She's Having a Baby Reviews
This is probably the least successful of the John Hughes product that came out through the 80s, which is somewhat surprising as it would seem in theory to have the most potential. It would seem that Hughes' ability to write interesting, three dimensional teenage characters stopped once they turned into adults. There is nothing fresh or original here, nothing you couldn't find in an average sitcom. Bacon does well with the material, but McGovern feels lost and unable to rise to the occasion of creating a character with any interest whatsoever. And considering the title of the movie, there is precious little dedicated to the baby - it almost seems like an afterthought. A dramatic 180 degree shift in tone at the climax of the movie feels unearned and maudlin, even though it's the only time anything close to true emotion happens. These are likable and talented actors, including Baldwin in one of his very first film roles, but they can't breathe life into characters that are more caricature than human.
A great "becoming an adult" movie. One of John Hugh's hidden classics. This movie does not get the credit it deserves.
I really enjoyed this movie. It may not be quite the same as the other John Hughes movies... but I really enjoyed it. I felt the actors had great chemistry and there were some wonderful performances. Some of the jokes and 'daydream' sequences were maybe a little disjointed from the rest of the movie (the lawnmower dance sequence) but they still were fun and I did get some good laughs from them. I liked that the movie took its time to build the characters and help us get to know them. This is a gem of a film. Sit back and just go along for the journey.. really special film.
Cute little John Hughes movie about growing up. Not one of his best or more well-known, but it still has good humor and sweet moments. I've never gotten married or expected a child, but the emotions and anxieties seem very realistic. This plays as sort of a sequel to his teenage movies, showing the life that comes after the credits roll.
Fun to watch, and there are plenty of good actors. Plus, it says true and good things about what people think and feel when they get married etc, lot to think about for everybody
I know this review won't be popular but this is literally my favorite movie of all time and I've seen hundreds and hundreds of movies from all decades. This movie shines because it has everything you want in an 80s John Hughes movie including a great soundtrack. I love the chemistry between all of the actors and I love how serious it gets at the end especially with Kate Bush's "this woman's work" which makes me cry every time…
It's basically just an hour and 45 minutes of Kevin Bacon having a hard time growing up and dealing with a fear of commitment. It's a decent dramedy, but nothing all that noteworthy.
I loved all the fantasy scenes of boring middle class lifelessness. This movie felt kind of undercooked or incomplete but it has some great ideas, acting, and scenes in it.
I didn't end up pulling for anyone involved.
Deals with a man's confusing and reluctant entrance into adulthood and responsibility. Sometimes quirky, sometimes poignant, yet it would have benefited from less cliches and more character development.
I love this movie....i think its underrated...i like that its from his perspective bcuz i think men are just like this...going through everyday, not sure, waiting for those moments that confirm all that is right in the world. Sweet story, too nad for all the inappropriate language
Despite the mixed reviews, I decided to check this film out in my quest to watch all of John Hughes movies. The story had legs and chronicled the build-up from marriage to suburban life to pregnancy to birth very well. The movie cut out a big opportunity to show Jake walking up to the aisle in dread and fear for the big changes coming to his life before he got married. The Flashback Scenes were annoying and a few of them added nothing to the story and were a hollow attempt at humour. Nonetheless I enjoyed watching the movie but it wasn't his best work.
A newlywed husband struggles with being a husband and the reality of a lifestyle change a baby will bring. Filled with many familiar faces from Hughes' previous film. Subpar for him.
In terms of a John Hughes film this is not one of his better films. There are some nicely played, well thought out moments though.
Probably John Hughes's best film. So many great roles--Alec Baldwin, pre Downton Abbey Elizabeth McGovern, and the indomitable Kevin Bacon. Great scene with Bacon imagining his in laws coaching him on how to impregnate McGovern, whilst sporting miner's hats.
