Sideways Reviews
Why the heck should the wonderful Christine marry such an asshole? The delightful Maya accept an unattractive alcoholic, and the gorgeous Sandra have a fling with Jack as well?!!? Miles' mother fixed a nice meal for them, only to have her savings stolen 😪 Nasty, disgusting, and unacceptable 😵💫
Perfect pair up of Payne and Giamatti, dark humor at its finest. Wonderful performance by Giamatti.
An all time favorite movie with an excellent screenplay and cast. The direction is well paced and just when the big plot line of the romantic fling between Haden Church and Oh is resolved and you are expecting the pieces will fall where they may as most movies do, Payne delivers an absolutely hilarious scene starting in a restaurant; Haden Church saying he had to run through an ostrich farm and he and Giamatti have to sneak into a house. This movie is a treasure.
Probably my favorite movie ever
Paul Giamatti and Thomas Haden Church are BRILLIANT! Without a doubt one of the best comedies of all time. Giamatti expertly plays the role of an all too self-aware middle-aged man in melancholic decline that is being reluctantly pulled into another middle-aged man's feeble and desperate attempts at relevancy and external validation through paper-thin love affairs. The tension between both men's competing versions of faded dreams settles on the truth of it all: in whatever direction our egos need adjustment, there is beauty in accepting the truth of our mundane struggle, and often enough to squeak out sufficient meaning and happiness to soldier on.
An amazingly underappreciated comedy drama that just hits you so hard in all the right spots with its strong characters and themes about approaching life in the same way you decide how long to wait to open your bottle of wine. Miles and Jack are such strong characters with infectious chemistry and a really believable friendship. They're complete opposites, yet they're drawn to each other for the qualities they lack. Their strengths and weaknesses perfectly compliment each other. Jack is wild & reckless, but adventurous and helps Miles out of his shell to take chances he would otherwise miss out on. Miles is paralyzed with neuroticism & self doubt, but he's still very insightful and his common sense helps keep Jack's impulses in check and out of trouble. The movie just feels like one lovely relaxing vacation into the orchard countryside that you never want to leave. And neither do the characters. Jack just wants to escape reality and the upcoming big life changes & commitment that are approaching him with his marriage. He thinks he can just change it all with one last adventurous fling. But the second the beans are slipped, reality rears its ugly face again and he's forced to own up. He lost his chance that he never really deserved or even really had to begin with. And that makes him truly appreciate the life he should've never taken for granted. That sometimes enough really is just enough. Miles on the other hand, has to really wind up the courage to earn back the one woman who truly understands and loves him back. That gives his life meaning even when his writing aspirations are failing to do the same. To take risks and truly open your true self to someone you love, even if they won't take you back. It isn’t easy, but with enough honesty and soul searching, Miles finally finds his happiness and a second chance at love. All while playing a crucial role in helping his friend Jack lick his wounds and snapping some sense into him. It's a very funny and true-to-life movie that dives deep into the wonders of wine and human connection, topped off by great acting, witty comedy, and a warm smooth jazz soundtrack that sounds like how a fine bottle of wine tastes.
One of the all time greats. An incredible piece of cinema.
Twenty years on and still great!
I watched this because my uncle recommended. Surprised I hadn't seen, being it's 20 years old. I really enjoyed it. I related fully to Miles. Jack, not so much. But I liked Trying to understand him. Movie was funny in a couple places, but I definitely consider it more drama. Good acting, characters, & story.
Another great film from Alexander Payne. Sideways is a delightful watch, it's very well written, it balances comedy and drama quite nicely, and Paul Giamatti does a great job.
Like a chic flick, but with guys. Relaxing and fun watch.
Sideways is an enthralling, superbly written, and wonderfully produced movie, with an Oscar worthy performance from Paul Giamatti, and a great supporting cast, revolving around wine, along the northern California country, and a storyline that captivates you, definitely one of the best must see.
Its a really good movie.
This movie has become a very interesting movie that has attracted the attention of the audience. The angle the director was able to see is amazing. The roles of the actors in the film were very special. I liked this movie very much.
Boring and overatet as hell
I saw this movie years ago found it can be depressing. I am watching it again and like a fine wine it has aged well with time. I am so impressed with the subtleties this movie is great.
This movie is excellent! If you are looking for a side-splitting comedy this is not the movie for you. Dramedy would be the best genre to place it. It is definitely a drama with some comedic breaks, I thought the writing was excellent and the acting was great as well.
Aside from Giamatti's fine performance, this movie I found to be rather boring and pretentious at times.
Sideways really runs on the chemistry between Giamatti and Hayden-Church. It feels like the two have known each other for a long time, and even though their lives are moving in different directions they care deeply for one another. Both are equally flawed in such different ways that it makes for a lot of fun moments along with a lot of pathos. The ending feels very honest and earned.
