn't offer easy solutions or summations to the themes explored either but just a really human understanding. This does a great job humanizing Hopkins character a quite a bit more than Remains of the Day for me. It's sad, heartwarming, and very insightful. My only real complaints is the editing is very good but it can be a bit clunky at first setting the story up and introducing Hopkins at first. Same with setting up the romance as well. But exploring it is masterful and the chemistry between the two is amazing and more than makes up for that. The music is really well done but it isn't used that much and not super memorable on its own. It's a slow burn the entire way but riveting to watch as it unfolds. Everyone should give this a try once.

Author William Nicholson & Richard Attenborough have given the viewer a unique & touching film regarding the unusual, poignant, & absorbing relationship between C.S. Lewis & Joy Gresham which occurred in the autumn (Lewis‘ significant re-awakening season, apparently!) of the writer‘s life. I cannot imagine better casting than Hopkins & Winger in these two roles. They convey a multitude of the varied personal characteristics within these two characters in addition to adding, I suspect, some of themselves as well. That last remark is only based on the little I have noticed about their off screen personalities & remains pure supposition on my part. What Hopkins & Winter have accomplished in their characterizations is to bring to life two immensely interesting human beings that I, anyway, grew quite attached to in the course the film. Having not seen Attenborough's GANDHI prevents me from making any comparisons between it & SHADOWLANDS but the latter is certainly a quality work & perhaps the most moving love story film of the 1990s.

It's a great movie. Still not streaming, this site says it's on Apple 온라인카지노추천, but that's an earlier version from the 80s.

The greatest movie I have ever watched when it comes to the subject of love and faith. This is true faith of astounding power and true love astonishingly portrayed by both lead roles: Jack and Joy. They captured my heart, these two people trying to find hope in each other and happiness. Perfect acting by Anthony Hopkins and Debra Winger. It has great comedy. The writing is extraordinary. The directing is magnificent. The music is wonderful. A masterpiece of the drama genre.

"Shadowlands" is the unlikely love story of writer and lecturer C.S. Lewis ( Anthony Hopkins ) and American poet Joy Gresham ( Debra Winger ). Late in life, Lewis ( known to his friends as Jack) finds his one and only love after meeting a fan of his Chronicles of Narnia books. Joy and Jack's initial meeting is awkward but developed into a long distance friendship. Jack and his brother, with who he lives, invite Joy and her son to stay with them for Christmas after learning of their arrival in London. During this stay Jack learns of her husbands alcoholism and abuse.  When Joy's marriage finally breaks down, she and her son move permanently from the U.S.A to London in the hope of getting a publishing deal and to begin a new life. Joy and Jack regularly meet up and thus begins a much closer relationship but still only based on friendship and support. Once Joy's divorce is finalised Jack secretly marries her to allow Joy to benefit from British Citizenship. Unfortunately this clinical, genteel approach of C.SL Lewis , due in part to his upbringing and religious faith is shattered by horrific news. What develops is an intense and intimate relationship, way out of Jack's comfort zone, as he realises both he and Joy have fallen in love. Anthony Hopkins is magnificent in the role of C.S.Lewis delivering a versatile and extremely moving performance. This is particularly evident during the final scenes of this true love story which is based on actual events.

I found this a very thought provoking film. The fact its based on a true story made me all the more interested to see what happened. It is quite philosophical, with Lewis questioning things in a way that made it seem as if he was vocalising his inner voice, speaking aloud things that others maybe wonder but don't admit to. Its of course partly about his attitudes and concerns in relation to religion and faith, which I found interesting - given the plot (I won't elaborate further so as not to provide spoilers), there are inevitable challenges. Its by no means a fast paced or action packed type of a film but I found it a very interesting watch, from a moral angle and also in terms of the dialogue. There are some very interesting quotes present in this film, which include (all 3 spoken by Anthony Hopkins, as Jack (C.S.) Lewis):- 'I consider friendship to be one of lifes most treasured gifts' , 'Pain is God's megaphone to rouse a deaf world. ', 'we read to know we're not alone' and 'men have intellect; women have soul' - which, of course, Joy wasn't entirely pleased with. I thought this was a really touching film, one I'd happily recommend.

This is the greatest love story I have ever seen on screen. Anthony Hopkins should have won best actor. Debra Winger also should have received best actress. Their chemistry is truly captivating. This is my favorite movie of all time, I would watch this movie before Return of the Jedi, The Return of the King, Jurassic Park, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Its the most beautiful movie I have seen and the comedy is amazing. The story is about love enduring to the end. Everyone should watch this.

The greatest drama of all time.

Another lost flixster rating. I remember it to have been informative about Lewis and his writings.

I love that movie. It‘s so perfect, I‘ve seen it a dozen times.

Some great scenes of Oxford.

Superb movie, the only false note is a badly miscast Debra Winger.

This is the 2nd time I've seen this film after only seeing the latter part of the film before. I must say it has improved with the 2nd viewing - especially the acting of Hopkins and Winger. The period settings and dialogue are near perfect: it seems so natural and real. A lot of their lives was omitted as of necessity given the 2hr running time. It is a tear jerker but an uplifting one all the same. I think quite a few liberties have been taken with the facts (e.g. the composite Inkling character) and that is why I'm not giving it the full 5 stars - print the legend I suppose.

I've seen this touching movie about 8 times; an amazing better movie about life itself, in which Hopkins is doing a brilliant job, but ... Winger is doing even better. An absolutely must see if you like serious conversations and won't miss action too quick.

I found it too melodramatic.

Between 3 and 3.5 stars. Tenderness and sensivity.

When I first watched Shadow Lands, it was years ago. I was much younger and now realize that I didn't fully understand the film I had just seen. I am 35 now, I have lived more, seen more and felt more as I have gotten older and as I finish watching this movie for the second time, I am so utterly moved I am nearly at a loss for what to say. To start, all the traditional aspects are spot on, script, plot, acting, casting, editing, all remarkable. Truly every production element of the film is flawless. Thats not the impressive part though. What moves me is that which is at the heart of the film. The essence of it. It touches on something that very few movies are able to do. It touches on loss. On truly heart rendering loss and love. The bitter sweet duality in which we all live. Knowing that we need both of them, for anything to exist at all. It so elegantly skirts along those lines. Without saying too much or too little. A glimpse and glimmer of the struggle we all feel when we lose that which is dear to our hearts. Most of us, myself included, struggle to describe what this film has so very poignantly shown. I am truly thankful for having watched it. Right now, someone in the world, somewhere out there, needs to watch Shadowlands. But in truth we all could and should see it. It is a gift.
