Sharper Reviews

Apr 20, 2025

Decent enough movie.

The movie was laid out perfectly. The characters were perfectly fleshed out until the last ten minutes. They then turned into cardboard cut outs and tanked the rest. I'm being harsh but this was written 10 minutes after watching it. It ended so unrealistically they should be put into screenwriter jail.

I'm a fan of the "plan within the plan within the plan within the plan" type of plot. You add Sebastian Stan (dancing) and I'm a big fan.

Good but just too many layers

OK++ the first 20 minutes - at 27 minutes it was an easy stop and never to return. Might work well on a twelve year old, but made me feel stupid. Great cast or not, this is a waste of time.

**Sharper** gets a solid 3 stars from me. The only reason I hit play was the insanely talented cast—Julianne Moore, Sebastian Stan, and Justice Smith all deliver great performances. My expectations were low going in because of the mixed reviews, but I was pleasantly surprised by the plot. It’s clever, full of twists and turns, and keeps you guessing who’s playing who. If you’re into crime dramas with lots of surprises, it’s definitely worth checking out. That said, it didn’t fully click for me. The pacing is just way too slow, which made it hard to stay invested. The movie builds tension well, but it drags in spots, and I found myself checking the time a few too many times. It’s definitely smartly written, but I didn’t *love* it. If you’re patient and love twisty stories, give it a shot—just don’t expect it to blow you away.

Michael D audience review from 7.8.2024 is very accurate on this movie. Mary S audience review from 4.21.2024 short but sums it up well. Def worth a watch. But know that your not sitting to watch an award winning film here. However, solid entertainment for sure.

A little slow at times, but decent acting and a fairly interesting plot. Recommend checking it out.

Showed too much too soon and too often and then proceeds to tell the story in blocks that do not.

there is no element of surprise and what disturbs this film is the initial plot which already spoiler and knows what they are trying to do at the end.

Classic con artist film. The writers did a fantastic job with character building and connecting them all together. It has a lot of twists that catch you off guard. The acting was convincing. I felt cinematography needed some work. It could have benefited from some violence or malice. Good watch.

The plot is fantastic, the performances range from good to superb, the direction is Good. I really enjoyed it. The script though good needs some tightening up in places, but the screenplay is where this movie really lets down the production. The plot is quite an intricate tale of intrigue, romance, deception, misdirection and drama. To do this well is difficult, and to do it convincingly requires a very tight screenplay with details of logic, procedure, and continuity dealt with exceptionally. Though there are not so much 'holes' in the plot, it creaks and groans at the seams here and there where the bonds of the story are not quite so tight. Very strong performances all around though. Sebastian Stan who plays Max is good but not quite up to the requirements of this role. He is given an awful lot to do in this production, with a range of demands on his capabilities that slightly outweighs his deliverable repertoire. He handles some aspects excellently while others not quite well. Given the script has some limitations in areas of his involvement, it is difficult to say if this is due entirely to his shortcomings, but certainly these are areas of weakness the movie displays. Julianne Moore gives a good performance, but still doesn't seem quite as engaged as she's really needs to be to bring off this one with the engrossment needed for a stellar accolade. Particularly as her role really does place great demands on the delivery for her character. Brianna Middleton - Sandra, Justice Smith - Tom, John Lithgow - Richard Hobbes are fantastic, and the minor cast also do valid service to the requirements of the roles they hold. You may find parts of the film dragging as I did, and irrespective of how much I was enjoying the movie, this is an aspect that really shouldn't be present in a film of this caliber... that is, given it is offering so much. The failings should have been dealt with and eradicated long before production as without doubt, minor changes in this one could have made it Oscar worthy. The length is about right for a film of this genre, and I was pretty much immersed, from beginning to end (aside from the issues I've already highlighted). Definitely recommended viewing.

Solid performances all around. The ending felt a bit implausible, but satisfying enough that I didn’t mind.

Great cast… the storyline has potential…. But it's a total waste of time… you can see the ending from a mile away.

Great story telling while climbing up the chain of con artists. Great visuals that fits well with each moment that captures the emotional dilemmas of each character. Equally good camera work capturing each character's and situation's nature. Excellent audio and video effects. Background music is refreshing. Unique dialogues that awakens consciousness of audience to stay focused on the story. Plot is certainly thrilling yet the final act by the aggrieved party didn't do much justice to the story up to that point. However the conclusion is satisfactory and anticipated yet presented in the most twisted and unexpected way. That's what make Sharper a must watch.

To be fair, this is not my type of movie. I thought this might be a heist film or something similar, but it is very much a drama, I guess maybe you could call it a mystery/thriller, but it felt like a slog. I'm sorry, but it felt quite melodramatic (Stan is so over-the-top it was tough for me to watch) that if I'm John Lithgow, I'm wondering if I've been cast in a two-hour episode of Days of Our Lives. Sure, there were unexpected turns, but I think a lot of it was telegraphed, even if you weren't looking to spoil the movie yourself; no reveals were really earth-shattering.

Entretenida, una película que te va llevando por adonde quiere a medida que avanza sin decepcionar. Tal vez en un película llena de giros el del climax no sea el mejor pero eso no hace que en general sea muy buena.
